Upgrade Your Writing Experience: Machine-Era + Markup Pens (2-Month Review)

The standard and Markup versions of the Machine Era pens have been fantastic companions to my Rocketbook notebooks. Both fit the standard Pilot G2 (FriXion) refills but provide a much more premium feel than standard Pilot pens. If you're looking to upgrade your writing experience, Machine Era is not a bad place to start.

I wish that the ink supply in the Frixion pens would last a little longer. I love them, and I also gave up on them because it seemed like I was incessantly changing the refills.

I have found that it’s easier to post the cap if I do these things: 1. Hold cap in my left (non-dominant) hand. 2) Hold pen in my right (dominant) hand. 3. Twist the pen *into* the cap. Twisting the *pen into the cap* is a smoother experience than trying to twist the *cap onto the pen.* Would you be willing to try that and comment on the difference?

Wonderful review! For the Original pen, has anyone put O-rings in the grooves? I did that for my Hinderer Extreme Pen and would love to do the same for my Original. Just ca't find the correct O-ring or rubber band. Any suggestions?

Nice review. I like the looks of the pens but not sure if enjoy threading the cap on every time to both the top and bottom of the pen. Did you find any nice professional pens that were a more traditional push on cap?

That is something you would have to get used to. They aren't the fastest to whip out if you need to in a pinch. I just received my Tactile Turn click and bolt action pens that also take Pilot refills. They are similar to a more traditional pen, but far more expensive. I hope to do a full review in the future 👍

Pens are about as personal preference as it comes, so that is a tough topic, thanks for all the information you provided. As someone who used the standard plastic Pilot G2 on loose paper, before switching to Rocketbook, the LX has been a nice upgrade, over the plastic body on both the FriXion and G2. While I am guessing I would like the DLC finish ( I have a watch with a similar finish ), the weight would likely be way more than I like. I still use the plastic ones for occasional color highlights, and they seem really light now. I can't imagine how that would feel to you after that full weight brass body pen.

Definitely subjective on the weight. Personally, I really like it, but my partner prefers a light pens, so she sticks with the standard FriXion bodies. The LX is a happy medium, and still one that I recommend often. But solid metal pens will definitely take more of a beating (my LX has a dent - don't know how that happened) as long as you are OK with the weight. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
