Any clue why it's telling me "this program cannot be run in dos mode" when I go to run the BIOS update? It also shortens the name of the update file from what it was in Windows

Its normal for the filename in DOS to be shortened. Not all BIOS updates run in DOS. If it doesn't run in DOS, your next best option is to run it using Hirens Boot USB or if you already have Windows running on your PC, you can run the BIOS update in Windows.

Is there a DOS program to read & print the bios information? I'm most interested getting the serial number. A bootable linux usb drive would also be ok.

DOS program? not too sure but Linux Mint works great for testing and getting info on each PC. I can test the GPU, WiFi connection, speakers, web cam and more all without installing anything. If you make some USB bootable drives for testing, you should have one for Linux Mint and one with Hiren's.

Im trying to use this method to update my bios with a modified rom file. However i keep getting errors. In the research ive done i need an afudos.exe as well as the rom in the drive but everytime i boot freedos its a new error. Do you know how to do it like this without error? Idk if i have the wrong version of afudos or what

There's a lot going on here. Let me put my thoughts into bullet points: - I'm not a big fan of updating your BIOS with a modified ROM file because you run the risk of bricking your PC - If it was modified, there should have been some instructions that came with it such as a readme file that explains the process...I would follow that - Some exe files may not run in DOS and that could be why you are getting errors - BIOS ROMS or BIN files are usually verified before they are executed. So another reason for the error is the BIOS updater is running the ROM and it is failing verification - Have you tried running the exe in Windows or Hirens? I would try that but again I would research and triple check everything before running a modified ROM

Not sure...if it works...chances are you may not even need to do a BIOS update. In these cases I would research the manufacturer's website and google the model...sometimes people will leave instructions on what they did. Not all PCs or servers need to have their BIOS updated...good reasons to update are CPU/Memory compatibility updates, Intel Virtualization update, security updates...if those are not needed...you may not even need to worry about updating your BIOS.

I have the exact same motherboard and have followed every step and it goes on as usual but on the first reboot it just reboots to nothing happening even though I just tried to install it. Does anyone have a fix?

Rom version should be newer than bios version is what i get ! I'm using an old laptop and I'm stuck at this point, is there any possible way to cancel it !?

its helpful if I know the brand/model. The ROM is typically the main BIOS image file. That error is basically saying you are trying to update your BIOS with an older version. In many cases...if it doesn't update, it will either do nothing or revert back to the previous working BIOS

I'm not sure...as far as BIOS updates go...Lenovo BIOS updates can be on the tricky side. I've bricked a Lenovo Tiny PC once and I was following Lenovo's instructions. My recommendation would be to load up Windows 10 or 11 and then use Lenovo's tool to identify your device on Lenovo's website and then allow it to detect and update the drivers. During this process it should also update the BIOS. You'll know by watching the updates and waiting for a prompt to restart the ThinkPad

What model is your HP? I believe the G3 and higher allow you to update the BIOS directly from the BIOS. I just updated an older G2 using hirens and running the .exe bios update

​@@ghazwanalshghai3893ok...based on the age of the laptop, it may be currently using 'Legacy' Boot. Try changing the boot method to 'UEFI' and then it may work.

Many newer hp's can have the BIOS updated right in the BIOS...which is pretty cool. If not, my go-to is HIREN's. Just make a bootable HIREN's USB and you can run the BIOS update executable...the other obvious option is to update it right from Windows

not all BIOS updates can run from DOS. When you download the latest BIOS, check to see if there are any instructions...that will give you a clue as to what the preferred method is to update the BIOS. I'll be honest...most newer systems have a BIOS updater either within the BIOS or from the boot menu. Check that first as I'd likely prefer that method over the DOS method. Dell has a BIOS updater right from the boot menu and hp has a BIOS updater inside the BIOS on most PCs from 2015 onwards.

There is no option to do it within the bios and the windows is working my issue is that the keyboard works in bios only not in windows. It's a Dell XPS that had windows on and now has windows 10 but the USB doesn't even work so I thought let me try another bios.

@@richardbraun6011If I were you, I'd try re-installing a fresh copy of Windows OR use the 'Reset this PC' tool in Windows 10 and do a system reset. I've seen this issue before and its a Windows issue not a BIOS issue. Updating the BIOS is a good thing to do but it will likely not fix your current problem

At 5:00 to 5:20 you talk about "Booting to DOS" & are gonna show us.... but I missed that part. My PC boots to Windows 7, not DoS. Guess I have to google a different video or such. Then, on figuring out booting from USB, it booted to Windows again and again until I disabled the SSD with Windows on it. Then on USB Boot, all I got was "Syntax error Syntax error Syntax error Syntax error" etc etc etc. Will look for someone who explains more.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean about Win32. Maybe they are referring to making sure your drive is formatted as FAT32?

some BIOS updates can be different depending on the manufacturer. Sometimes the manufacturer will include a readme file or instructions to go along with the update. I HIGHLY recommend reading these instructions as they were written by the developers and some updates are very specific with the file system on your USB, the name of the image, etc. Some models may even have two different BIOS versions from two different motherboards which can add a LOT of confusion...that is why I always read the instructions 2-3 times before running an update.

Custom build motherboard ASRock AB350M (AM4 chip) I want to downgrade, but in bios it is not allowed for CPU support list overwritting in later BIOS have 5.60 version with no returning option except this and possibility to brick it.

downgrading the BIOS can be tricky and sometimes not possible. So let me get this straight...the newer version of the BIOS doesn't support a CPU that was in the previous versions? I've never heard of that. You may want to contact the manufacturer and ask them.

I have one question though... in the dos why is the drive call "C:" but in windows its "G:"

It could be that Windows assigns the drive letter G because there may be other drives in your system. For example if you have an internal SD card reader...those can show up as multiple drives (one for each type of card) even if nothing is in the card reader. At the end of the day if we are talking about updating the bios in DOS...the drive letter is not really important...what's important is that you can access the files and folders on your USB drive that you booted from.

Im trying to update a gigabyte board. There are x3 files in the download needed for bios update. The x3 files are an autoexe.bat, efiflash.exe, and z87xud3h.F9 Obviously the .F9 file is the bios file, but loading this via Freedos like you did, i get as far as where it lists the x3 files and it just sits there doing nothing. What file do i launch, and how do i launch it while dos is running 🤔 Do i even need all the files?

What I would do first is go back to the gigabyte bios and see if they have a BIOS flash utility within the BIOS. I know most gaming motherboards have that. I don't think I've ever used dos when flashing one of those boards

@pjasonq Thanks for the reply. I previously used the Q-flash utility but it said file is out of date, and the efiflash application had issues with a 64bit O.S so it wouldn't launch. (I then threw a 32bit O.S win10 on a spare drive and it still wouldn't launch). Then I tried your method. Now however, I just used a gigabyte utility called @bios. This worked great, no issues so far and the upgraded cpu now boots to desktop (it kept going through a boot loop previously, power on/off every 5 secs). So job done 👍 Thanks for the speedy reply, appreciate it 👍
