Thanks for the tip! Storage is never usually an issue with these netbooks though, it's always about how much ram they eat up because the web browser will use a lot!
@skraegorn7317

@@ImLeeLoi That’s true. However this distro gets around that by not only using lightweight programs but it also runs entirely from RAM. So that means it’s not gonna eat up nearly as much RAM as something even as light as Linux Mint. If you want to know more, check out Explaining Computers’ video “Linux for Old Laptops”.

Signing into Windows 10 with a Microsoft/Live account is *not* mandatory. When setting up Windows 10, instead of connecting to the internet, instead choose "I don't have internet". It will then allow you to create a local user account.

Just a heads up, I recently got two of these intel Atom Netbooks. An MSI U135DX with an Atom N455 (1C,2T) and an Asus Eee 1015PX with Atom N570 (2C,4T). They are infact 64 bit processors... and of all things to run incredibly well on them, Windows 8.1 (albeit with some bloat removed) actually won it for me. And yes, Neverware Cloudready's 64bit OS does work on them.

Someone want me to fix & clean an old notebook an Aspire one d255e with intel atom N455 (1.66ghz, 512kb cache)(yes, it has 64-bit instruction set i can confirm that because I've searched it on intels website), Ram is shit it's 1gb ddr3 but i will upgrade it to 2gb if needed sadly it is on a single channel(that's the maximum ram supported of this cpu), storage is a 250 hdd but i will upgrade it to 60gb ssd if needed. I was wondering, what is the optimal OS that i can install? I have been researching for about 4 hours now, i want to end this journey. If possible my preference that it can run android apps(PlayStore too), wifi connection isn't unstable, office essential like zoom, msgr, Microsoft offices, KZbin too. I'm planning to give it to my cousin for online classes if the client is planning to give me the notebook if i ever fix it. In perspective x86 android, Chrome OS would be good but I'm open for suggestions please help me if want or can.

Thanks for this, my old mini is an Asus T102 "transformer" running a Atom X5-Z8350 with 4GB ram. It has Windows 10 and runs - well walks as it is slow. I'm thinking of loading Linux and hope to get it to boot from the SD card or plug in USB. Primary purpose will be to run "G-Code Sender" a program to run my CNC machine. As a device to operate another device it may have a purpose for some years (hopefully past the end date for Windows 10 - but it can be disconnected from the internet and just used as a controlling device. Considered getting another Pie, have one for my 3D printer, but Pies are hard to come by. And I already have this unit collecting dust. Been two years since you did this video - any changes I should know? I have googled up Linux on this particular unit. Seem screen rotation and sound are common issues.
@ImLeeLoi
@ImLeeLoi Жыл бұрын
I would make sure that Linux can work your CNC machine. I do believe Linux Mint stopped supporting 32 bit shortly after I made this video unfortunately - like I jinxed it so you'd have to run the last version that supports 32 bit. Your best bet could likely be crawling it on Windows 10. 4GB should really help you out though on Linux!
@DavidBealeakaFKD
@DavidBealeakaFKD Жыл бұрын
@@ImLeeLoi Thanks - "G-Code Sender" which is all I need to run on the computer attached to the CNC does come in Linux. I believe you are right though, I could strip down all unnecessary apps and programs and after Win10 end of life continue to use it off line, any updates would be done via USB rather than direct download. Make it a single purpose computer. I think ASUS bloats up the system a lot, most of it would be turned off, then uninstalled if not needed. I do see concerns about screen rotation issues converting this unit - and sound which is a mute point for this use - pardon the pun.

Hey, when you said that neverware stoped support for 32 bit processors in their os, it actually turns out you can install the 64 bit version of cloudready on a 32 bit processor. And it actually works pretty well... after installing the os drivers from the settings. I did that on my gateway netbook, and it works pretty good. And if you swap in a SATA SSD, (mainly SATA 1 and if the netbook supports SATA 1) it will run a whole lot faster. Would you mind taking it into consideration? I would recommend getting a Crucial SSD, (BX500 or MX500). It will make a big difference.

Destin Glenn Hey! So that’s great to hear, when I tried it at the time of recording this video it just didn’t work on this system. Maybe they changed some functionality since? The upgrades are a great idea - I wanted to make a follow up video I was actually going to put an SSD in and DIY change the color of the netbook however unfortunately the battery latch on it appears to be jammed so I’m still working on getting in there. Obviously I’m not going to prod at it with a knife because... it’s a battery so that’s been a real work in progress LOL. But yeah SSD’s are always great upgrades but the purpose of this video was for people stuck in quarantine at the time who were probably cleaning their homes out and finding old Tech and showing them cool ways to repurpose them without having to buy anything which is why Linux Mint turned out great - even on an SD card which many people would have lying around.

I'm kicking myself for selling my Acer netbook. I really would love one right now. I went on vacation last year and bravely rode a roller coaster with a loop for the first time. In preparation I bought an action camera but it did not have a screen. Got home and found I did not get any of the footage. :( I have an iPad but travel with a Fire 7 tablet so I can keep the more expensive equipment at home. The Fire 7 does not have a USB port or file area (to my knowledge) to be able to preview action cam vids. So the need for a simple netbook is exactly what I need. I am glad I viewed your video to know XP is an unsafe OS now. So I am now in search of a >$100 netbook or tablet with USB port and file browsing capabilities and would be comfortable with Windows OS. I see the 32 gave you a bit of trouble and wonder if I could get a 64 type for the same budget. I miss the ultraportability of netbooks and the amazing price. I am looking for suggestions for a netbook that may have been one of the later models that would serve me well. I am not well versed in computer alterations to make the system faster. I am not looking to edit video, just assure myself that it did in fact record and have the ability to either post to Facebook or email to my inbox. Any advice and suggestions are welcome.

Hmm.. 64 bit would require even more ram. You may have to look at a modern day Chromebook. The netbook featured is 10 inches and a Chromebook is typically 11.6" but their bezels are usually much smaller making the difference up. Or maybe something like a Lenovo Duet tablet as that has USB to check your action cam footage. :)

Hey. I have an Operating system you might like! This is a Linux based operating system though. You can install the 64 bit version of two light distros. There’s Xubuntu, a light version of Ubuntu using the LXDE environment, or You can install Lubuntu, a more lighter version of Xubuntu, but be ready for some occasional Lock Screen flickering on Lubuntu with the more recent versions. You can install the older 18.04 version of Lubuntu, but that’s the last supported 32 bit version of the system. Let me know which one you prefer, personally, I would recommend Xubuntu. It will work better and you won’t get weird Lock Screen flickering on that OS. So please let me know! I like your videos!

Hi Change name! I wouldn't recommend installing Linux with a Virtual Machine inside Windows Vista - this will be terribly slow. You have a decent amount of ram so you could try Windows 10 for free and see how your milage may vary. The proper way to Install Linux Mint is to delete all of Windows Vista and replace it with Mint. To do so you need to put Mint on a USB thumb drive, turn the computer off and on and as it first starts, boot off the USB thumb drive. When your computer turns on pay attention to what it first says regarding what things like F2, F8, F10 or F12 do. One of these keys when you first turn the Laptop on will allow you to select what to boot from. If this is your main Laptop please backup all your files first. This video assumes you're performing it on a spare Laptop you already own but if it's your daily driver, consider getting assistance before performing this upgrade. One thing for sure: Linux Mint should be much speedier than Windows Vista of all things! :)

With 4GB of ram and a dual core processor definitely give Windows 10 a try; if you really want Linux try Ubuntu as Zoom makes an official version for that platform on your Specs should be enough to run the main distribution, I don't think you need a special light weight version. The bottleneck I see is the old HDD, have you considered opening it up and popping in a $20 SSD?

Windows 8 is another very good alternative for Netbooks. I wouldnt install Windows Vista or 7 on a Netbook as they run very slow at basic tasks. Windows 8 however boots up in 29 seconds on my Inspiron mini 1012 with a N450 Atom Processor and 2 GB of RAM. Windows 7 takes more than 70 seconds to boot and Vista 66 seconds. Apart from that, it is way faster than Windows 10 and loads items quicker

I'm glad you got Windows 8 working on your Netbook, from what I'm aware that requires a minimum 1024x768 otherwise the whole OS wouldn't fit. I suppose though it's trying to determine the selling point of putting Windows 8 on the Netbook, you'll have to buy a license and if it's for speed, Linux performed the quickest. :)

On Windows Vista I got an Experience Index of 3,2 , on Windows 7 it was only 2,3 but Windows 8 gave me 4,0 ! Thats damn good for a Netbook from 2009/2010

I already got installed windows 10 and activated. It is working fine with my hp mini 1115nr netbook except for the triple low speed and horrible video streaming... Can I just install Linux Mint 19.3 XCFE edition or 20XCFE? I checked the linux website there isn't any 32bit version. I guess I just need to install 64 bit version. Is there anyway I can get the package that is already ready to install linux?
@ImLeeLoi
@ImLeeLoi 3 жыл бұрын
Linux Mint has an archive where you can download an older version for 32 bit like Mint 19. Use Balena Etcher to put it on a USB stick you can put inside your Netbook. I recommend installing it to an SD card if your HP Mini has one. That will allow you to keep Windows 10 on the Hard drive and Install Linux separately so you can experiment.

@@johnnymari So I really wanted to do a 2nd video with an in-depth installation video but the Netbook actually died while I was trying to do that DIY video I teased at the end so I never got around to doing that. I'll look into acquiring a 2nd netbook as this video seems to be quite popular. Where exactly are You having the issues? Did you successfully use BalenaEtcher and put Linux Mint onto the USB thumb drive. If so you you need to press F2, F8, F10, F12 when your Netbook turns on. The key changes depending on the model so try with all of them. This will bring up system settings (BIOS) and in there you can set the order of Boot preference and making sure it's set to USB before hard drive. This means when the Computer turns on it will boot off the USB before Windows off the hard drive.
