Bahama Llama Coral

Күн бұрын

I saw these Aqueon rimless tanks and I just knew I needed to replace my current pico reef tank.
…and if I’m being totally honest, this tank needed a good cleaning and restart anyway. I don’t know what it is about the pico reef tank that’s so difficult but I’m hoping third time is a charm with this one. I still need to add a cleanup crew and a LED light strip to illuminate the frosted glass.

Azoo HOB Filter - amzn.to/30G1RAt

Another awesome vid! Looking forward to the reboot. And yes, I agree, picos can be super hard! Astrea snails are my go-to snails. I've been running my Pico for 4-1/2 years. My Pico is a 3.5 gallon Petco AIO (About 2.5 gallons of water) Primary secrets: Weekly water changes 1 gallon. 5 Drops H2O2 every 2-3 days. When algae starts up I increased to 10 drops then back down. ChemiPure changed every 3 months.
@BahamaLlamaCoral
@BahamaLlamaCoral 4 жыл бұрын
Peroxide just for algae mitigation?
@Radian327
@Radian327 4 жыл бұрын
@@BahamaLlamaCoral No... Not "just" for algae. It raises the redox level in the tank. As mentioned no more then 5 drops every 2-3 days. Water stays clearer and all the coral appears "happier." Larger tanks run ozone generators... Similar effect.

Set it, leave it alone. Basic maintenance, let it mature. Don’t keep starting from scratch. Either do it or don’t. Auto top off is key. Then can make 30-50% water changes once a month with 5 gallon tanks are simple. Even easier if smaller.

I tried to do this with a similarly sized tank. After a while I gave up and just got an AIO - I kept having to add equipment to the display to make it function the way I wanted (surface skimmer, heater, small pump, the HOB, the ATO). In a small tank like this eventually you have more equipment hanging into it than rocks, coral and livestock. It looked terrible. AIOs are the way to go for nanos - I got a second hand IM Nuvo 10 for $40, it looks great!
@BahamaLlamaCoral

My pico had bad hair algae for almost nine months, but after that the algae is mostly totally gone. I added 2 large turbo snails, but I think it's mostly just time that did it. It's weird but I almost don't even have to scrape the glass now, even though nitrates are rarely lower than 20 even right after a water change. I have a 3.7g reef that I actually bought a scape from aquatic aptitude (which I love and has EXCELLANT customer serves) but I think my success with the tank is consistancy and large water changes... my thought on the water changes is because the tank is so small any thing that is added that can effect your parameters will effect much faster so removing most of the water (a whopping 5 gallons for you lol) also it helps with no dosing as everything is replaced with the new water added

Low flow is also an issue with that pico. I would recommend a bigger filter. It might sound like overkill but in order to prevent so much algae higher flow will help. I had that tiny filter and it did nothing to help. I get that it looks great since the filter is so small with the size of the tank. But believe me. Add more flow in that pico and Maintanence and your clean up crew and you will be good to go.

Run whites at minimal but don't have to leave out. Look into money cowry, a couple hermits and turbo snail. For heavy algae add a small Mexican turbo then remove. For fish a perfect one would be flaming prawn goby. There are also trimma gobies. Don't be afraid of 100percent weekly water changes. Mine turned 1 year old last month with no filtration. Just light and wave pump. Sand can cause problems if not agitated during weekly changes. Try to feed natural or cleaner foods. Benepets is great at this and doesn't pollute the tank. Was wondering what happened to the Pico lol. I will be moving my Pico to my new home this month or next and also be getting married in less than 2 months so updates are slow for me. Wish you had posted sooner when you first had issues. May have been able to recover it.

Bahama Llama Coral also worth getting a good filter if the cheap one stops cutting the mustard-when I switched the hacked Whisper 10i that barely kept up with my 10gal frag tank to an Aquaclear 50 it made a night and day difference (def price match those- they’re like $50+ in store, $37 online). Also echoing the snails- just three big trochus snails have done an excellent job over the last month. They seriously took it from an overgrown mess to virtually spotless. You gotta be a little patient with them but 1-2 good sized trochus WILL chew through your whole Pico tank with enough time.

What about a cleaner shrimp? Yeah a lot of people have them but their size will be viewed “bigger” in a pico tank

Didn't think about that! I feel like it's antennae would extend to both sides of the tank, 😂

Throw some hermit crabs and snails in there to get the alge under control before it gets out of control. I got 15 snails and 15 hermit crabs in my 20 gallon. No algae in over 3 months I’m staying hopeful

Pico reef hack #1 just change all the water weekly. #2 watch WWC pico reef by reefbuilders and get inspired to just change all the water. #3 get rid of the myths about large water changes. It's the easist and best way to run small tanks.

Dose some vibrant in that tank. It will help control algae. I found the smaller the tank the more the algae. A good cuc is a couple trochus snails and a scarlet burner crab or a fire shrimp. I

Remy, I’m not going to lie, I actually has a bead of sweat running down my forehead when I thought there wasn’t time for a Scott Crow inclusion 😄😰. I would love to see a Sexy Shrimp in the new Pico. Also as you know, I started up a KZbin Channel during lockdown, would be absolutely awesome if you feature my channel 😀😀😀😀😀

Good question. I don't think Aqueon normally does tempered glass but they have a ** on their site that says due to limited materials they may substitute with tempered. If it is, it will have a sticker.
