Updating the Kitchen | Summer Homemaking

Just in case this helps as you start on your lower cabinets…I’m a professional Decorative Artist and have painted many, many cabinet projects during my career. I know how tedious going around cabinet goes is, so this is my suggestion to make the project easier, yet not disrupt your home too badly: Try removing only a section of cabinet door/drawers at a time and complete that area with the two coats. Then replace those doors/drawers before moving on to the next section. This way you only have a couple of doors or a few drawer fronts out of place while you work. It’s amazing how much faster the project will go and with professional results in the end.

Loving the cream color. I think the satin paint will hold up and be more washable than the chalk paint. I love your color choices for your home. Can’t wait to see the kitchen project finished.

The kitchen is going to be so nice! I would never use chalk paint I just am not convinced as to its washabiliity/longevity. I think you're going to be very happy with the Benjamin Moore, I used that paint in satin finish (different color ) for my kitchen cabinets and they are holding up great 5 years later ~It's easy to wipe down and I am not having a problem with chipping. You are very brave to tackle projects with little guys underfoot but I remember having to do that back in the day or nothing would have ever gotten done, lol. I love the color you picked!

I painted my cabinets back in 2017 with a similar paint. It has held up great even with kids. I think it'll look great!

Also I didn't use a sealer so I could easily touch them up which I haven't had to do. I did lightly sand them prior to paint so maybe that's part of it

And where is he at when you’re filming? I have a 7month old Goldendoodle that we got last December. Her Finn is so cute and seems like a great member of the family, I bet lots of viewers would like to see the daily dog routine. I board dogs in my home and your doodle following you everywhere is pretty common for most dog breeds, I get followed into the bathroom by almost all of them, lol. I find that my dogs (and the ones I keep professionaly) rest and sleep when I am sitting but when I am up, they are up. Hope you are enjoying your pup, they are fun and a lot of work!

He even sits with me in the bathroom and just stares at me with his beautiful, loving eyes 🥴🤣 He scatters toys everywhere too so I’m curious if Hilary’s house looks like mine lol. Ours is a standard size Goldendoodle. He’s 70 lbs already but acts like a 5 lb pup 🥰

I recently "read" Presumed Innocent and Innocent by Scott Turow. They were quite good and (I think are currently a miniseries with Jake Gyllenhaal. Also, another that sticks out is The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath ( which was read by Jake's sister, Maggie)

Good for you on the kitchen cabinets. Ours our maple and it’s time to refinish them again and I am not looking forward to it. We have issues with the bottom collecting grease and grime and I’m going to look into the product you used as I hate sanding in the house.

I can't remember, if you have read The Echo of Old Books? After being on a waiting list for quite some time, my husband was finally able to get a copy, and is reading it now. I am so very proud of you for tackling the cabinets. That is quite an undertaking, I'm sure. For years I have been wanting ot paint our, but I am thinking it would be better to do AFTER we replace the counter tops? Becasue as you probably are very aware, one project leads to an other... Great choice of color. I can tell it's going to be lovely. My husband made our cabinets from my grandma's old walnut tree. I just had to use polyurethane on them. I put one coat. Silly me later put another coat and they looked better with one. What I need to know is will the sand and de glosser work on them so I can put on just 1 coat? Like you, I really love murder mysteries but I sometimes venture into other genres. Please, please read "The River We Remember" by William Kent Krueger. It really is a good book with an excellent message. I have read a few of his other books now and have liked some better than others but none have touched me like the one I mentioned.
