I've been a Penguin fan since I was 10 in 1990. I have seen some of the best hockey players the world has ever seen. 15 scoring titles, 7 MVP's, and 5, count them 5, Stanley Cups. Drafting 4 generational talents is almost unheard of, and then winning the Sidney Crosby sweepstakes? This team is special, and I realize how lucky I am as a fan. Thank you for the excellent analysis of my favorite team.

Well when your team struggles bad, and you have to tank to bring in guys like Lemieux, Crosby, Malkin, Jagr, Fleury (all top 5 draft picks, many of which who played at the same time), how would you not win all that? I’m not tryna tarnish what’s been accomplished, but Pens fans act like their team is immune to losing/ have always been great, when really they built their success falling badly for a decent long while. They were the worst team in the NHL before Lemieux stepped in. They have had many high draft pick generational talents who carried their teams to cups. Nevertheless, it’s easier said than done, and they did not disappoint like we see many teams with stacked talent do.

I vividly remember 1967-1983. Other than the playoff meltdown of 1975 to the Islanders, this team was tough to stomach year after year. Best move they ever made was thoroughly tanking the 1983 season to get Lemieux. And many kudos to Les Binkley, their first netminder, and Greg Polis. Sullivan hated Pouliot's work ethic, which was heavily rumored to be chemically impaired.

So if Crosby didn’t lose almost 150 games due to concussion and a lockout, he would EASILY be 200 points higher on this list, meaning he would be only 300 behind Mario. And knowing Sid, that would only take him 4 maybe 5 years at the most to do. Thats insane. Just the fact that Sidney Crosby could have ended his career (ik its not over yet but 150 games in his absolute prime is an insane loss) with 1800 points IN THE MODERN ERA

I think a Craig Patrick video would be interesting. As pointed out, he was great at winning big trades in the early to mid 90s. He had to jettison some key players because of $$$ but kept the team competitive by grabbing Lang and Straka off the scrapheap (though his drafting later in the 90s was pretty bad). His trade record 2000 on wards was REALLY bad. Yeah, the team had no money but he basically got nothing for Jagr, Straka, Kasper and Lang (well, literally nothing). Post lockout the team was still a disaster but he did draft in consecutive years Orpik, Whitney, Fleury, Crosby and Malkin. Overall I'd say a solid run but with note without some major shortcomings mixed in.

Diehard pens fan here but want to say that the pens and oilers have been two of the luckiest franchises to ever exist. First off, for the pens to get lemieux, one of the best players to ever play the game and then get Crosby is literally insane. Not to mention having jagr and geno to pair with them. The oilers also struck lightning twice to get the best player to ever play the game in Gretzky (if you go by points) and to also get mcdavid decades later just doesn’t seem right to the rest of the league. As a aftermath what would have happen if they didnt trade jagr to capitals and do they suck with Jagr in 2002-06. If they didnt suck no Crosby/malkin picks??. Another one that they draft Pouliot instead Filip Forsberg........why...:). Of course i would have love see Jagr to coming after Khl-years in penguins with 87/71.....but no...:(.
