Updated Google Pixel 6 Root Tutorial with Magisk 24.1 | Jan 2022

There's a new stable version of Magisk available and that changes the way we can root the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, so here's an updated guide.

I've already done two different videos showing how to root the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro but things keep changing so an up to date version is needed yet again. This week, the developer of Magisk released version 24 of his root tool for Android and that meanst here's a new way to root the latest Pixel smartphones from Google.
Thankfully, the process is much easier than it used to be and it will resemble the traditional root process that many of you may already be familiar with.
Rooting the Pixel 6 requires you to have the bootloader unlocked already. So if you haven't done that yet either, check down in the video description below and I'll include a link to a guide showing you how all of that is done.
Then, you will need to download and extract the contents of the Google Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro firmware that you're currently running on your phone. We download this firmware directly from Google's servers and then extract it so that we can modify the the boot.img file (which is needed to gain root access).

I download this file to the PC and then copy the boot.img file over to my phone, but you could just download and extract it onto your phone if you'd like. No matter which method you choose, the goal is to get the boot.img file onto the Pixel 6.
Now, we need to install the Magisk APK from the developer's GitHub page. I generally recommend you download the latest version in tutorials like these, but if you're wanting to use the same version I have, version 24.x is what I'm using here in this video.

1. Intro [00:00]
2. Download the matching firmware [01:22]
3. Copy the boot.img file to the Pixel 6 [02:24]
4. Open Magisk v24 or later [03:30]
5. Tap the "Install" button at the top right [04:10]
6. Select and Patch a File [04:20]
7. And tap the "Let's Go" option when ready [04:35]
8. Copy the magisk_patched file back to the PC [05:22]
9. Boot the Pixel 6 into Fastboot Mode [05:54]
10. Connect it to the PC with a USB cable
11. Execute the Fastboot command [07:00]
12. Restart the Google Pixel 6 Pro [08:40]
13. Check Magisk [09:55]
14. And confirm root access [10:33]

I will need to do an updated 'ota update tutorial' that works while letting you keep root access. since the previous one I did involves the whole vbmeta/vertification stuff and that is no longer needed I may even look into doing these updates via the Google Factory Images website (with webadb support from chrome). or maybe that would be best for a separate video let me know if you'd rather see an adb sideload version or a webadb one. ultimately I'll cover both but I could prioritize one over the other if there's a preference from you/everyone else let me know your thoughts, everyone

Working for the July 2022 update you forgot to mention to put the magisk_patched-.img file inside the directory where fastboot is installed in my case it was in the C:\Program Files (x86)\ADB and Fastboot++ directory Thank you

Duo to screwing up the precess form an OTA update i had to do it from scratch and it went great due to your video. Just got my self rooted on April patch on 24.3 beta. know could you do a video on where to get all my modules? lol I used to use the index in magsik but they seem to have removed that.

Can someone please tell me - will rooting my pixel 6 pro allow me to charge it faster. The current charging limitations are a total farce - its like google want me to be on 17% battery all the time.. i dont want to be tethered to a wall charger 24/7 - just so my phone's battery can live 100 years!

Awesome video. One question in my work I need to use the Duo Mobile App(2FA). Is it possible to bypass the root verification to avoid losing access to Duo Mobile? Anyone with experience on that?

Got To the Point where you need to put the patched .img into the ADB folder but there is none. where is it located?

Seems like a really easy to follow tutorial! However, I am stuck in a boot cycle once I flash the patched Magisk file? Any idea on troubleshooting?

you could try booting into recovery mode and performing a factory data reset. failing that, you could flash the stock boot.img file (from the firmware download) and it should put things back to how they were (and boot normally so you could try again)

yes, the process is exactly the same. just make sure you patch the boot.img file from the android 13 beta firmware

I need to look into lsposed in more detail (it's been awhile since I've installed xposed), but I assume lsposed will need to be updated (if it hasn't been already) to support android 12 and the new version of magisk I suspect zygisk could replace lsposed (for the most part) if someone can do the work to port over those mods.

google pay should work. but if you have any trouble, then you'll want to install the safetynet fix module that I have done a video about here on this channel with the module active, google pay will work perfectly
