Thanks David for this and all your other fine videos and Tesla forum contributions. I've actually gone a different route. I disconnected the wifi and GSM antennas on my 2014 P85 that are located in the exterior mirrors. I'm affected by ChargeGate but (so far) I've dodged more recent "updates" that would have other otherwise nerfed my regen. (Interestingly, I still occasionally pull a two bar GSM signal when parked fairly close to one cell tower). Of course, I've lost Spotify and real-time updates to the Navigator, but there are simple alternatives to these (apps on my ten inch Samsung tab that has cellular connectivity). My only regret is that I didn't disconnect the antennas about three years ago....

A trick is to have the car connected to a dummy WiFi hotspot that doesn't have an internet connection. As long as the car is connected to WiFi it will not use the cellular data at all.

Tesla France made the modification for me for 220$ cause I didn't have the time to do it, and they didn't want to sell me the LTE card and sim without doing it themselves... as soon as I left tesla service center my GPS diidn't work anymore, they said just wait 1 or 2 days it will come back! It didn't come back! So I made a new ticket few days later complaining about my GPS! They answered me my SD card has died and now I need to pay 450$ to fix navigation! or 220$ just to check their work again.... I was sure it was not my SD, so today I took everything apart myself, and both my SD cards are perfectly fine! I cloned them and put brand new sandisk not to do the job again. Now I took apart the MCU1 and I can see J38 connected to J6, J7 to J34 and J37 to J5. What is the correct sequence please? J38 to GPS, J37 to J7 and J34 to J5??

I had my 4/2016 Model S with 64K mi screen go black two days ago. There was no way I could re-boot it so I took it to Tesla service today. The said a rebuilt/exchange MCU was $1146 installed. They said I could have the HW2 Infotainment upgrade for $2250 and I told them to go ahead with that. Awhile later they said they couldn't do the upgrade only the exchange because my S didn't have electric trunk lifts and they weren't allowed to do the infotainment update on my car as the version for my car was not available. I wonder if I try to read the chip and do the BGA soldering and fail if they would know the difference. At this point I am waiting to see if they can restore the file system and bring it back to life without spending > $1000. For over two years I have been complaining that the web browser worked when I got the car, then it stopped playing my USB drive, weeks after that it would not re-boot until I removed the USB and now it just plain will not boot. I was surprised however that the autopilot worked perfectly on the way to Tesla service with the black screen.

Is it safe to assume that that eMMC chip or the whole MCU itself can use different SIM cards from one carrier to another even if someone decides to bring their Tesla outside United States as a Gray Import vehicle?

I believe so. The Sim card seems to just a standard one

@jonnupe16454 жыл бұрын
I have two questions involving the connectivity of the Tesla series. Tldr; do you really need SIM card and how important is it? First one, will removing the SIM card prevent the MCU from working properly? ( ignoring obvious creature Comfort connectivity like GPS map downloads and music streaming). Second question, assuming that, yes the mcu would still work without the SIM card, can Tesla still send out updates or modifications to your Tesla. My gut feeling says no, considering the SIM card is literally for internet connection, but is there a secondary method of connecting to Tesla headquarters?

Great video sir! Tesla is trying to make me change my infotainment for $1500 rather just replace the 3g for LTE ($200) I also am getting my recall done at the same time regarding the slowed memory. They say for some reason the SD card will not read it when they try to complete this process so they are saying it will cost me $1200 to do or just go for the infotainment upgrade ($1500) and it will work fine. I find this to be total BS (excuse my language). I do not want to upgrade my infotainment because we are going to buy the newer X at some point. Do you think they are trying to pull a fast one on me?

@@DavidDrivesElectric ok so you would be able to technically switch out the internal components. But the programming is a whole different issue. Heard that part is what takes the longest at the sc. Also heard mcu2 requires a differ wiring harness

Yes the SIM card is on the board. But if you swap it out, you have to updates some settings in the car which I believe either needs root access or Tesla might do it.
