I'm amazed the fan and housing is spotless, I've worked on exhaust fans but never old were so clean. That Broan design has been around since the 1970s and you can even cannibalize parts from new models to old, worse case, such as just swapping the fan assemblies. Those exhausts are old designs and fans, reliable, will last you forever if clean, as yours are. The only time they die is if dirt gets in there and the owner doesn't clean it out before the motor burns, deforms the rotor, or heat build up deform the fan blades; if it starts making noises you've never heard before that's the time to clean it; once in 10-15 years is all you need. Cheers, mine are original builders too, installed in 1984. In the Southern US, they don't last long due to humidity, so they rust out, so being able to replace them quickly like a light bulb, is a plus.

Great video! I've been procrastinating replacing the bathroom vents in my house. They are both original to the house from 1996. Both work fine, but as you can imagine, they don't move much air. After a good hot shower, with the fan running for the duration of the shower, it's about as steamy as it would be without the fan. This kit seems like a neat idea, but I don't think I'd have a problem upgrading to a larger fan that could hopefully move some air!

Also check the air flow to the outside. Hose could be plugged with bird nests. But yes a new fan is helpful regardless.

Hey Greg, thanks for sharing this very informative video. Couple of days ago I replaced my bathroom fan with the same brand as yours. After putting it in, I noticed that its rotating counter clockwise. I thought something’s wrong with the fan. Then it occurred to me that I might have connected hot/neutral wires the opposite way but while watching your video I noticed your both fans run counter clockwise. So, my headache is gone now. Thanks again!

When i built our house I intentionally put 2 of these loud fans in two bathrooms to help cover the "sounds" that might occur in them - 4 other bathrooms have nicer, bigger more efficient ECM fan units in them.

It may be clean because it has never moved air. I'd be using the paper method to ensure there is suction, and the squirrel cage design is superior to the paddle fan - I'd leave the new one in.

Would love to see if you could upgrade from a Nuton/Broan to a larger (but quieter) Panasonic bathroom exhaust fan, as I was wondering if it would be a lot of work to enlarge the opening and if there will be some complication if we upgrade from a small fan to a larger one. Thanks!
@gregs_garage Жыл бұрын
yes it would be better. the work involves cutting the ceiling drywall carefully. Then mounting the new fan bracket. Not too difficult but need to be very careful.

The fan sound has a lot to do with the size of the fan. The bigger than fan, the less noise it will make to move the same volume of air. You look at the panasonic fans, they have massive blowers. They move twice the volume of air, with a fraction of the noise, all thanks to the gigantic blowers.
@charlesrodriguez7984 Жыл бұрын
It’s also because the paddle style blades make more noise than a squirrel cage style impeller. If it had a squirrel cage blower it would be quieter. His fan was noisy because of a clogged vent.

@mustangdbest220 Жыл бұрын
@@OscarsPlaces Yeahh also, if it is vented straight out the wall outside, make sure that the flaps are free and if it’s got a little screen, remove that because that will restrict flow as well and kick up the noise level of the fan

Thanks for being honest when the new installation also did not improve the result! I have a 6-sone rating bath fan, much louder, in a house built in 2021, and it is a cheapo. In fact, all of my bath fans are cheapos! I don't understand why builders seem to try to save money in every aspect of the house building. My builder is Century Communities. Did you find the quieter one yet? I saw another video from a guy installing Panasonic one, don't know how that loud/quiet that is.
@gregs_garage2 жыл бұрын
Yes I put a bigger 1-sone fan in. Also there was a birds nest in the vent which made it louder. Did not do a follow up video

Panasonics are teh best SILENT even on 110 cfm they have several models. get teh retrofit models, well designed to replace this old junk. Panasonic is larger so you can work and cut teh drywall a bit larger, and teh Panasnic covers it all, and it comes with a adapter for different size duct. Panasonic clever how it's meant for retrofit, flex bracket, and how parts for electrical, and duct separate for easy work, then clip together and fan is done with 4 self taping screws into the flex bracket
