Budget instruments are usually fantastic modification platforms - they have a lot of untapped potential waiting to be teased out and if you mess it up then at least you didn't ruin an expensive guitar.
This Glarry Thinline Tele has a few issues that need fixed, so I took that as an opportunity to upgrade the whole thing.

I am the only musician in my immediate and extended family. At least for guitar. My aunt plays the accordion on Christmas and knows a few Christmas songs, but that’s it. My nephew became interested in guitar and he’s 13, so I wanted to foster that spark of guitar and bought him his first rig. A Blackstar amp and a Glarry Strat copy. And a Line 6 effect board. The guitar came in and it was truly horrible. The action was half an inch off the board, the pickups sounded bad, the tuners would creak when you turned them and the nut was unplayable. So I threw in a set of Fender TexMex single coils, Fender locking tuners, got the action super low with light gauge strings and sanded the back of the neck to remove all that goop that made your hand stick. And a Graphtech nut finished off the setup. I had made a really nice guitar and had second thoughts about giving it to him! Lol I did but with the caveat he must return it to me if he decided not to continue with the guitar. That was six months ago and he is not only sticking with it, he’s becoming very good. It’s very rewarding to see a cheap ass guitar transformed into a real player. That $200 + $175 in upgrades was so money well spent

Love it! I took a squire telecaster, cause the neck fit my hand really well and it was super cheap, and then dropped way too much money in upgrading it cause I wanted a project early in the pandemic. Fully adjustable babicz bridge, Seymour Duncan single coil sized humbuckers, all the electronics, locking tuners. Wasn't expecting it but honestly it's currently my favorite guitar I've ever had. And I've had much "nicer" guitars before.

If you have the parts, I strongly recommend a "half-out-of-phase" mod to the instrument. This involves a phase-reverse (typically the neck pickup), BUT with a bass-cutting cap in series with the neck pickup. With the bass content of the neck pickup reduced, you don't end up with the traditional nasal skronk and big volume drop. It yields a perfectly usable N+B sound that is audibly different than both pickups in phase, without ANY volume drop. Historically, it was used on the Jerry Donahue Tele to produce a Strat-like "cluck" but using only the two existing pickups without a 3rd middle pickup. I've done it on two guitars: one using SC pickups, and the other with a pair of Schaller HBs. Clearly, one can't get "cluck" from a pair of humbuckers, but the additional sound is *very* usable and sounds different. You can do it with a push-pull Tone pot. Just wire the phase switch so that in-phase connects the neck pickup directly to the selector, and phase-flip connects it to the pickup selector through a cap. Something in the 10-100nf range should be good. You can experiment from there. The bass cut doesn't have to rob the neck of its guts, but it *will* sound a little more like a "normal" Tele single coil than a HB if you're only using the neck pickup. Try it. Once you have it, I think you'll be as much of an evangelist for it as I am. Although I have to say the existing N+B tone on the instrument is VERY nice.

I’m a fan personally of the Bill Lawrence wiring mod, which uses a 5-way switch in Telecaster style instruments. It basically is the mod you just described. Every two pickup guitar with a blade switch that I own I wanna change to this. It’s that amazing. And the added neck pickup tone in position 5 is really cool, seldom do I use the regular tone, actually.

@@dicecard921 I posted a carefully-crafted description of how to do it, but somehow the post never "stuck". I'll try again. Here's the diagram: https: / / i.imgur.com/ARFZqUK.gif Make sure to omit the initial spaces in the URL, and make sure that whatever serves as your "black" wire in the neck pickup is isolated from the cover and baseplate. Feel free to experiment with cap values to strike a balance between too much and too little bass-cut. Higher values let more bass through, and smaller ones cut more bass. A nod of appreciation to Lindy Fralin, whose web-site provided the basic diagram that I liberally edited for this purpose.

Colin, Thanks to you, I bought the Glary featured in this video. No mods. Even though I own 2 other more expensive electric guitars, I am fond of my red Glary. I purchased it used in a Chicago guitar store with a professional setup. $70 U.S.dollars. For a beginner, senior citizen, with moderate hearing loss, the Glary is fun. It's light at just under 6 pounds. As it's semi-hollow it resonates well enough to grab off the sofa and play it for a while. No amp needed even though I own amps. It quietly plays. Amped up, it has a gravelly, throaty sound I can't describe. But I like that sound. Light, pretty, fun sounds, easy to play neck, it's always handy reclining on my man cave sofa. Maybe one day I'll learn how to mod it. Thanks for the great videos.

On occasion, I've been mistaken for being a guitar expert, despite what I say to the contrary, and get barraged with questions about what first guitar they should get for themselves or a loved one. The Look on the faces when I tell them to just get a Starter/Value pack and pay to have the guitar set up professionally is a little funny. But seriously, a good setup makes even the cheap axes sound pretty good. :)

Curiously now that you're older (I'm 55 so I have more time behind me than in front of me) it seems to me that you are no longer as much of a metal guy as you used to be and I say this because I watch your vids and see you with guitars and amps that could be more oriented toward Rock and Blues-Rock than Metal, but I could be wrong. The heat gun is a great idea. I will try a hairdryer next time. I have a rubber mallet that I use on the edge of the nut. Prying these out with a knife or pliers tends to make them break in two pieces. That's been my experience. Hopefully the wood doesn't take too much of a blow when I aim for the corner of the top of the nut on the bass side where it usually sticks up more preominently.

My suggestion for the pickguard: order some black vynil wrap. Step 1. Cut out an oversized shape of the original pickguard. Step 2. Clean the original pickguard really well. Step 3. Apply the wrap over pickguard. Start by wrapping the edge furthest away from you and slowly come towards yourself. Use a flat, non-abrasive edge (like a thick card) to lay and smooth out the wrap as you lay it down towards yourself. Don’t place it all all at once! Use the card as the application tool while you hold the unwrapped sections up until you lay it down completely. Step 4. Use an Exacto knife to cut off any excess, around holes, cutouts, and edges. Boom! There you go! 😊

Looks great, sounds better. I have my eye right now on a second hand LTD EC10 in red for $100AUD. Pretty decent on it's own - but I'm considering locking tuners, better nut and maybe a GFS quick-connect wiring kit so I can use it to mess around with different pickups. Maybe P90-ish neck, hotter HB in bridge or dual P90's etc. Maybe try out their lipstick pickups and filtertron equivalents. Plus I'll likely paint it if I end up getting it. I've done more custom paint than I have performance mods on guitars.

Upgrading an inexpensive guitar for one's personal playing satisfaction is a satisfying endeavor... however, realize that adding improvements to a originally inexpensive guitar (Say a $200 USD with $400 USD improvements ) doe snot increase the intrinsic value of the guitar very much... perhaps your original $200 guitar might now be worth "$300 USD" if you attempt to sell it...

Is it ok to sand down the fret side of a maple neck? A Fender Strat Ultra to be exact. Can not seem to find someone who has done so and I do not know enough about necks to just go for it. A little too expensive to mess up and replace. It is "sticky" to me, and I feel sanding it may help to make it not as sticky. Kind of like the back side of the neck. You sand it down to get a smoother feel. Thanks!

What is the black bar that you have behind the nut of the guitar?

Looks like it's gonna be a bit neck/head heavy with those tuners and an already lightweight body. What is that anyway, basswood?

Why not use a Dremel and sanding/polish wheels for the fret ends? Got that from Guns’N Guitars and I’ve been doing it that way on some of my projects

That seems like a vastly over engineered solution to a very simple problem.

Love your videos man also really love your accent. I also had this same exact guitar but like a dummy I sold it because I needed money now I've been kicking myself in the butt ever since I guess I'll have to get another one. I'm one of the few that actually likes g l a r r y guitars.

Interestingly I bought the exact same model and color of this Glarry guitar for around $80, and totally frankensteined it. Bolted on a roasted maple neck I bought on Reverb, installed locking tuners, carved my own bone nut, swapped the stock bridge for a Wilkinson 3-saddle bridge, installed a better bridge pickup and a P-90 in the neck. It plays super nice and has a versatile range of tones. Total investment around $250, punches way above its weight!

Theres actually a third modification. A "tactile" modification. Improving the feel of something.

Colin, next time you need an ad read in a southern accent, just mail me the script and I can handle it for you lol. It was pretty convincing at points though!

I feel alone on this, but the bridge w 6 brass saddles is what i would want. I dont like the 3 brass saddle ones, i feel like i cant get the guitar intonated perfectly. Its always off a hair and i have hearing loss thats made it difficult to put up with a guitar with intonation issues. But hey that may just be me. But i liked that one with the 6 brass you showed, i think im gonna buy one like that. Thanks :-) and Thanks for the videos :-)
