Hey, internet family 💚 I recorded this video before my health took a turn (apart from some overlay footage!) which is why I’m so WELL in the video 😂 The past month has been tough which you’ll know about if you follow me on Instagram but I will post an update video next week or the following week about all that 🫠 For now let us enjoy a video about the reality of renovating! It’s slow…it’s messy…it comes with regrets…but it’s extremely satisfying! Xxx

I wanted to affirm your feelings about your kids starting to have memories of the room they share together. The big feature of the room I shared with my brother was my Dad putting glow in the dark stars on the ceiling in the constellation of Orion. For 8 years we shared that room. 15 something years later, my brother and I got matching tattoos of Orion 💚

Aw that's SO BLOODY SWEET! I love editing. I feel like if I hired an editor they'd lose a lot, nobody would ever edit them the same way I do. I know there are people out there far more talented at editing than I am but sometimes it's not about the quality but the personality behind it...I do know some editors have managed to match the creator's energy 100% but I'd just be too scared to ever hand that job over to someone else! Even though it takes me so long and I'm trying to fit it in during naps etc haha! xx

@melaniemurphyofficial I was telling my partner about your editing recently! I was telling him how I've noticed a lot of KZbin creators moving towards longer, unedited videos that a basically streams, that I just miss the artistic editing I loved about KZbin back in the day and that your videos still have the editing magic which I'm obsessed with!!!

2 relatively cheap ideas that could make a big difference: 1) one way mirror stickers or faux coloured glass stickers on the roof of the conservatory, that way you still get some light without the excess heat and exposure. 2) a coat of paint in the kitchen… you could even paint the floor if you plan to replace them anyway… at least in the meantime you’ll like to be in there.
@alissa6380
@alissa6380 9 ай бұрын
seconding both of these. you could also paint the kitchen cabinets if you're not a fan of that particular wood texture! in general, while renovations are exhausting, if something needs a lot of work that you know won't get done for a long time, it can be absolutely worth it to make a few small changes to make it more pleasant in the meantime, because that's where life is happening right now!

THANK YOU Melanie & Thomas for being SO real about your renovating process! OMG I feel so seen! My partner and I got a house from the 80s and there‘s so much time and costs that go into it and although we are in our 2nd year in there, too, I feel like there‘s no light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to renovations! Although we have no kids, yet, I study full-time and my partner works full-time & we own 2 dogs 🙈 I can‘t imagine how it must be with 2 kids … chapeau!! 🎩 you both are AMAZING!!! I really hope you get well soon, Melanie ❤💐

6:08 I saw a radiator cover at a friend’s place, and I was looking into it myself until I landed on a few online forums where people shared how much their electricity bills had gone up because of the radiator covers. It makes sense though considering the air won’t flow out in the room freely with s cover even if the cover has holes/gaps in it. I abandonned the idea right away after that and figured I rather live with ugly exposed radiators rather than nice covered radiators and a hefty electricity bill. I can totally see both of your points but am lugging when I see Thomas’ reaction because my own reaction was ”no, nope nope. No thanks”, after seeing how much extra it could cost even if I built the covers myself. Now when the ugly exposed ones bothers me, I rest in the reality of how adorable my cat looks when she snuggles her lil back up against the radiator during the winter.

18:06, re: the hook in the blue bathroom that is off-center, it actually looks aaalmost center between the shower and the actual door (not the jamb, or whatever it's called) and was actually probably intentionally put as far from the shower wall as the jamb would allow to avoid towels getting musty, so if you look at it from that angle (and maybe squint a little, because it *could* be a few more millimeters to the left), maybe it won't bother you anymore? 😁

Love the plan for a sauna! It doesn't have to be too expensive - simple is lovely. As someone from the Swedish-Finland border area where sauna bathing is just essential for everyday life it'll for sure be the very first thing we're building when we buy a house! Following the tradition of my father immediatly building one all three times he's moved to a new house lol

P.S. I just got around to watching the video to the closet part and I sit here on the floor, crying my heart out. When you said „a framed picture of Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte“ it broke all my barriers. My mom passed away 2 years ago and SATC was our „thing“ we had since I was 16. we owned the DVD boxes and watched it every week while having a cocktail together. Our house belonged to her before and she had a walk-in closet. I’ve dreamed of painting it blue and having a framed pic of the SATC girls and one of her right next to it since she passed 😢 seeing you making this dream a reality hot a soft spot. Kindred spirits ❤ that‘s why I love watching your videos!

I've been watching the renovations here and on Instagram since the beginning and oh boy it's so beautiful!! Now seeing it all together I'm shocked at how much you've done (especially with little kids in tow), but seeing the before pictures the house already was charming by itself, so it makes sense how even the parts that haven't been renovated look good and cozy. I love how much character your house has, and yeah it takes a while to make it all feel like you but in the long run I bet that will make it better. As for the art on the walls, there are some frames that open easily to display your kids' drawings that I think you'd love!

I really struggle with decision paralysis, i just cant seem to just pick a thing to do because then im like, oh but then do we need to do x y z first, and basically just dont know where to start! these videos are so hopeful and I love your ambition. Some recommendations for what you mentioned in the video: - Futon has some cheap solid storage boxes which you can throw shoes and bits into. Really handy and very much easy to use in different spaces - when I’m wanting less costly art, that’s still good, I try and look at some of the local artist venues rather than galleries as the art is A LOT cheaper, or try and visit a student show where they often sell prints cheap. - I don’t know if they have the same in Ireland, but Scotland is filled with old houses which do car boot sales and often sell lots of older furniture, art, books and bits and bobs; especially when the property is up for sale. I found them through things like National trust events and whatnot, and you can get much cheaper stuff from the actual place it’s from! - If I need something which I know isn’t gonna be cheap but I don’t want to end up with something low quality I often go to the John Lewis in my region which has their returns and items which can’t be resold as new as they were returned and uninstalled. Mines in Glasgow, and you often get things like appliances (I got a fridge once from it), some furniture which had to be dismantled, or custom made furniture such as their chairs and sofas with funny colours which won’t sell again, and they have them for like 30% off and more. The washing machine I got was a return and it was completely functional, and got it for £400 off with free install 👍 it’s a part of their new sustainable bid, but you have to know where yours is, as it’s not advertised and it’s sometimes only for staff on some days. The wholesale is SO good though for shopping for things like that. - for the indoor trees: the kiwi grower on KZbin has a great few videos on growing trees from fruit seeds (like pomegranate and other exotics) and some of them are indoor! Really inexpensive way to do that and something you can do with the family to grow it together.

I love bungalows but they’re so rarely built in England that they’re often times more expensive than buying a regular house. My in laws want one but the ones they look at cost almost as much as they’d get for selling their detached, two story, 4 bed house with a massive garden 🤯

It's a lovely home and let's be honest who actually wants to live in perfectly designed home? Maybe it's just me but a home where you feel nobody 'lives' there doesn't feel homey or welcoming.

Around the 3:10 mark when your dad is in the kitchen, you can very clearly see your daughter’s face - you might want to blur this out for her privacy

I have tried twice in the KZbin editor, still says processing 😩 This is why I do so few videos these days with them around when they’re running all over the place it’s impossible to make videos! 😂🙈 Deleting any comments about this so hopefully less people notice, just a heads up, but it will be blurred soon, this website can be painfully slow with editor updates xx
