In 1980 my first car was a 1970 duster with a slant 6. I had a 340 ready to swap in it when the car was destroyed by a Mercedes S running a red light. I put the Duster completely out of my mind when I found my second car, a Boss 302 Mustang. Fast forwarding to now I found a completely rust free original condition 70 Duster with a worn out 318 and it has a Dana posi rear end. Thanks to power Nation I know exactly what motor I will be putting in. I planned to squeeze in a big block 440 but no need when this 410 will fit great and make basically the same power and be 150 pounds lighter. With this much torque I will have to seriously strengthen the frame, but that's a great problem to have. It's going to be a very stock looking sleeper with electric exhaust cutouts and Coker OEM looking '70s rally style Mopar rims but taller and 2 in wider. It will also be getting a third pedal and a 5 speed but don't tell anyone. Love this channel.

Good build, shows what a 410 Mopar will do with good heads. But one thing to remember that they left out, the Trick Flow heads use the LA intake and valve covers, not the Magnum. Also, they use a dedicated Harland Sharp roller rocker set up at $1000. The key to power in any engine is good flowing cylinder heads.
@JT-ko3rv
@JT-ko3rv 2 жыл бұрын
You can use stock rockers if you wish as long as your block has the rocker shaft oiling holes drilled. If it's a later magnum block without the rocker oiling passages drilled you just need to make sure your lifters, pushrods and rockers will oil through the pushrods there's more than a few rocker setups that will work.
@GsxrforlifeK5
@GsxrforlifeK5 9 күн бұрын
They stated when assembling the engine that the cylinder heads were drilled to run both LA and Magnum style intakes. You can also run LA valve covers on magnum cylinder heads with no issues.

I could never afford those Trick Flow heads or aftermarket roller cam. Good to know that the factory setup with a 408-410 ci stroker kit can make nearly 500 lb-ft. That's where I'd put MY money; a low buck stroker kit with cast crank, SRP rods, and hypereutectic pistons. Perfect truck engine.

For oval racing the stock bore 360 was our backup motor in place of a 0.020 over stroked 340, (355cid). We normally ran 36* timing. This was on a 3/8 mile banked paved oval. The worst thing about the 360 was the torque, it would actually spin the rears coming out of the corner, where the 355 would drive out clean.
@rogerfox9028

H ow was the 318?
@edwardmullen1581
@edwardmullen1581 2 жыл бұрын
@@rogerfox9028 The 318 was a great street motor, but never intended for track racing. The 360 was developed as the small block truck motor. The 340 was designed by Chrysler intended for racing use in the Trans Am series, to compete against GM 350 and Ford 351's. For stockcar racing where the displacement limitation was 355cu, MOPAR developed their stroker kit with a bore increase to run at the 355 limit. The 360 being a truck motor was built as a torque monster that would spin the tires too easily. The 340 bored and stroked, 355, had the torque come in higher in the rev band and revved higher, giving it a power band better suited for oval and road racing.

I have turned my stock rods and crank, forged piston, stock heads and valve springs up to 8200 rpm, no problems. Been running 33 years, two trucks, two Ram Chargers and now in a CJ5. I would have no problems turning that stroker 7000 rpm and if you look at the graph the hp was still climbing so who knows what the peak hp would have been had they done so. As long as your engine is under load you should be safe, one reason why I never power shift at full throttle, always lift slightly when shifting, beats blowing an engine.

Very Exciting Numbers! I think the 360 is one of the most underrated Mopar mills out there. Most folks don't know its a stretched 340, essentially with the 340's best attributes, LA or Magnum version.. Had the'73 oil embargo not hit when the 360 was fresh, it think it would have developed past the 340 in ability and popularity. 360 3 pack yea baby! What fuel octane and blend are you running with over 11:1 compression? I did hear that right, over 11:1 compression ratio, correct? Why is the distributor locked out, won't that kill its street manners, especially with a computer controlled dizzy and a tune? How about fuel injection vs. carb? This combo really has my curiosity piqued,.. I would like to build something just like it for a 1998 AWD 5.9 Magnum Limited Grand Cherokee, which I just so happen to have at the moment. Perfect power numbers to get it moving like the newer non-supercharged Hemi Jeep and Durango! Be able to whoop up on them on Friday nights at Lincoln!

The 318 and 360 were always hampered by their very tame heads and weak cam. Especially the 318. These motors come alive with a cam, heads and headers. The Magnums in the trucks suffered with that big goofy beer keg manifold. They make good torque with those, but if you want higher end hustle, those things gotta go. There is a guy here on KZbin who wanted to keep the very nice port injection setup, so he grabbed a good air gap dual plane manifold and machined in some bungs to hold the factory injectors. The factory throttle body on these is capable of more than 700cfm, but there's room for improvement with some porting and thinning things out, or buying a Hughes Big Gulp and TB to 4-bbl adapter plate. and best of all is that it will likely pass smog checks because you left the factory emissions controls in place, assuming you don't go crazy with the cam. Comparing the initial dyno to the final just shows how much these Mopars are being choked out by factory components. You can see that cam pull hard all the way up, right until it runs out of beans a little over 5k RPM. The heads look like they'd support even more cam if you didn't mind a lumpy idle. Probably an easy 600hp in them with the right cam.

those are good numbers my 360 stroker only made 530hp 560tq just don't have the intake or heads to make real power got worse with a victor intake compared to a ported air-gap , next time i go big block

I'd love to see this engine or any other fully-built engine etup with EFI and an aftermarket induction system that has been ported, polished, & port-matched by an expert. I'd like to see not only what the engine is truly capable of, but also whether there is any point in doing all the handwork involved in a porting, polishing, & port-matching job anymore with the really good aftermarket we have now! Is there room to improve a set of Trick Flow heads? Or Air Flow Research? Or Edelbrock, etc....

considering the power-to-weight ratio of an aluminum headed small block....their big block cousins need to be making serious suds to be worth investing in these days. I'm watching UTG build an iron head tunnel ram 383 B unit and if they only match this number, the weight of that choice will make for a slower car than a stroker 360.

Most people don't realise what torque monsters the 360 is. I believe only the 440 has a longer stroke of any mopar engine. They have huge potential!

Displacement increases torque. 1.33 ft*lbs/CID is a good target to shoot for then cam and tune for the HP you want. or add boost, boost makes everything better.

When is the last time that fancy torque wrench went out for calibration at a Metrology lab? I did not observe any cal stickers. It is important ! Depending on usage it should be done periodically if you want the numbers to equal what is .

One thing that has always puzzled me about Mopar. The Hemi was created out of a need for airflow. So how come they didn't build on that across their entire range of engines in the following decades?
@cutlets6152
@cutlets6152 2 жыл бұрын
the hemi was established to compete in Nascar. Those engines lived in the upper rpm ranges and not very streetable. Same thing happened when they put the hemis into their street cars. They were dogs. Same as the Boss 429. More air flow requires more fuel and that became a big no-no in the early 70's.

@@cutlets6152 Only the 426 that was for NASCAR. The very first Hemi was built for the Military but WWII ended so the Engineers developed it for their passenger cars. It wasn't called a Hemi but a Firepower. Displacement was as small as 241. The 392 became THE Engine for NHRA almost by accident. The "Hemi" for NASCAR came about in 1964 but was unable to run the '65 season because of Ford's 3utthurt and it's unavailablity to the public. They were getting their proverbial @$$ handed to them with the 426 Wedge.

The hemi head was way way too expensive to manufacture. Gas was cheap so building bigger engines with cheap wedge heads just made economic sense.

Great build!! I'm questioning the stock dyno run.....I had a '99 Ram with the 5.9, and my son currently has a 2000 Durango with the 5.9, and it's not putting out anywhere near 300/400 at the crank. They were rated at 245/345 or so, if I remember right. Regardless, great build......would love to see one of these builds using the factory, just to see what can be done to a stock daily driver.

their dyno run was definitely gross power, no accessories and an electric waterpump, so no power losses...also had an RPM air gap intake and dyno headers IIRC instead of the stock "beer keg" EFI manifold and exhaust manifolds....

I still think it was climbing after they tuned it. I think he should have made a pull from 2300 to 6300 just to see where it peaked. I think it had another 2 to 3 numbers, and torque peaked at 4,000. So if it carried to 6200 or 6300 that spread would have been at or over 2000rpm. This is a great little engine. I would have liked to have seen what number it would have made on some good E85
