My dad passed away after ignoring tingling feelings in his legs and feet. Believing it was just his diabetes playing up. Me and my mum wanted him to go to doctors and tried to persuade him but he would always say it wasn’t that serious and he’d be fine. He died of an aneurism in his leg in 2017. 62 years old. I miss him everyday. Please, I emplore all of you, anything unusual or that worries you go see your doctor as soon as you can. Better to get there and be told all is fine then to leave it for days and weeks and have it get worse. Always better to be safe than sorry x

I just lost my dad not to long ago. An autopsy wasn't done but we're pretty sure it was a heart attack. He was 68 and was in that generation of guys that never complained about his pain. About 10 years ago he saw a cardiologist because his work told everyone to do so and the doctor said he had the "window maker." My dad called him a quack and now he's gone. Like you said, I miss him everyday.

Not a doctor but.... my dad was having stomach aches. This was odd to me because he exercises daily. I was in the last year of my high school nutrition and wellness STEM course at the time. I thought that it was my dad’s appendix, but I have a history of being a hypochondriac, so he didn’t believe me. The next morning, I woke up early (I had to get 3 baby teeth removed via surgery) and found my dad in extreme pain. One trip to the hospital later, it was determined that it WAS his appendix. When the doctor learned about the previous night, he told my dad, “listen to your kid next time.” Meanwhile, I was being taken to the children’s hospital for my surgery and understandably traumatized. They had to get one of those service dogs that usually are brought to younger kids. So, yeah. That’s my story.

Reminds me of when my dad had a heart attack while we were shoveling snow and I was only 13 but recognized the symptoms. He was in denial and didn’t want to go to the hospital but I made my step mom call 911 for an ambulance. He had to get surgery that day and he probably would’ve died if he didn’t have it

That last one I've seen personally. My wife has a condition that had never been discovered before. 7 Years, 4 hospitals plus hundreds of doctors and tests was agonizing. But watching 20 doctors pack into an MRI computer room with dumbfounded or fascinated faces was epic!

I had bad pneumonia in August 2015 and was hospitalized for it. I left after one day, AMA, and even though I was put on meds and an inhaler, it never went away and exploded into heart failure in 2015. My heart function was down to 10%.

My grandma was always like that. Never wanted to go to the doctor or get checkups and dismissed basically everything that happened to her, never wanting to stay still. One time she crushed her finger working in the yard and she said it was just a small gash. Mom basically had to pull her to the doctor where she got stitches. Apparently there was some muscle tissue that came out. In the end, this was her downfall. We noticed that she started to get winded after walking a short while and told her she had to see the doctor. She refused for a while untl she had more trouble in less time and then we had to force her. Turns out she had breast cancer and it had done methastasis into one of her lungs. Still managed to live to age 84 with all that. My mom, luckily, took that lesson to heart and the moment she felt something weird in her chest she got checked out and detected the very begining of breast cancer and could get rid of it with minor surgery and radiation therapy.

I work on a burn unit. The number of people who leave AMA after we bandage them up the first time is astounding. These are people who were transferred to our specialty unit because their burns are bad enough they will likely need skin grafts. Inevitably, they come back two or three days later with raging infections and losing way more tissue than they needed to.

The story that really stuck out to me, aside from the granny blowing up the hospital room was the girl with CF. When I was a kid I watched some documentary where this 14 year old who did beauty pageants--she was very pretty--had CF and died from in 1999 at 14. It's wild that in 1998 or so her prognosis was only to about 16 years of age and now about 20 years later, people can live until their 30s with it. Maybe longer as better treatments keep appearing.

My grandma fell and refused to see a doctor despite barely being able to walk. A few months later she fell again and still didn’t go to a doctor for nearly a week until we forced her too. She had a hip replacement and looked to be fine except for a little bit of a stomach ache. She didn’t tell the doctors about it. Well it turns out that “stomach ache” was a hemorrhage in her stomach that was making her slowly bleed to death internally. She died the next day

Honestly, can't begin to understand some of these cretins. After I had my wisdom teeth removed, was told by the doctor to avoid eating solid foods/drinking anything hot/harsh brushing for 2-3 days. Ended up eating only barely warm soup and mixed foods for over a *WEEK* in fear of complications, and especially a dry socket that runs in the family. Took more care of my mouth than every single doctor I knew recommended. Ended up healing so well I myself removed the stitches after just 6 days. Better safe than sorry, guys...

Honestly, medicine is a thankless job cos you're remembered for your failures more than your successes (every remembers murderous doctors but never ones who saved thousands). It's lucky you got out before you developed an addiction or mental problem from the stress.

My whole life has seemed to be a series of doctors hearing my symptoms/reading test results and looking confused and reading up on my problems. I even had a PCP tell me my neurologist was wrong because he had never herd of something before.

I’m the patient. I grew lax on dental care. I was told to start brushing my teeth better. I didn’t. I didn’t floss much ether. This led to Gingivitis. I continued to ignore orders from the dentist. Well, my Gingivitis has gotten to the point that it’s do or die time. Otherwise I’m looking at surgery. Brush your teeth regularly and floss. Gingivitis is painful.

Nevermind that, if your tooth had gotten infected you could've died from it. I remember one story, guy had a dodgy dental operation, damn near died as 2/3s of his skull bone was infected. You'd be surprised how common (and potentially fatal) dental based infections are!

How many people have died/almost died from lack of affordable Healthcare in the US, I cant even imagine. My mom didn't go to the hospital after having a stroke, it took me and her friend (a nurse) begging her for 12 hours because she knew we couldn't afford the medical bills. She works as an insurance biller in that hospital. She wasn't exaggerating, she knew exactly how much our insurance would cover and knew we didn't have the money. The US is pathetic

@@lauram3115 Judging by how you can charge patients on a sliding scale, I find it hard to believe that healthcare isn't a free market. Most doctors have to join existing corporations, sure, but you didn't. In case you're unaware, insurance companies are the source behind the unreasonable prices in the healthcare industry. Besides, healthcare shouldn't *be* an industry; no one should be able to over-monetize or price-gouge someone's access to insulin or chemo. By all means, keep helping people, but know that this pricing problem stems from insurance companies, not the supposed absence of a free market.

No longer in healthcare (I was an EMT), but I watched a guy (friend's husband) drink himself into cirrhosis of the liver (pickled it!!). Spent a long time in ICU until he recovered. He was told to knock off the drinking. Day after he was released, he put himself right back in the hospital. No idea what ever happened to him cuz I pretty much checked out of their drama after the friend left him.

That happened with my uncle. He was a drinker, eventually diagnosed with cancer (refused any treatment except the surgery to remove the tumor), and then drank... and drank.... and drank... and died. Even had a hospital stay or two from serious complications and diagnoses from it. I always figured if he wanted to die he should have just let the cancer do it, it would have been faster.

Recently my mother scared the shit out of us including the doctor. She went to ER complaining of kidney stones and wanted something for the pain but when they did labs boy was there a surprise. Her hemoglobin was at a 3 normal is minimum 7, they were amazed that she wasn’t complaining about being weak and tried because of it. Mom told them that she just figured that she was having a flare up of her Lupus. She was in a small town hospital and needed blood transfusion which normally wouldn’t be so bad but she had AB negative blood which is very rare. Sho almost died on me and I was panicking because she was out of town. She normally lives with us and due to all her many health issues we installed a camera with two way microphone so I can keep an eye on her. She has seizures among other issues so I worry a lot and being an only child I’m a bit more attached to her then normal, she not only my moms but other than my husband she my best friend. So needless to say I HATE it when she goes out of town on consulting jobs.

Meanwhile I had an accidental Tylenol overdose and suffered temporary damage to my liver that took like a year to fully recover from.... And I'm over here over 2yrs later not drinking, avoiding Tylenol and whatnot except when prescribed by a doctor or given to me by a nurse, etc...... I don't understand these people..... Edit to clarify: I was suffering from debilitating migraines at the time and my family doctor wasn't listening to me. I had even told her that I sometimes took what was probably dangerous amounts of Tylenol, ibuprofen, etc. to try and cope and she didn't even respond to it. When I was in that state I couldn't think clearly, so... Yea. And guess what. After I almost fucking DIED my doctor started listening to me about my migraines 🙄

I don't think I almost died, but I did spend over a year vomiting up almost everything I ate, and lost about 80 pounds before I finally sought medical help. Turns out my gallbladder had turned against me, and I had stones in my common bile duct, which that alone has had me in and out of surgery putting in and taking out stents; that's still going on months later. I ended up in the hospital in August last year when fluids started coming up too, and spent about a week there fighting bacteremia and being monitored before they were able to remove my gallbladder (which improved matters a LOT, though I do still vomit occasionally). Every doctor on my team, visiting me after the procedure, felt the need to tell me the removed organ was "really gross," full of and covered with stones, LOL. I regret not getting help a lot sooner...it's just that I'm autistic and unfamiliar places are really hard for me.

Not a medical professional. My father’s roommate in-hospital was there for knee replacement. Post-Op he’s fidgeting and couldn’t stand being in bed all day. Nearly drove my father up a wall. Well, that night this man couldn’t stand it any longer and decided he was going to go out. My father is woken up by a blood-curdling scream. Nurses rush in, no call needed, to my father’s roommate out of bed and trying to pull a pair of pants over his newly operated on knee, which lead to him falling onto his back on the floor. Totally screwed up the operation

He needed a smartphone (to not be bored and start doing stupid stuff) but he probably would've watched bad life hacks the whole time and then implemented them after leaving the hospital and ended up back at the hospital (there's some super dangerous lifehacks that Ann from How To Cook That debunked like a tutorial that can create an explosion, a toxic way to bleach strawberries and one with hot caramel that will fling all over the place. That iv drip story, had severe bacterial infection in my leg went from cellulitis to lymphoedema, I had 41 degree fever for 3 days ( because I was in army before I always toughen it out), 4th day went to my gp he goes why are you here go to icu right now. By then you can see my lymph vein becoming red and climbing to my lymph nodes, The icu doctor goes if you came even 1 or 2 days later you would have sepsis, and would likely loses you right leg or worst. Was on iv 24 hours antibiotics for 5 days and oral antibiotics at 3 times recommended dosage for 4 weeks. Now any pain that last more than 2 weeks I go see doctor and any fever over 39 for 1 day I go to emergency

It's not easy, but try to remind yourself that food is fuel and not feelings. Do you have anyone to talk to when you feel like stuffing yourself? For me it helps to talk and just cry so I won't feel like shoving my feelings down with food. It fills the void, even though it's easier to just eat.

My grandmother smoked by her oxygen tank, and caught her apartment on fire. Luckily nobody was hurt. She lived with me afterwards, I wouldn't let her smoke in my apartment, because I am a mother, and I like to live. She wouldn't listen to me, I had to put her in a nursing home. I live with so much regret because she died 8 months later.

I have a story from my 7th grade science teacher. His dad ate badly and smoked a lot. He got (I believe) 3 heart surgeries and was confident that his heart was now stronger, and was obese. Obviously he died by a heart related issue.

5:52 I had TB and when I tried sleeping I coughed so much and so LOUD I would keep the rest of my family awake. (I was 12/13 at the time) IDK why but my immune system is pretty strong, so I did not cough up blood or anything like that, it was just a really bad whooping cough. My grandmother used to just take a triple dose of insulin in the morning because according to her ,she couldn't be bothered to do that sh*t 3 times a day ,and taking it all once a day was smart 👍 she would then get faint and almost pas out. My Uncle was diagnosed with Diabetes. He never took care of it; never watched his blood sugar and never took his meds. When my Grandma would try to get him to eat properly he’d throw a fit. He ended up having two separate strokes and still refused to do anything. He let my Dad and Grandma watch as he essentially decayed in front of them. I’m still pissed at him for that.

Did some jury service for three days on a malpractice case for just this reason. Defense was startlingly weak, but persistent that the doctor didn't do what they were supposed to. We even couldn't sway another juror for a while who eventually came around at the end. The entire first day was just the defense proving they did exactly what they had set out to do, and had stacks of supporting documents. I still don't understand how people think they're going to win a court case this day and age with all of these admissable forms of evidence.

Well I'm the patient I ignored my neurologist not by choice but because we can't afford it. My doctor told my mom to move us (me, mom, and my brother) out of my grandmother's house because my grandmother is (to put it nicely) really really unpleasant to live with. When I was in high school, I took a vertebrate biology course where we would regularly dissect specimens. One of the first we did was a shark (to see the proto spine). It turns out that this shark’s last meal was shrimp. Guess who is deathly allergic to shellfish? I started breathing funny and getting progressively more tired as my friend repeatedly asked if he should go get my dad (he was a teacher). I said no. Finally I’m flat on the ground and barely conscious so he runs to go get him. We ended up going to urgent care after he administered an Epi. Weirdest part? I was wearing a mask and gloves because that was standard practice during labs. If you’ve ever heard of one sniff syndrome it is apparently a very real thing and weird as crap to experience.

My husband has asthma and didnt have an inhaler always saying it's been years he doesnt need it till we visited a family memeber who doesnt clean their house well and has dogs and he had an attack he was lucky I had one on me and told him 'you gonna one now?'

I few months ago i had a grand mal sezuire in the back of my moms car for an unknown reason, And when i woke up in the ICU i discharged against medical advice right away. So godamn stupid i dont even know why i did i just didnt want to be in the hospital and i was scared because i didnt know what was happening. Dont discharge AMA, you will just regret it shortly after.

Asthma is definitely the worst I had a really really bad as a kid to the point where killed part of my lung. And like right as I got in the senior year of high school at all just completely went away and I've only had like one slight attacks since then but with asthma you could have it anytime anyday all that matters is maybe it gets a little bit too cold it's not that humid out and boom you're dead. What really makes me sad is diabetics though cuz they're so addicted and I get it with drug addicts how they kill themselves with like heroin ship because there's an actual chemical reaction that causes them to seek that but with food you're literally just killing yourself. It's definitely a learned behavior but you can just stop eating like that. I have hyperthyroidism and Kaden so I will literally cannot feel hungry so I don't really know much about it
