When playing with others, do ALL the players need to have the same mods installed, or is it only the host who needs to have the mods?

it's only the host i'm pretty sure, i think when you join a lobby it installs the mods that are used on said lobby

How can you be sure that any of the mods you download when joining public servers are free of like viruses or trojans? It feels sketchy to join random lobbies and have to download stuff when this isn't like an official game made by a company and what not

All I can say is, try and get a unmodified rom. Specifically a non extended rom.
