Upgrading a budget keyboard to THOCK

Today we take on the journey of upgrading a barebones GK61, a very popular beginner mechanical keyboard to achieve the greatest amount of THOCK for under $50 total dollars. All of you asked for this, do not blame me for the overuse of the word thocc in this video.

I think we are at the point where as long as you got SA keycaps, tape mod, and some PE foam or noico, your board will sound at least half decent regardless of the price. Mod the stabs, or even better, upgrade them if possible, and you're set. It's insane how affordable this hobby had become.

@@selectiveamnesia1033 tbh I've heard some that arent too bad. But that board isnt meant for people looking for perfect sound signature. I think it's more meant for people just starting who want an easy experience in terms of purchasing everything you need in one spot. That being said, there are some mods that will make it sound much better. unfortunately it seems to nerf the sound of any switch you put into it. Most GMMK pro's sound the same.

Yeah, no problem at all. I can't wait for you to post a link of a SA keycap set with ISO DE layout so I can enjoy it, too ;) But I guess you're right as long as you go with standard ANSI.

The prebuilt name brand boards cost as much as customs at 1/20th of the quality. I can think of no justification for their price.

I am so happy there are good affordable options out there. I have the 65% version of this. Modded a bit with foam, lubed switches, stabs and new keycaps that were all on the budget side. Bought it last year and I have no plans to upgrade anytime soon.

@@3lea.stratoTbh i'm pretty blown away by these. The gateron cap v1 sounded and felt pretty bad but these are a massive improvement. Using mine STOCK factory lube spring swapped to 58g 2 stage springs from kinetic labs lubed with 105g0 on my PC Maja with FR4 plate and DCS sleeper caps. Pretty deep sound signature and don't feel like I need to lube them. Using the Milky variant.

I got one of these (an RK68 but essentially the same thing) for my first board after a long hiatus from the hobby, and for the price you really just cant beat it if you plan to mod. Nicer switches, keycaps and a bit of work on the case and stabs goes a looooong way with such a basic barebones board

There are multiple sound signatures for a keyboard. Thock, Thocc (thicc thock), Thack (thock on bottom out, clack on top out), Thacc (thock on bottom out, clack on top out but THICC), Clack, Clacc (thicc clack) Clock (clack on bottom out, thack on top out) and Clacc (clack on bottom out, thack on top out but THICC)

If those are the keycaps I think they are, they also have a really terrible profile between rows. They have a similar top angle to SA caps, but on actual SA, the edges line up, but on these caps, the middle row is too tall to match up. instead of \_/, they're more like \-/. The ones I got had some garbage stems that were missing pieces too.
