As a new tesla MY owner who has had an information overload with all of the info I am viewing researching etc.....this has been by far one of the most helpful tips. I contemplated getting an SSD but I immediately purchased my microSD card and adapter for piece of mind. Thanks for the tip.

Pros for SSD: - SSDs have faster read and write speed - More convenient (don't require adapter or anything extra. You can easily plug into your phone and review it. It will get annoying to remove the MicroSD card and then insert in correct adapter and then insert in computer and then take forever to transfer the file) Pros for MicroSD: - Smaller (People who break into your car will have harder time finding it) - Better operating temperature [-25C (-13F) - 85C (185F) compared to 0C (32F) - 60C (140F)] Note* There is almost no way your car will ever get to 140F. So basically here are your options, go with SSD if you want faster read/write speed and more convenience, get MicroSD card if you want small form factor (more hidden).

The only good thing about SD is the temp range, It will break much faster because of the cycles, Many of the NAND chips in a SSD might already be in Tesla main computer.

You're right. I got my MYP nov 2021. Immediately thought I was the boss upgrading to 500GB sandisk SSD. It burned in 3 months. Then I got samsung T7 SSD. Worked fine for 3 months and lately it stops recording after a day or two. Now I'm looking at and miscrosd card option. I also have dashcams on 3 other ICE cars. They stay out in VEgas heat, all with 125gb microsd card. Been using them for 2 years so far and no issues of them going bad. Thanks for the vid

A typical SSD can write over its capacity 50k times before degrading, with cheap ones being closer to 5k and some going as good as 100k. Even at 5k though, realistically you're going to fill 500GB or less per month, so a 256GB drive will take 2500 months to fill up 5000 times...or 200 years.
@senorpardo2 жыл бұрын
Over a year later but I dislike how this misleading comment is at the top of the comment list. Luckily there is literally a metric for this that all SSD manufacturers use to rate their drives. It's called TBW (total bytes written). As the name implies, this is the amount of data the drive is rated for before it becomes likely to fail. This is also the point where most warranties are voided. As an example, Samsung external 1tb T7 drive that a lot of Tesla people point to for dashcam use only has a TBW of 360TB. Or 360 times it's storage space. A couple orders of magnitude smaller than your claim. By contrast, the far cheaper max endurance 256GB SanDisk microsd card can write over 1500TB of data in it's life, or 6000 times its total storage. The Tesla Cam only loop records 10 minutes of video and will never use the available storage on the drive, however, it is still writing data to the drive all the time, so buying something specifically designed for dash cams is prudent. That being said, unless you use sentry all the time and want to store 5 years of sentry mode events, you will literally never use all the space on a large SSD.

Because Tesla - The Chinese TAPTES product is simply a copy in concept and design of the small US company JEDA. Just the electronics in the TAPTES does almost not exist. There is no regulated power control built in. So there is a danger to damage the Model 3 USB ports.

I purchased my 2019 model 3 used. It came with a Samsung 512gb T5 SSD. Also had the hub and wireless charger. The SSD fit well behind magnet door. I begin to notice sentry cam footage took 45 seconds to load with the SSD full of data. So I purchased a Samsung Bar USB(14.99 128gb) Tesla is selling the same thing rebranded for $40. No adapters, no hubs. That hub has to split the power of those 1.4a 7w usb ports. Making them even more under powered. I'm installing a 12v plug into that compartment for the wireless charger. Should get 15w per side to the wireless charger. And leave the right side USB A for sentrycam.

The only footage that saved was only 1 second and glitchy (kept replaying the door opening and closing).Tesla mobile service came and claimed they fixed the issue but still didn't work. If you need extra data ports and don't want to spend the extra $50 on a Jedda, there's mini hubs for $12 that can give you 4 data ports out of 1. They will all need to share data throughput of course, but if you only need 1 or less data drive and use the rest for signal devices like controllers, it'll be more than enough bandwidth and leave you with more ports for half the money. You can also store a hub elsewhere if it's just for infrequent use, which may be free to you if you already have one lying around. Having said all that, the Jedda still seems better, but you can easily get by for half the price if you're not comfortable spending $80 on a fancy USB hub.

@BecauseTesla2 жыл бұрын
I'm still using the same Rocketek and endurance card, and it's running strong! The case of the Rocketek is metal, so it does get hot, but this is not a concern. All drives get hot when constantly recording, but the metal cases feel hotter because they're metal. It's like a giant heat sink that has the heat on the outside of the port. The endurance card inside is built for extreme temperatures, and I wouldn't trust any other type of card for this application. I've had other drives and had problems with them all. No problems at all with this current setup from 2020.

Great video, but where do get your information regarding SSDs from? SSD’s typically handles 160F (70C) without any problems. Do look at TBW when purchasing. A cheap one with only 150 TBW means writing 40GB every day for 10 years. That should be more than enough for Sentry. I do agree that smaller sticks like that are better when it comes to space, but they will burn out earlier than an SSD. Pro Endurance though would match a typical SSD, so that’s a great tip.

You only need one drive. I’ve never been in a 2021 Model S, so you can help me verify. Did you find a Tesla USB drive in the glovebox? If so, remove it. is it USB A or C? If the port in the glovebox is USB A, you can use the card reader like mine. If you only have USB C in the entire car (including the glovebox) then you will either need a USB C card reader, or a USB A -> USB C adapter to use the reader like mine. Let’s first verify which type of port you have in the glovebox and I can update my video with the correct reader or adapter for your car.

If you're the type of person that is a power user on your phone...always running the battery down low, then don't go with the wireless charger...it will take longer to recharge the phone's battery. Mine does get hot, but all of them that I've tried have been hot. The good thing about the "endurance" card that I use is that it handles extreme temperatures (both hot and cold).

does it just keep saving files to the storage device until it is full and then starts overwriting or does it just store them for a set number of days? is it possible to permanently save a clip on the card or do you need to transfer it to your computer / another storage device?
@BecauseTesla4 жыл бұрын
You are correct. It fills up the storage device before writing over the oldest files. I know that you can permanently save Dashcam footage by pressing the dashcam icon while driving the car. It creates a saved folder on the device for only those videos that you pressed the button to save. I'm not sure if you can do that with Sentry Mode footage. Anyone care to chime in on that one? Regardless, if you have something that you want to save, it would be wise to back it up on a computer anyways.

The Rocketek micro ssd adapter has bad reviews for overheating.
@BecauseTesla2 жыл бұрын
I have some strong thoughts about this. 1) any brand of adapter that is used for non-stop recording (like sentrymode/dashcam) is going to get very hot. Even my Samsung T7 SSD that I use for playing MP3 music gets hot. I'm afraid many online reviewers are not aware of this. 2) If they are experiencing a failure, it may be due to using a normal microSD card. The _Endurance_ card that I recommend using is designed specifically for extreme temperatures (both very hot and very cold), which is perfect for the inside of a car. 3) I can only give you my personal experience. I have used other brands that have failed, and the Rocketek adapter is the only one that I've used that has NEVER failed. I've had it installed for about a year and a half now...NO failures. It does get warm to the touch, but nothing crazy. I hope this helps answer any questions about overheating concerns.

move over jeda, bassenor has a better hub has 2 hidden ports and a 50/50 disbursement of ports example the cars left port power 1 left port and rest of the jeda ports are controlled by the cars weaker second port...... in bassenor hub left car port powers the usb a and usb c front port and the left hidden port and the cars right port controles all 3 ports on the right! for 30 dollars and better features its my first pick

No, format it once in the car and it should stay formatted. My car is a 2019 LRAWD and haven’t had any issues since moving the Samsung card to the Rocketek adapter. Which adapter are you using?

@@rdiaz206 That's interesting. I don't have a 2020 Model Y to test this with, but this is the first problem that I've heard like this. I also have a Samsung T7, but with 2TB. It's a great drive, but I keep mine indoors attached to a desktop. If that's the only thing working for you, use it. It's just a shame because the endurance card is smaller, cheaper, and handles extreme temperatures the best. For some reason, your car doesn't like that one. I have a feeling it's not the endurance car itself...more than likely the adapter is at fault. Do you have another brand to test with?

@BecauseTesla3 жыл бұрын
Yes, in fact, new Teslas are shipping with a 64GB USB drive. The Tesla website will allow you to purchase a larger USB drive if you want more than 64GB...and the one they sell is 128GB.

lol worried about an ssd not working... you make it sound like the ssd will degrade over a month of use. the rest of your points are fine but that one was dumb the ssd can handle being written and rewritten for years. plus ssd isnt more expensive you can buy 1tb ssd for 100 your micro sd is 128 gb for 28 meaning its actually more expensive to buy yours. however either should work fine and there isnt a correct answer its preferrence tbh

My adapter also gets hot, but that's why it is important to use an "endurance" micro sd card instead of a normal one. The endurance model can handle high heat and also extreme cold.

The NAND flash in USB, SSD and the SDflash is virtually all the same. The settings for access each flash chip varies. A SSD uses more flash components and wear levels these endurance cycles over more flash chip. This guy doesn’t understand how these storage devices are designed and built.

What do you recommend for Teslas?
@woesch91044 жыл бұрын
👎 How can you support TAPTES product since they have stolen the idea and design of the USB Hub from the inventor JEDA. JEDAs electronics are proprietary and designed for safe usage in your Tesla. Many other USB hub options don’t offer regulated power delivery, meaning they can damage your Tesla’s front USB ports. 🙁
@BecauseTesla4 жыл бұрын
They did not steal Jedas electronics. The Jeda hub is superior in every way, but you do pay 3x the price for it. The Taptes is just a fancy splitter in a plastic housing that was inspired by the Jeda hub. The iPhone was the original smartphone, and then Android phones started showing up that did similar things and looked similar. Competition makes the market better (in my opinion).
@woesch91044 жыл бұрын
Because Tesla - The Chinese TAPTES product is simply a copy in concept and design of the small US company JEDA. Just the electronics in the TAPTES does almost not exist. There is no regulated power control built in. So there is a danger to damage the Model 3 USB ports ports.

@wshryer Blackhawk TMS Hi there! Thanks for watching. On your screen's menu, you'll need to go to "Safety & Security", and scroll down to Dashcam. There is a grey button that says "Format USB Device". I would remove all drives from the car's USB ports except for the new endurance card. That way you know its only formatting that new card. Press the format button on the screen, and that's all it should take. I show the steps here in the video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIXJiJRnib-WrKc

@@esteamor101 I have not noticed any unusual issues with heat. The Rocketek, just like any other USB drive does get hot to the touch, but not hot enough to cause damage. I'll keep you guys posted if I run into any issues with it. The constant writing is what causes the heat, so it doesn't get hot when used on a home computer.
