Watched a couple of movies during the weekend, yes most of them atmos…I don’t listen to music, and I can tell you these 300 completely transform the system, I hear a lot more bass , a lot more presence on the rear end and the atmos effects just cranked up for the first time in my life and in on any system I’ve heard I can actually hear things above me….I agree 100% with Peter you can’t pinpoint where the speakers are, sounds are just all over my living room and most importantly sound is even now from the front and back it’s not like other systems that you feel like the soundbar is pulling all the weight…this is just incredible and I couldn’t be happier ! Can’t wait for more tests from Peter to see you placement, I also always looked at adding another sub and I don’t feel like I need one anymore

Great video as always Peter!! I couldn't agree more regarding the front facing driver on the Era 300. I think it's a new "era" in listening and we just need to change the idea of how this works. I initially had the same feeling as lot of people here... that without the front firing speakers I was missing something, it was lacking... but that's because that's how I've been listening to movies and music for the last 20 years. Point sources in stereo or surrounds and VERY direct. However the more I listen to them in the surround setup (Arc + Sub G3) the more I am blowing away by how immersive the whole system is. I haven't had as much enjoyment as I've had in the last 24 hours whether that's watching films or listening to atmos music... And in fact when you listen to a well mixed atmos music track for me it's a complete game changer.... Sonos have done a great job with this speaker!!!

Wow awesome! I updated to 15.2 without realising the power to my one sl's power cables weren't connected. They weren't connecting to the arc thereafter. Thankfully a reboot of the arc, sub and one sl's triggered the update again for the rears. And yes, definitely quality over quantity. Absolutely love Atmos over Apple music now via Sonos!

I'm surprised you're having this experience with non-Atmos content, my experience has been rocky, feels like stereo and 5.1 movies/shows sound too quiet in the surrounds for me, and adding 300s seems to have made the center channel more quiet overall so it's hard to hear talking scenes unless kicking audio level way up, which then gets scary loud with an action scene.. do you mind sharing your in-app settings? What level do you have your sub and surrounds set to as well as EQ?

And if you take your treble up to nine while there's something like some dialogue playing and then lower it you will notice it gets covered up! A lot of people keep the treble down and I don't know why!? BTW I am a musician and have been playing and mixing music for over 20 years! Not saying I know it all but I do know you need that High end...

I think the argument of the missing driver in a surround setup is more for those where the 300s are not directly behind due to room size. Imagine they are further separated to the sides and you may need to angle them towards the listening position. In this case if Sonos offers a simple “how are your speakers configured” (directly behind or angled behind) they could change the outside firing driver to enable to center driver. This would still allow inside firing to help point sound behind while the center could push more to the sides. At least if it’s up against a side wall. I know Sonos says 8” minimum around speaker but if it’s mounted to the back corner of a room, that may not be doable. In any case I think another issue with the missing center is for those who use the speaker in surround configure for TV but when listening to music, they want the full sound the 300s are capable of, just to fill the room - not “balance the arc against the rear”. I want sound from all angles filling the room with a volume and fidelity the speaker is capable of performing. Just my 2 cents. I do appreciate you insights and reviews as always!

That's a good idea. Sonos could use that advice. If the Era300s are a considerable distance away, they can activate the center front driver! In fact, when you do trueplay, it can detect the distance already, and if it detects that it is like >8-9 feet away, it should activate the center driver!

If it’s for music while in surround config they should allow people to activate center driver or like he said if trueplay detects maybe greater than 10ft distance from the mlp. But tbh I think people just need something to be mad at bc first people were saying it was for music, and then that 5.1/7.1 content was unimpressive. Now people are saying “false advertisement” 😂😂 bc they bought it for 6drivers and are only getting 5. It’s crazy when the average consumer thinks they know the speaker design and functionality more than the testers, designers, engineers and programmers.

15.2 is a great update. My era 300 as home cinema rears sound AMAZING in movies and music! The sound fils the whole room. Even though they are installed inverted under the ceiling.

Btw true play set up worked perfectly on my Gen1 sub, Arc and now ear 300s (instead of the play:1s) as surround speakers … watching Apple TV+ latest movies with Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision is immersive. Same just listening to Apple Music, especially lossless spatial audio the Dolby Atmos is displayed in Somos s2 app.

A question if I may, you talk about the centre driver (Era 300) being disabled when suet up as a surround, is this true when that setup (Arc/Beam Gen2, x2 Era 300, Sub Gen3) is playing Atmos music from Apple Music? Thank you so much for your contribution! For the iPhone 6, there is a slight blocker there. Sonos S2 15.2 is only supported on iOS14 and above. And the iOS 14 version isn't supporting the iPhone 6. Only 6s and above. So that's unfortunate.

I was prompted to do the updates when I installed the era 300s …. added to my Arc and Mini Sub. …. No problems but making a stereo pair requires you to set each one in different rooms and then merge them. S2 app makes it easy, though. Watching Disney+ is SPECTACULAR I think the Arc and Mini have been optimized….this front setup sounds completely different in a good way ! I am listening “encased” in a giant bubble of sound. The 300s when set up as a stereo pair and as surrounds only two outer drivers on each are full volume the other two are very low and as surrounds the centre channel is also missing. As a single speaker in spatial audio you get all the drivers. Not if you use Apple TV 4K. When playing spatial music from ATV, all drivers (except the front one) are firing. Hopefully they update this

Hi Peter, Update - Finally got the floor stands for ERA300 today and to be honest the quality of the floor stand is exceptional and unboxing along with the simple installation was an additional joy!! Installed and replaced the surrounds (OneSL) from my home theatre setup and Wooowwwwww. What a difference!! Noticed one thing after trying Apple music using Airplay that the front channels on ERAs dont throw any sound, is this normal or is it because Of height level set to +8? Just curious. Thanks

Another great video Peter, thank-you. I too have added two Sonos 300’s to the Arc and sub system - it all sounds fantastic. I also use a gen 1 HomePod in the same room to control the whole Sonos system via Siri. It works ok with most Siri music requests. I’ll need to check if the Siri command will use the Sonos app to source the playing of the Apple Music song, or if it defaults to the Apple Music app - and thus maybe no Atmos output via Airplay. For music, I can’t wait for maybe a Sonos ERA 500 to replace the Five. It would also be great if Sonos did an over the air update to support Apple HomeKit.

@@PeterPee I understand about Airplay not having the bandwidth for Atmos, and I assume that includes Airplay 2? My point was more about how a Siri command engages a connection to Apple to stream. Music. For example: 1) (With NO HomePod involved) When using the Sonos app, Sonos engages directly with the Apple online music server, thus allowing for Atmos streaming. 2) When Sonos is added to HomeKit as a speaker group, I do this via the Arc group, Siri can be used to relay a command to play music via your Sonos system. (I.e. Hey Siri, play X in the Lounge room.) This works quite well. HOWEVER, I’m not yet sure which app engages the Apple Music server to stream the music. If it’s the Apple Music App, I would assume NO Atmos because it’s not supported over Airplay 2. However, if the Sonos app is engaged to stream the Atmos song, it would seem logical that the Atmos song would play. At present, I believe if you start a session using Siri to play a song on your Sonos system, you will NOT GET the Atmos quality. However, if you start the session via the Sonos app you will. I believe this diminishes the value of Airplay 2 with Sonos, and puts forth the argument for a better / HomeKit integration for Sonos. In my experience, once you go down the smart home route, and use a digital assistant via voice commands, you won’t go back.

Great review as always Pete! Definitely noticed the volume being louder since the update. And strongly agree that the volume on lower levels now even at 10 is a bit high and should be more balanced as I’m having to grab my remote more then ever to lower and louder the volume depending on the scene of the movie/ show. Also, I just got my 300’s delivered Thursday and my stands Friday. The stands I got are “Sanas” height adjustable! And I have to tell you even though the height adjustable stands were $100 more, it was definitely worth it. Love the look and the height I believe brings better effect/ atmos. So I highly recommend anyone looking to get stands, those are definitely the one’s to get. Far as the 300’s, coming from Gen 3 5’s, I believe it was worth it. Definitely hear a difference in the surrounds, especially the over head effects. Big difference in my opinion w/ the over head effects. Far as the music, it’s different loll Sounds like a live band and voices going all around. So I’m still up in there air like you as far as music what I prefer. But it’s nice to have. But I purchased the 300’s strictly for atmos/ surround so for that alone these are better then the 5’s. Keep up the great work Pete!

Got my era 300, between my paired play 5s. Kinda works well, they both have their strengths. The soundstage from the era 300 with atmos is amazing and wider than my play 5s - it sounds so airy and detailed. When I switch to the play 5s they have a lot more punch. I actually grouped them all but that just sounded meh.

I updated to 15.2 and now Spotify Connect/Airplay either doesn't work (can't see the speakers) or works but cuts out often when played from my iphone. Sonos app works fine, and I've made no changes to my network. I've got two Ikea bookshelf speakers in a stereo pair, anyone else having this issue? Spotify is updated to latest version, I have rebooted everything multiple times... issue persists for multiple days now.

Peter! I've seen lots of competing opinions on reddit and in comments regarding "positioning" for the Era 300s when used as surrounds. Properly "behind" vs "back/side" vs "side." Also, some people say "point them toward the TV wall directly," whereas others recommend "point the center of the speaker toward the listing position (more at 45 degrees). Would love to hear what you think as you experiment!

Right now, I have not had a lot of time to experiment with it. But at the moment, I have it at parallel against the rear wall, 3-4 inches away, when used as surrounds. My music listening, I have them angled inwards towards me at about 20-25 degrees.

Hi Peter. An observation from my side regarding latest update. Sonos Arc and Sub linked to AppleTV The volume via Apple TV is softer than when you play the same content via Sonos App. Top volume is probably 20% or even more louder including top volume. Can you confirm?

My 300s are about 9 feet away from my MLP and my couch, and even with true playing, I've had to turn up the surround sound to +8 (after reading reddit) and the audio is now completely enveloping! Do you think it could be because of my bigger living room space? (It's about 20x20) I've got the heights at +6, but tempted to see how it sounds at higher volumes too! I'm using Atmos movies in my testing.

Hi, I have Beam Gen 2, 2 Ikea bookshelf as surrounds, and Gen 2 Sub. The only thing missing is upward firing Atmos. Is it possible to add one 300 to system and place it in front to get the upward firing channels only. Or do I need to buy 2, very expensive 300s, and replace the Ikea bookshelf speakers as surrounds.

Personally for me it's a miss. On 15.2 using a home theater setup, when I switch between Full vs Ambient when playing Dolby Atmos music from Apple Music there is a difference in the sound of my surrounds using an Arc, Sub (Gen 2) and Play:1’s as rears. Have you been able to test this? Sonos says there should be no difference for Atmos music with the surrounds so this seems like an issue/bug. Ambient sounds like the right mix to me and is louder vs full which sounds off. Annoying for those that like to keep their surrounds on “Full”.

On a separate topic, I do agree with your conclusion on having the front driver disabled when using the Era 300’s as surrounds. One of my biggest issues with the Play:1’s as surrounds is that they are very close to my couch given the layout of my room and they sound too forward and right there. If I turn down the surround levels then the surrounds effect is lost for those sitting in a more normal central position. If the 300’s solve this issue and it sounds like they do that’s a good development. I hope Sonos doesn’t just give in to the Reddit outrage and enable them, or if they do they at least give an option to turn on/off depending on the surrounds placement/distance to the listening positioning. For those that sit close (and I agree with you that will be the majority of people) it will be better the way Sonos clearly tested and decided it should work. Now if I could only find the official Sonos stand in stock anywhere in the US I would potentially try the 300’s for myself…

I currently have a pair of Ones paired with a sub gen 3 which is very nice for stereo music listening but lacking in spacial music capability. Thinking of my next upgrade to achieve Dolby Atmos capability to allow me to experience the detailed soundstage from spacial music. For context, my usage is almost 100% listening to music. Got 2 x Era 300s, waited for the stands, stands arrived but one of the Eras screw threads were missing on the Era 300 itself (not the stands), now I have to wait again to return it and receive a new one. First time I've been let down by Sonos so I can forgive them this once.

Peter, have you found any problems watching Dolby truehd to the since the release of the 300’s? I can no longer get it to the Beam gen 2 not the 300’s after the update.

Thank you great video! I ask myself wether the ERA is the best "stand alone" speaker from Sonos for Dolby Atmos music. Our is the Arc superior (even in this scenario)? One the one hand the Arc is optimized for movies and not for music one the other hand the arc is bigger and has more speakers....

I have the Era 300 speaker I love it, but I loved sonos since my first purchase in about 2018. I disabled the system update. Do you think we will see a Era 500?

Thank you for the another great video. I am considering upgrading from Play:3 to Era 300 and use it with Arc and Sub Gen 3 in my living room, for both Atmos movies and largely stereo music (Spotify still does not have Atmos). Where should the Era 300 be positioned? Just behind the couch for best Atmos? Will you be doing a video about this? Currently I have the 2 Play:3 quite back the couch in the room corners, so that I optimise for movies on the couch and music in the room. But Era 300 might need different plcement

The Era 300s cover a much larger area and will be more forgiving even than the Play:3s. Actually more forgiving in terms of placement than any other Sonos surround setup that I have had!

Hi Peter, I just received my era 300 and am in the midst of setting it up. I am confused by what you said when you said Apple Music allowed us to play Dolby Atmos music directly. From what I tried, i can only play dolby atmos music from the sonos app. When I play the same song from the apple music app, there is no dolby atmos. Can you clarify?

I don’t know why the new era 300 main front speakers never play when in linked surround mode . I should be able to play my music not Dolby through the actual front speakers . Era 300 , I should be able to toggle the option not have the option taking away .

I would like to ask also to whom have the 2 ERA 300 as surround speaker...the fact that the central facing driver is disabled, when listenting to NON Atmos music is the sound worst than having for exemple 2 surround ERA 100 or Ones?I am still unsure if to add 2 ERA 300 or 100 to my Beam gen 2+ Mini sub sistem...I watch movies and listen to streamed music (non Atmos).Thanks

I haven’t listened to non-Atmos tracks on my Era 300 and I don’t know if I ever will! it’s too good!

I don't think the non-Atmos songs will do well on the Era 300s.

Also if I want to connect my Window PC to either Era 100 or Era 300, can connect directly using the USB-C port ? Or must use the converter and thru the 3.5 mm analogue cable to my PC?

I have an Arc + Sub + Era 300s setup. It sounds like the Sub audio is quite a bit weaker, similar to the issue we had with the 14.6 update. Have you noticed any difference with the latest update?

Quality = Sonos over Quantity = Everything else How did the Face to Face go at TC? shall have to wait for my 2 era 300. 15.2 is a sure winner and for sure a bit louder but thats what the volume on the app is for? Regards, An Aussie in Mauritius

Does the Arc/beam gen 2 and surrounds use their microphones to tune the soundstage in a continual/passive way such as the auto trueplay on the Move does? Or can I leave my microphones disabled on my soundbar and surrounds? Thanks!
