Update on other GPUs for memory upgrades. I am currently working on a 3060 Ti to upgrade it to 16GB. Other 3000 series are work in progress. A BIOS edit would be required to double the memory on these GPUs. Once the 3060 Ti is completed a video with step by step process will be uploaded. RTX 4000 series cannot be upgraded as they all use 2GB modules and are the highest capacity modules produced to date. GPUs that can be upgraded are 3060Ti, 3070, 3080 10GB, 3080 12GB, and 3080 Ti from the 3000 lineup. The 3000 series is a work in progress starting with the 3060 Ti. Don't forget to subscribe and hit the bell to get notified when the video is released.

What is the price on that upgrade? U should simply make a video before after performance and compare performance to 4000 series.

My setup is more suited for repairs as i use older hardware. For example my CPU is i7 3rd gen. Older hardware works well with the testing software needed for repairs. Since i am also getting into upgrade i do intend to have a benchmarking setup with the latest hardware (CPUs, GPUs etc.) so i can pitch it against each other. Until i can afford to set this up I ill try and make a basic comparison in my future videos like before and after kind of thing. 😁

@@rhl2macwan simply not possible. The 4070 Super has a 192bit bus, aka 6 chips with 2GB (16GBit). GDDR6 was also specificied with 24Gb chips (so 3GB), that would be 18GB, but these chips simply do not exist. Same with 24GB ram, this would require 32GBit (4GB) chips, which simply do not exist (yet) or are not available for sale (there were rumours 2 years ago Samsung had such chips)

I remember reading or hearing somewhere that they stopped doing that because of the speed that VRAM needs to have in order to load assets and stuff fast. It supposedly is a much faster processor and needs higher speed to function properly. My opinion? Yeah, it would be awesome if we could add VRAM by switching sticks or something.

@MelanieNewbery

one reason to have more vram on an older card is so that you can do 3D animation rendering with it. GPU based 3D rendering requires you to load the model into VRAM for each card so the amount of VRAM becomes a limit to the complexity of scene that you can render. more VRAM equals more complex scenes. You can also use multiple cards and split which cell they render to improve render times but you cannot stack VRAM so having more VRAM is very helpful. keep up the good work.

Thank you for applying the thermal paste properly, man. I've seen so many videos of people maintaining or repairing graphics cards, and they don't spread the paste, meaning that parts of the silicon are at risk of not getting cooled properly. Spread paste if on bare core/silicon/diffusion barrier. Use whatever method you want if it's on a IHS.

After I built my first gaming PC in 2008 I bought a second GTX 260 and used SLI until I upgraded to a GTX 570. I never attemped SLI again simply because there were so few games that benefited from it, and often if it worked, the gain was only 60% or less. SLI works --- it's just that nobody cared enough to properly code for it.

o_O Not sure why this popped up in my recommendeds, but watching this is giving me nightmares of doing manual rework on prototype surface mount boards back in the day, which I was *very* aware were worth more than my annual salary at the time - I was told to take as much time as I needed for that run, since the premium was very much on precision & not killing components or boards. Talk about stressful!! On the upside, to my knowledge, I never killed anything. Nice bonus at the end of that run too! :) Much respect to anyone doing this kind of manual rework - kudos.

All information about straps is available in the schematic of the GPU. It also mentions how the configuration should be. I'm using an Infrared Cooker Plate (for cooking) and it's very good even for doing a GPU reball. I wanted to buy a Puhui T8280 but I saw a video of a russian dude doing GPU reball with a IR cooking plate and I tried to do it myself. It's very efficient for GPUs but not good with big PCB boards like ATX Motherboards because those need a big heating surface (the board flexes / wrap so bad when the temperature is not uniform on the whole board).

Wow the driver is just fine with a 22GB 2080Ti? I always heard these memory upgrades (like the 3070 16GB upgrade) resulted in a slightly confused/angry driver. A 22GB 2080Ti is probably a great choice for Stable Diffusion etc. I know 3090 24GB cards are highly prized by people running these applications and can be quite expensive/hard to find despite being quite old now. A 2080Ti with a 22GB upgrade might be quite appealing, I know the price of 2080 cards has fallen quite a lot and is maybe only 20-30% slower than a 3090 in these applications.

It's hard to say if it's worth it for gaming, ie, 12GB is close to recommended 16GB min, but I do remember a Hardware Unboxed vid where extra memory allowed the textures to full form, ie, not enough memory and they are rough blob renders. They even showed a GPU render properly when started, but after 20min it ran out of memory and the pic became worse. Basically it's the cost, like is the $300 swap ok for a 10% better appearance in games.

@@GraphicsCardRepairs-tk7ql Why not go with D8BGX GDDR6X (the 21Gb version)? As you know, there are 3060Ti's in the wild with GDDR6X, like the one I have here waiting to be picked up. However, given that 448.0 GB/s on the GDDR6 HC-14 (14 Gbps) vs 608.3 GB/s on GDDR6X (19 Gbps) version makes almost 0 difference in terms of performance, I highly doubt going from HC-14 to HC-16 would make sense. But going to GDDR6X with higher speeds might make a difference. The only way to find out is to actually try it :) Though I do not know if even with the GDDR6X BIOS, the card will run at the higher speeds and actually run the card at 21Gbps on D8BGX GDDR6X 😕

@GraphicsCardRepairs-tk7ql
@GraphicsCardRepairs-tk7ql 7 ай бұрын
As of now, RTX 4090 cannot be upgraded beyond 24GB of VRAM. Micron GDDR6X is only available in 2GB modules in 21Gbps and 24Gbps. Though it is possible to install 24Gbps modules (supported) to increase the bandwidth however the capacity cannot be increased. The returns on investment in upgrading from 21Gbps to 24Gbps modules will be negligible and benefit minimal (It is a theory based on calculations and yet to be tested though.) If in the future I get my hands on a 4090 and a user is willing, I will put this to the test and measure the difference in performance. If in the future Nvidia launches an RTX 4090 Ti or a 5090 it will be launched with the 24Gbps modules. (Speculation) It's the same with 7900XT or XTX. 7900 XT and XTX use GDDR6 memory and the bandwidth of each module is 20Gbps. Samsung is sampling a 24Gbps memory but it is still sampled and not mass-produced. So for 7900 XT and XTX we are using the top possible memory.

Most here do not know how skilled you must be to do this work under a microscope with 0603 and smaller components 1/5th the size of a grain of rice all over the board. Good clean work for sure..

The only reason for more VRAM would have to very large and Hi-Def texture packs for gaming, or perhaps 3d modelling. Nice upgrade Video Fraser. Cheers!

This is more like it! Ah so cool, wish I still had my 2080ti. I think I need to use more flux with my repairs. Nice work! This would be excellent for some local LLM/Sable diffusion stuff and of course some gaming :) Thank you!

What difference in gaming did it make ? What about trying an old card like gtx 1070 with before and after benchmark.. or gtx 770

I would not recommend this upgrade for gaming. The GPU core falls short long before it can use the added memory. This upgrade was done for AI. It's an excellent choice for AI.

Incredible work. This could be really interesting for 3d rendering / game dev as most of the times VRam is an issue on mid tier cards. if its not super expensive could be a good choice for 3d artists
