The best thing IMHO about the Forester is the visibility when compared to the others in this class.
@sergeantbigmac3 жыл бұрын
Agreed wholeheartedly. Visibility is a huge thing for me personally, these are built to be practical cars 1st and foremost and so being able to SEE is something that annoys me about many newer vehicles styling with the high skirt panels/low windows.
@oldretrogamer783 жыл бұрын
@@sergeantbigmac But there are downsides to the car as well -- In my experience Subaru engines are good, until they aren't. Meaning there have been issues with headgaskets over the years and I know about that personally. Also, undercarriage rust -- mine is 10 years and very low mileage and its got a lot of rust on the exhaust system.

Another good thing about Forester, the oil filter is top mounted and direct access. The oil-pan's bolt can also be accessed directly, so you don't need to take off a plate first to get to it. My point is, oil change will be easy for DIY. It'd cost you only $30 for full syn and oil filter. If you get a fumoto valve, it would be even easier. This is really a car that works for you.
@kellingtonlink9563 жыл бұрын

Thank you for the great review! A friend of mine picked up a brand new 2022 Forester Touring trim with only 8 miles on it, just a couple of months ago. It's not a fancy car, however, it is more than just a point A - point B transportation. I was impressed by its body style, interior space, features, AND the engine power. No, it doesn't move like an SUV with either a V6 or a turbo charged engine, however, I felt that the Forester's naturally aspirated 4 cylinder engine had enough power for everyday around-town driving. On the freeways, yes, just a bit more power would be better, but I didn't think it was terrible at all. For a compact SUV, I think a smaller 2.7 liter V6 engine with around 200 ~ 210 horses wouldn't be too bad.

We had a 2014 Forester when the new redesign debuted. We absolutely loved it but hated the fact that little issues kept popping up here and there (needed a new CV half shaft, some rusting issues, constant bulb replacements, etc..). The CVT failed after 120,000 miles and Subaru covered it. We got a CX-5 after that. Subaru is a stand up company. The Forester was one of our favorite vehicles, just wish we didn’t have those little issues. Great review guys!!! On the road to 200k. You deserve it!

We just bought a 2023 Forester Wilderness (pick it up next week). I wouldn't say it is perfect, but seems to do a lot right for what we want/need. Sure, a nicer stereo would have been nice. I guess more power can be fun. But the reality is, most of our driving is zipping around town with a bit of rural driving mixed in and we don't put that many miles on our vehicles anyway. We've never owned a Subaru before, but we bought an extra warranty package (in case something happens) and we are good at ensure regular maintenance is done so hopefully it will be reliable for us (and the warranty will cover any issues if they pop up). We are trading in our 2016 Kia Sorento EX (2.0L Turbo), which has been reasonably good, but it's getting a bit old and since vehicle values are high on used cars we figured it's not a bad time to get something different now. The Sorento is not very good on gas (as is the case for most turbo vehicles) as we typically see fuel economy numbers in the 12L/100kms range (can drop to 9s on the highway though). Yes, the extra power from the turbo engine is nice, but you spend way more on fuel for them so we're fine with the regular engine in the Subaru. We're stuck in traffic 80% of the time anyway so 0-60 times and extra power is often a useless thing to spend more money on, especially on a crossover like this. If you're buying a sports car, sure spend the money on a higher power option if you want (especially if you are going to track it), but not really worth it for regular people movers like these (which is why they dropped the XT model as it wasn't a high volume seller anyway).

I’m not sure a short review like this can really capture the essence of the new 22’ Forester. We owned the original 2019 new body style Sport, and quite frankly could not have been more happy. In this for you have an option to press a button on the steering wheel to get better transmission response and performance on the highway. The gas mileage is phenomenal, and the overall package is excellent. We did replace the 19 with a 22 this past week, and the new front very sharp. Not only are Subarus fantastic vehicles, they are safe, probably the safest Japanese product out there, and the resale is off the charts. We actually had thousands of dollars of equity in our vehicle, and still kept our payment exactly where it was three years ago. Whether you’re driving in rain, which the vehicle excellent, or snow, they are truly excellent vehicles. We are car people and have driven everything you can think of, but for overall value you cannot go wrong with the Subaru products. No we do not work for Subaru, we are just smart, value oriented, buyers of good products.

I have a 2018 XT, and last week it was snowing very hard, all my neighbors in West Van parked on the road, I was the only one still in the garage, even my driveways is about 20 degree sloped and 10 meters length. When heaviest snow (about 25 cm), it took about 5 attempts with X-mode on and traction off to go up, but going down is no problem at all. When it's light snow (10cm), it's nothing. When you have Subaru, you don't need shovel.

I think the Forester is a remarkable SUV for the money. The only concern I have is the small engine. The Forester uses the same 2.5 Liter boxer engine as the Crosstrek however the Forester is 230 pounds heavier. This might account for the lackluster engine performance in the Forester.

I bought a 2022 Subaru Outback because the forester wasn’t available on dealer lots. I really wanted the forester in sport trim. I’m still super happy with the Outback, but wonder how much happier I could be. I love the ride quality and how quiet the interior is on the Outback. My father has a 2019 forester and it has more wind noise on the highway by comparison. Hopefully they fixed that for 2022. My only gripe about the Outback is seating position. If I raise the seat up to where my legs are at a comfortable position for me, I don’t have enough headroom. The forester has a higher seating position and significantly more headroom when raising it up. I prefer to have my legs straight with my knees, where in the Outback I have to bend my legs upwards toward my knees. I’m 6’2” for reference. Shorter drivers wouldn’t have this issue.

I wasn't considering a Forester because I wanted a turbo SUV and so I was test droving other competitors. Although fast if you floor them, they had turbo lag around town and then would surge after a second. Around town it just doesn't work well and makes you feel like a kid learning a stick.. I also read car reviews saying CVT's are lousy. I eventually test drove the Forester not expecting much with the weaker engine on paper and a CVT. Guess what. It was so smooth and had more usable instant power than any turbo competitor. No lag. I love this engine/CVT combination and it gets good mileage. If descending hills I use the paddle shifters to hold gears. Avoid turbos with automatics. I've had my forester almost 3 years now. Love it.

I am very intrigued with the Forester…thanks for this great review! To me, it has the most attractive interior and dash than any vehicle in this segment. I love the info screen imbedded in the dash rather than the “tablet glued on top” style of many other brands. The Forester hybrid has been out for a couple of years now. Its a mild hybrid and dosn't seem worth the extra weight, money and having to lose the spare wheel because the battery needs the space. yes! I've heard the wilderness literally rides smoother than regular forester models. The Forester Turbo did not sell well enough in the USA, in part thanks to some consumer magazines that heavily criticized it for requiring Premium fuel, when in reality Premium was __recommended__ for the Turbo to make its maximum power (similar situation to the Mazda CX-5/50 Turbos). US Reviewers also felt turbo cost too much, though in top tier models adding a turbo was far less expensive ($2000 or so). Unfortunately the two Forester XT turbos I owned ('14 and '17) had serious engine reliability issues with valves and excessive sooting (fouling spark plugs). Their newer 2.4 Turbo, so far, doesn't seem to have those problems.

I just wanted to share my experience with the driver focus system as that was a HUGE factor in deciding on the touring trim. I mostly heard complaints about how annoying this system is and it felt like a back seat driver nanny. I got to test drive a 22 outback with this system and I have to say, you really have to try to get this system to chirp at you. It took about 4-5 secs of not having my eyes on the road in order for it to chirp at me. I can say without a doubt that after my test drive I am not concerned that Ill find this system annoying. Ofcoarse it's hard to compare a 20min test drive against actual ownership, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Subaru needs a proper hybrid module that can fit just behind the engine. The system should allow for outdoorsey electrical power for fridges, induction stoves. It'll take their Wilderness direction to the next level and differentiate it from the pack. In the UK and Germany, Subaru offers the "e-Boxer", which is a self-charging 2 litre engine with a little electric motor (ca. 17 PS).

Sold my 2020 forester, sheet metal was thin and door dings were so common. Rattled and felt less solid than the previous generation. Weight reduction and MPG were prioritized. I hated the ride quality and feared big bumps. Not going back.

Hi Motormouth crew! You guys do fantastic work and I wanted to thank you because today I placed my factory order for a touring model (usa) and this video was instrumental in my decision making process. I'm curious though... are the chrome accents just accents? Or do they have a function. Most ppl say it's just cosmetic, but if you look at the forester accesory brochure from subaru, the front bumper under guard accessory has fine print that says "standard on touring models." And the front bumper under guard accessory looks just like the chrome accents on the touring (USA trim)

Looking to trade in our 2018 Subaru outback. We also have a 2021 outback. So we are looking to trade our 2918 in on a forester. Thought about a Crosstrek, still thinking. We are looking at the 2024 models. It seems like there is some discounts available on the Forester. Really trying to determine which trim level. Seem to be drawn to the sport, but I really wish it had the complete Startex seats would welcome any additional thoughts, advice, or recommendations!

I like these wagons. With gas prices going way up and staying up these vehicles are a better alternative to a truck. ..As for the hot topic.. i think its Zack’s passenger.

We have a hybrid option in Australia (it’s more of a mild hybrid but they don’t call it that) and it barley sells. It has the same system as the XV (crostrek) which is a 2.0 with a motor in the cvt and a small battery under the boot. It’s very slow, gets barely any better fuel economy. Even the sales person said to avoid it and just go for the 2.5. If the sold it with the 2.5 and not the 2.0 it would probably sell better

Great video! I have two boys (14,11) and am looking at Rav4,Forester,Outback. We Are active and MNB and ski. Im downsizing from an ‘05 Yukon. What would you suggest? I like the new Outback but they are like $55k for a GT.

There just doesn't seems to be enough softroaders in the market now. You either have hard core offroaders such as Wrangler and Defender, or generic SUV such as Highlander, RAV4 etc. Subaru Wilderness can be a good middle of the road choice.

Have you any information on the battery? I have a 2015 Forester now, and am just finding I need a fourth battery in just over 8 years. I have never had that problem with past Subaru's I was told the battery was made by Subaru? Why is the battery so poorly designed, or do I have a problem with the charging system. I now need my 4th battery, and I do not like that at all.. Has anyone else had this problem? I have 128,000 KM on the vehicle, not very much. I know about the need to allow the charging time to charge between each start. It is not that.

Switched from fully loaded Mazda CX-5 and the Subaru seems like an upgrade in many aspects. Subaru managed to perfect the CVT with this engine. It has less HP compared to Mazda (non turbo) but feels faster. The simulated downshifts are much better than Mazda’s 6 speed auto trans too, which is really mind boggling. I don’t know how that’s possible but it’s just better and smoother. The car feels airy, spacious and solid. Love the hood view from the driver seat. If you opt for the HK upgraded sound, it blows the Bose from Mazda out of the water (and also Mark Levinson from Lexus). Here is the kicker - this car can compete with a Lexus NX and Lexus GX470 at the same time. It is huge inside but compact on the outside, as it is more taller than long. The phone remote start is $2 a month which is great in winter. The best thing about the Forester is that Subaru hasn’t switched to the massive all touch screen as with WRX, Legacy and Outback so people like me who don't want all touch, this is a great experience. Lastly, the seats are astronomically better than the CX5 seats. Much more butt room and not narrow. The RAV4 is not even in the same league, sorry. The space, engine, sound system, visibility, safety and AWD system are all worse compared to the Forester. It's a step down for sure.

@@CJ-zz9ts yeah, Ascent is known to have issues. Another plus for the Forester as it is not using to 2.4 turbo from the Ascent. The Ascent also exists for 3 years only, so issues will be there, logically. My Legacy had no mechanical issues, "only SW" with the head unit. At the time very annoying but overall great car. The Forester seems to be refined really well.

We definitely would have bought a Forester if it came as a hybrid. I really love the new dark green and still like the saddle leather interior. We went with the Venza Limited and we're very happy but it would have been nice to save a bit of money to get a Forester Hybrid. We hope that Subaru's connection will pay off with the Toyota Hybrid system being shared. The same would be great for the Mazda CX5.
@wind7sailor2 жыл бұрын
We like the better interior dimensions of the Forester over the Venza, but with other Hybrid options, this Forester's mediocre engine and cvt transmission drops it down our list. It needs a hybrid system like Hyundai or Toyota.

Why does the Forester have a much bigger sunroof/moonroof than the Outback? I thought the Outback was the top model? Do you know the answer to the sunroof/moonroof question?
