There are alot of diy ideas on you tube in how to build your own canoe trolling motor mount, which seem decent and simple enough, but I was wondering is there a specific reason as to why they are all made to mount off the side of the canoe rather than straight out the back of the canoe? Just easier to build or something to do with performance or something? Thanks

Mostly, its because there isn't really a way to mount it to the very back, which would be ideal. A square backed canoe would be great for this. I usually put the battery in the front, slightly off center on the opposite side of the battery just to help with the balance.

Excellent and functional mount! Thanks for sharing... Respectfully suggest that the boards that the trolling motor (and finder) clamp to are oriented in their absolute weakest direction. Orienting these boards 90 degrees to where the grain will be running in the up and down direction will prevent these from breaking down the grain line. Thanks again & keep the ideas coming!

Very good point, I'm definitely not a carpenter by any means, but you do make a valid point!

Did you have any problems with the canoe wanting to tip or roll after you mounted the motor ? Any tips to balance it out from. Left to right perspective

I place the battery in the front, the weight helps balance it out plus I set it to the left, with the motor on the right, it is very stable.

I had one of those portable fish finders. I'm guessing it works for you.

It seems to be pretty accurate, thanks for watching!

Getting ready to setup a trolling motor on my 14 ft canoe. I like the mount as it gives a mounting point for other items; flag pole, rod holder... I am also considering sitting in the front, but a couple of issues may stop me. The front legroom is less (facing backwards) and I may have frequent passengers (they could sit either direction). How's the mount holding up?

It has held up very well. I like that I can mount or relocate rod holders, etc, and not drill into the canoe. Let me know how your set up goes!

Nice job on the set-up. I like the dual purpose motor and fish finder mount.

It's cool how that canoe has been in your family so long and the different modifications you have made!

Yes, a lot of fish have been caught in that canoe, and many more to come...I hope! I'm glad you liked it!

Awesome video, this is exactly what I want to do with my 16 ft fiberglass. I think I might go with a headlight too! Any advice for making a mount to the canoe that would be easy to add/remove?

I'm glad the video helped you! I used to use C-clamps to hold the bracket on. Never had any issues with it. If you don't mind drilling a couple holes, you could use bolts with wing nuts that you could tighten/loosen by hand.

I just bought a 16ft fiberglass canoe and I want to put a trolling motor on it. My family and I will be riding in it. We’re a family of four and we’ll be just under the weight limit for the canoe. I’m worried though that the added weight of the motor and battery will be too much to handle for the canoe. Do you think it would be too dangerous for all of us to ride in the canoe and add a motor and battery?

You definitely want to stay under the weight limit. I'm not sure what the battery or motor weighs (usually you can find out under product descriptions). It may be better just paddling. It will paddle really well when its loaded properly, too. Have fun on the water!

thanks very cool setup. I'd want to attach the battery in case/when i flipped the canoe over. really like the wood bracket. how long does your trolling motor go before battery runs out? also did u look at conventional depth finder vs fishing buddy? i had a fishing buddy but even with 9.9 horse had to make sure i remembered to pull it up. thanks for video

That green treated wood will react and pit the hell outta your aluminum. I learned that the hard way in my boat

Thanks for the advice, I will have to keep my eye on that.
