Great video with some awesome questions and answers! What I've noticed about you guys in the states is the amount of woodwork and exterior cladding you have, which ultimately creates a lot of potential exterior painting jobs. Here in the UK its mostly brick/stone, therefore its mostly the render that gets painted.

As a residential painter, I am barely netting 10% as the highest in my market... I have got to get my costs of good sold under control... I think there are some pre-caution and prep items that I can forego to bring that delta down substantially. My pricing is about as high as it can get. We are consistently the highest price and my gross profit still struggles to be 40%.

I knew a guy that ran over 50 painting teams that contracted to his business. This guy has a similar set-up. The guts of their business is if the contracting team didn't do the job to his satisfaction, then he would send in another team to finish the job and the new team would get paid for the job. That was the deal, and it gave the business owner ZERO risk in that area of his business. Getting the full payment for the job was about the only real risk his business had. I hope this is still something that works in your area of the world. This story is from a business in Melbourne, Australia, back in the early 90's.
@ericlewis64044 ай бұрын
Can you share more on this?
@tioraytm4 ай бұрын
@@ericlewis6404 I don't remember much more. He had 3 people that did the quotes. Back in those days each suburb or couple of suburbs had it's own local newspaper that he advertised in. Home customers tended to be more reliable in paying compared to commercial customers. Back then almost all painters did an apprenticeship, I have no idea what were the qualifications of the guys he used. All I know is of all the teams it was a mixed bag of different sized and experienced guys. I do remember that the business would supply the paint but I don't know about the quality of the paint. I assume Delux paints were used as they are the industry standard in Australia but they may have also quoted on a cheaper brand as the customers were all domestic and some may have wanted a cheaper choice. I forget if the paints were delivered to site or the painting teams picked them up from the business but I think it was site delivered. Melbourne is the geographical size of LA so it's a huge area. The guy ran the business from his home. I think he also had an office worker/s but I don't remember clearly. That's about it. Hope some of that info helps.

The most important aspect of the painting business here is that AI won't touch it. So this one will be well established when faecal matter hits the fan very soon. I'm in the linguistics business and this year alone 80% of translators have been fired because of AI.

Great video. Hiring independent contractors has more cons than pros in my opinion. When it comes to contractors you have limited amount of control which might affect the quality of the work. Also there is no incentive to the best job possible. A big pro is saving money on payroll taxes, this factors into healthy profit margins.
@UpFlip5 ай бұрын
Great points! Balancing control and cost is key when deciding between hiring independent contractors or employees. Thanks for the insights! 🙌

From my experience the 1 pro that makes it worth it is they are motivated to get the job done. An employee doesn't get paid more the faster he/she works. Also he said there was an incentive for 5 star reviews which great advice I had not heard of before.

When the opportunity cost of getting in to a business is so low, wouldn't there be more competition? I guess it's the word of mouth and the ratings that help. Also this business is catered more towards the rich because the middle and lower class would probably paint their own house/apartments
@Fortunatefinishes5 ай бұрын
Very very wrong. Dollar for dollar, painting gives you the most return on your money for any home remodel budget. That option makes more people available for all price ranges. The middle class pays very well actually.
@allenhong84344 ай бұрын
If competition is low you would likely just tell yourself “theres not a lot of people doing it so theres probably no money in it”. If there’s money, there will always be competition. Dont be afraid of it

I’ve painted since the 90’s. When cash work was common. These days, getting a cash painting job is much more difficult. People want tax ID. They don’t want to pay cash so often. When you’re not a business some owners try to get your SS number to claim you as an employee and take taxes. It’s just not worth the hassle. Prior referrals don’t make much different. They don’t care how good you are. People want to be involved with a business even if it costs triple the price. But when doing it as a business you need to figure out how to do all the paperwork and keep records. It becomes too much for a person that just wants to do a service, get paid, move on.

It's true. Business isn't for everyone. I'm in my 3rd year of my pressure washing business and I'm making more money than ever but I'm kind of miserable. No free time. The stress with the responsibilities you mentioned. Realizing that if I want to delegate stuff out that means hiring people which is even more stressful. I've had to think about if business is really for me now that I know what I'm getting into. I could take a pay cut and work for someone else and be happier I think. However, I'm going to stick with it. I didn't build this over 3 years to quit now. It's just that next step is SO hard and SO much work. Money doesn't motivate me to put in that work. I like free time. So, I've got to think of something to motivate me.
@Cooliofoolio1895 ай бұрын
@@chuckgood3972 did you pay for insurance and bond and all that?
@AndyNC4 ай бұрын
Being good in what you are doing and running a business are two different things. It might be a hassle with all the paperwork, but in the end you can make more money with it on the long run then just day by day cash jobs. People want insurance and liability because a lot of cash workers come to take the initial payment and never come back. Or they mess up your house with no insurance. Do it the right way. It will pay you way more than searching for cash jobs.
@roddymoore994 ай бұрын
That's why they keep "hiring" illegals....to pass on the liability keeping the profit. I'll challenge anyone to open their books. Talking is cheap, even a parrot can do it.

$ 20 000 for this job ? Hard to believe .... 3:44 I work as a painter in Vancouver for almost 30 years, we charge for home like this no more that $ 9 000. We provide labor and material, Superpaint.
@Brandongriffin19804 ай бұрын
Thanks for your feedback! Pricing can vary for each project depending on how each business calculates their labor and material costs. It’s hard to understand an exact price without knowing the scope of work and measuring and building an estimate. We price our jobs using production rates to be accurate for our clients and our team. This helps to avoid surprise costs once the job is in progress. This project included the main home, a guest home, decks and the inside screened porch. There was a lot of prep work, drastic color changes and multiple coats of Sherwin Williams Duration and Emerald to get the price.
