Great video! Two questions: 1. Been hearing different opinions on adding the additional SSD to the second slot and the laptop getting hotter. I just ordered a 256 XPS and purchased a 1GB SSD but my plan was to replace the 256 in slot 1 as opposed to adding the 1TB as you did? Any thoughts? 2. Just to confirm, you are saying upgrading RAM at 2666 should be fine (so I don’t have to stress about finding 2933)?

I just got the XPS 15 9500 with 16gb memory, 512gb SSD, i7 6 core, 4k touch panel. Would upgrading my memory to 32 like you or 64gb make a big improvement? Also is it worth putting in another hard drive?
@mr.rogersreviews42244 жыл бұрын
I think going to 32gb only makes sense for video and photo editing in most cases. If you aren’t sure whether or not you need 64gb then you probably don’t need 64gb. As for the storage, it’s really easy to add an m.2 ssd, so if you plan to have a lot of large files like games stored on your XPS then I would definitely add a 1 or 2tb ssd.
@joshslaw22034 жыл бұрын
@@mr.rogersreviews4224 would any of those things or doing both make the laptop noticeably faster? Doing both is probably overkill for me but I like speed and flexibility
@mr.rogersreviews42244 жыл бұрын
For general use, neither upgrade is really going to make your computer feel noticeably faster. I would say if you have to choose one upgrade, I’d add more storage.

Thank you for this video! I have an XPS 15 coming with the 256 ssd and 8GB on RAM, however I have also ordered 32GB RAM and a 500GB ssd to upgrade on day one! I am admittedly a novice and this video gave me the confidence I needed! Question, the RAM I ordered is DDR4 - 2666. Will this be greatly slower than what you installed? Sorry for probably a dumb question lol, but thanks again!
@mr.rogersreviews42244 жыл бұрын
David McDowell hey I’m glad you found the video helpful! No, the ram speed should be fine! In fact, I’ve only been able to get mine to run at 2666 anyway.

The Crucial memory selector is bogus. It recommends voltages and speed options that aren't compatible with your system. For example, the correct RAM voltage should be 1.2, not the 1.35 that you installed. You would be better off with 2 sticks of Kingston part number KCP429SS8/16. In the end, you might have actually downgraded your memory.
@mr.rogersreviews42244 жыл бұрын
Dell always ships desktops and laptops with lower voltage ram. As long as you don’t mix them with higher voltage it’s totally fine. I needed the 32gb more than I needed a few extra hundred MHz.

Hi, thanks for this info, can I use Crucial 32GB Kit (2 x 16GB) DDR4-3200 SODIMM (CT2K16G4SFD832A) instead? From the specs, it is 1.2V but CL is 22.

@mr.rogersreviews42244 жыл бұрын
emarinelli I still only have it running at 2666 unfortunately

This is because the XPS ram runs at 1.2V (DDR4L-2933) Crucial Ballistics looks good on paper with tight timings CL16 and 3200mhz but that’s at 1.35V. At 1.2V you get downclocked to 2600 and probably some horrible timings like CL20. See if OP can run CPU-Z and show us the timings. Basically the ram upgrade is hurting the performance. Dell bios, yay!
@shize9ine4 жыл бұрын
@MARCUSAURELIUS Anything rated at DDR4L-2933 / PC4-23400 , that is 2933MHz at 1.2v. I recommended to a client that wanted to use Amazon this one MD4S1632180IZ0DC that has a CL18. But I would recommend getting a better name brand that has lifetime warranty from newegg.
