I have been natural all my life and heard the same thing but then people saw my waves and curls and how diverse my hair is they decided years later to go natural. They used to shame their selves with comments like nappy naps and the kitchen comments. I just told them to train the hair it will do what you want it to do within reason.

Your hair is literally goals. Cause I don't know any naturals that not only have long hair but it's thick. There are so many natural whose hair might be long but it's thinned out at the bottom or has crazy layers or whatever but your hair is so even, thick, long, and healthy

The hardest part was figuring out what worked and what didn't. So many bad hair days lol. I didn't get a lot of support from my mom early on and I also had to ignore her comments because I knew those bad hair days were temporary. I can't blame her though because it was bad for so long lol. Now she's better about it but I know she'll love it when she sees how long I can get it.

Genetics?! I HATE when people say dumb shit like that! All hair is programmed to grow, EASILY. Indian, White, hispanic Mixed and yes, PLAIN OLE BLACK!! People just like to be like, oh my genetics are bad - thats why it wont grow. Um no, unless you have alopecia (which is reversible) you just lazy and don't want to know HOW to take care of your hair! I cut my hair off 2 times and it came back different ways because i learned how to take care of it! Now its long af!

Hi bbeautymarked. I know your alopecia question wasn't posed to me but I'd suggest you do what I did when I was diagnosed 3 years ago and go see a dermatologist who is comfortable with black hair. My dermatologist was suggested by my long term hair specialist who referred me when noticing horrible negative changes in my hair during routine salon visits without a change to her styling and care technique to my hair. So the dermatologist took a biopsy of my hair confirming alopecia and put me on monthly scalp injections at her office in addition to prescribing Propecia daily oral meds and prescribing a daily scalp compound ointment cream mixture to be applied directly to my scalp. As a result my hair recovered about 95% of the loss but the 5% that I still struggle with in the very front of my hair may be due to irreversible hair follicle damage because I didn't get diagnosed soon enough.. That's why you have to get under the treatment of a dermatologist so that treatment can start ASAP to prevent irreversible hair loss. Hope this helps.

i actually started caring about my hair a lot more after i started watching your videos. we might not have the same curl type, but your videos actually motivate me a lot. over here in Italy you can't really find a lot of curly girls who are going natural and embracing the curls, as the spaghetti look is still a huge trend, but at least I don't feel alone as I can relate to many youtubers. My grandma etc is native and my hair has still never reached past armpit length lol! So there goes that myth about certain races having extreme length. Now I do cut bobs every year but after 7 years straight of being without relaxer this is my first time just letting it grow so we shall see. I just want midback length hair but I also want my volume back as well..
@theesky
@theesky 6 жыл бұрын
Lashaunda Payton Villarreal moisturizing to keep that hydration in your hair will give you that volume. However if your hair is naturally thin, you will probably be good with a mousse. It will lock in the moisture without weighing down your hair so there will be volume. If you hair is naturally thick, definitely make sure you're moisturizing. My hair is very dense and after I went natural I realized that if I didn't keep it moisturized it won't look as thick as it naturally is. Also, massage your scalp and keep the blood flow going. DNA may help you, but you have to put in the work. You'll get to your goal soon enough 💪🤞

I got my first perm when I was 17 and you couldn't tell me nothing. After the shedding and breakage for many years , I stopped getting my hair relaxed in 2005, I would only get it relaxed 3x yr anyway. Even though my hair is super thick and sometimes rebellious I will not go back. I went back to basics and started using Blue Magic like my mom did when I was younger. I can't with all of these natural hair products. I frequently have it in a protective style so I don't cut it. So far it's shoulder blade length and thick! Stay strong ladies! Thank you Ebony for sharing your story.

Thanks Ebony for the encouragement. I just did the big chop March 2017 and I now use wigs for protective styling. I cut off shoulder length hair to an almost bald length. I could not even lift my hair with my fingertips, it was very very short. I just got tired of using perms. As of today, August 2017, 5 months later, I can now wear my hair in cornrows. I still use my wigs but I can't wait to be free of them and wear my own hair. I want more length before I am completely done with wigs. Thanks again.

I've just discovered your channel and finally I've found someone with almost identical hair as me! (I'm full black). I do come from long hair family (both parents side) one of my aunts had longest hair past her knees touching her calves. Other members have much longer hair than me (mine currently shoulder length). I've been natural over 29 years I stopped relaxing when i was 18yrs. Unfortunately my hair is not as long nor as dense as yours (currently going through changes so its shredding a lot!). I stopped using hairdressers as not one in all my years has ever been able to manage my hair correctly! I'm trying to manage it myself through trial and error and if honest with little effort! Because I wasn't that invested before although ironically its in best condition its ever been and seems to be growing at a remarkable rate? including my greys, but im loving them as they look stunning in my hair (can't believe it). Anyway, I just wanted to give you a thumbs up, don't know if you have any tips to help thicken hair up a little bit, I've now subscribed and will watch through rest of your videos. All the best.😊

Angel Harmony I tell ppl all the time there are multiple “ugly stages” in hair growth. From TWA to chin length here’s an ugly stage and from shoulder to collarbone there’s an ugly stage. How I got past the shoulder was a lot of ticked hairstyles. 2 strand twists and tuck/pin into styles. Take down over the weekend for a twistout then do it all over again. After a while I realized that when I twisted my hair was suddenly at my armpit. You just have to stop looking at it really or else it’ll drive you crazy

I wore my hair in buns or an afro puff for almost a year until my hair grew past my shoulders. Make sure you don't wear it down a lot during this time so it doesn't rub against your shoulders. It's growing. It's just not getting past the shoulders. Trust me. It will grow. Once the hair grows to arm pit length, you are golden! Also, please deep condition your hair every week. I cannot stress this enough. I wash and deep condition weekly and co-wash and condition mid-week or I moisturize the hell out of it and oil my ends. Dry hair equals breakage. Keep the ends moisturized.

Great video and advice. I'm officially 10 months into transitioning. I have always gone to the beauty shop once weekly because I've never been good at doing my own hair. I've continued this while transitioning but changed my products and hairstyles. My go to style has been twist outs but they have not been looking as good the last 2 months. So it has definitely been frustrating because I expected the twist out to look better as time went on and more of my hair became natural. But I am just going to keep pushing through this phase. Thanks for the motivation and inspiration because the struggle has definitely been REAL!

People saying it's genetic to be able to grow long hair is crazy. Length is not genetic. The amount of time in the anagen phase (growth phase) can be genetics but can still be different for members of the same family. The growth phase is 3-5 years which can result in 18-30inches. Everyone can grow hair. 80-90% of your hair is in anagen phase at one time. It won't stop at a certain length. It's about retaining length. People should not discredit others just because they have had long hair forever. Take advice they obviously know how to keep their length. Great video Ebony!

I lost so much hair from the damage of perming that I was forced to undergo the Big Chop! I am currently just a little over my first year as a naturalista but I seem to be making progress and Ebony you're right length retention is very noticeable since going natural. My permed hair coming up as a kid was exactly the length of yours but over the years the damage was too much to deal with and that is when I decided to go natural. So thanks Ebony for you words of encouragement and the wealth of info you provide us with. I wanna give up sometimes because it is a challenge from day to day.

*All hair grows..unless there's some sort of illness, issue i.e..alopecia etc. Most receive growth of 1/2 inch per month. It's what we're doing with that 1/2 inch each month... many of us have killed our hair, or snatched it out of our scalp with tight braids or placed so many chemicals on it..that it just breaks off when the wind blows making it seem that the hair is incapable of growing.............. I try to use all shampoo n' conditioners that have natural ingredients. No parabens, Sulfates etc.... Shampoo soaps I love. Keeping heat off as much as possible and really NOT cutting my hair is what works for me. Once I allowed my hair to grow for 3 years straight no cutting... it grew all the way down to my underwear... that year I cut several inches but pretty much grew it back... I'm at a point where I will never ever cut my hair again and I try to seriously take care of the hair that I have. Your hair is Gorgeous.. it looks beautiful and healthy. I love it! :-)

I went back to relaxing a couple of months ago after being natural for about 6 years. I dont think that I ever found the right regimen to keep with it. But this video makes me want to go back to natural.

I love this video. Thank you for sharing the before and after of your hair. It goes a long way. You really spoke to me when you said you have to love yourself without your hair....I’m someone who loves long hair. I had long hair as a kid but after the relaxer it never grew well. I stopped relaxing my hair years ago but was not comfortable wearing my hair out so I wore wigs all the time but still maintained a good hair routine. about 3 weeks ago I decided to just wear my natural hair out short kinky and all...and oh my gosh...it is thicker and just feels better. I steam treat and deep condition my hair twice a week and I go to the salon for a trim every 6 weeks because I did have a lot damage but didn’t feel comfortable with a big chop. Now that my hair is getting air I feel it is growing even more. My curls are defined without much effort. Soon I will push my trim to 8 weeks then 12 weeks then hopefully one day I will get to only trimming my hair twice a year. I saw a lot about genetics. While genetics play a part if you don’t take of your hair it will break. Kudos to those who hair stays great without a routine but that’s not most of us. You have to put in work with black hair in order for it to grow to great lengths and be healthy. Like anything else in life you have to work hard and be consistent if you want more than average results. Also you have to research good products! Most of what’s on the shelves are not good for black hair. NIH says black hair products have 30% more chemicals then white hair products. My hair has changed because I use products that have minimal chemicals as well so does my hair stylist. I changed my shower head to dispense filter water with Vitamin A and E as well because even the water is hard on our hair. Well anyway- Thank you for this video. Really inspiring.

I relate to this so much. My hair is growing pretty long, still dry, but I’m learning. My mom made me do a big chop in 2013 and I was so mad at her for it, now it’s ok. I used to tie my hair up like yours until I learned how to do twist outs and braid outs. I rarely get box braids and other protective styles too. I don’t get sew ins and I haven’t had one since I was 9. I’ve come a long way.

Start checking out some videos from lazy naturals. You'll learn that even though you have loads of hair. There are so many short cuts you can make to take care of it. This will be such a benefit because most of the constant natural hair rules are WRONG. There are plenty of naturals that learned this fact, and have been free from the constant surplus of time. That we assume we have to spend to have thick, super long, healthy hair.

Thank you! Thank you!! Thank you for this video!!! My hair has always been between 2-6 inches past my shoulders while straightened, and that is what I’m accustomed to. Technically, I’ve been natural since 2002-2003, but I’ve continued to flatiron my hair. So when I try to go completely natural (wash n go’s, etc), I feel as though my hair looks a mess (nothing like all you beautiful KZbin ladies), so I give up and flatiron it again (in other words: locking myself into an unforgiving cycle). Also while my hair is the same length, it feels short because of the shrinkage. (And don’t get me wrong, I love the “curly’ness” of the shrinkage, but I’m not a fan of the length.) But, to put a close to my rambling, your video gives me hope. So, again, thank you!!

Omfgggggggggg when you said the short hair faze was sooo much easier I agree so much, I cut my hair boy short back in October 20th 2017 and i's already past my boobs... I mean the goal is to reach the middle of my back and all but damn do I really miss the days when I had realllly short hair, twisting was so much easier....

But, I'm glad along the way that I met wonderful people who gave unexpected tips. I'm glad that I went through it because it made me appreciate who I am. I never thought my hair could teach me that.

That would be me too, I was told my hair was too fine, which left my hair super limp and then I started doing my own relaxers. Lo and behold the over processing.... Girl it was brutal and it took me forever to figure that out, I thought my hair was naturally thin.... Nope just shot to death! Kmsl

Hey! I'm a new sub, I just stumbled on your channel and I absolutely love your hair. It's funny because I've just recentley started working on my youtube channel again and I wanted to create a natural hair journey video but felt discouraged because I just feel that there were more cons than pros on my journey. However watching this has encouraged me so much. Thanks for sharing xx

Do you have a video of what your hair routine was DURING your growth journey? If not, can you make one? I notice a lot of KZbinrs post what their current process is but, unless you stuck with the same routine you used in 2012, I want to know what all got you to this point. I know some probably learned that there were better products out there than the ones they used to use, but you still made it to this point of retaining health AND length with those products, which is something I struggle with. I feel like I've reached a plateau and I can't seem to get passed it. When I do, my ends are split (and I rarely straighten my hair...no more than 2-3x per year) and I have to cut the dead ends off and start again. 😖

It still baffles me when I see women who’ve always had long hair struggle with cutting their hair bc as a child I was known as the girl with big curly hair and I hated being associated with it (I’m the dark girl in my thumbnail). I couldn’t wait until I turned 18 to cut my hair bc, to me, that meant I was “grown” lol when I cut my hair off the first time I saw how others were attached to MY identity and MY hair more than I was and I was glad that I did it. To this day I’m 2yrs into regrowing my hair after 6 hair cuts (cut down to 3” or less) over the past 10yrs and I’m annoyed lol but I’m gonna stick it through this time.

Learning to love myself without my hair as my identity, that is exactly how i felt about going natural and also cutting all off because i was also always the girl with the long hair. I transitioned the first time but the second time because of straightening i had to cut off the long hair and now i am in the grow back but am enjoying the short hair and the ease of it.

Wow this really helped me. I'm still kinda stuggling with being confident with my short natural hair. But like you said it's all temporary and then people are gonna be asking what I did to grow my hair so long! lol I definitely felt that part because some people have something negative to say about why I cut my hair and then there's other with positive things to say as well. Overall great video I definitely can relate!
