Upgrading my ukulele strings!!! Ernie Ball Uke Strings

Raise your hand if you have never changed the strings on your ukulele! Keep your hand up if you haven't done it because you're nervous, lazy, confused about when to do it, or afraid to make a mistake!
For me... it was that I forgot and I was lazy and I was still okay with the tone my ukulele was producing. Then Ernie Ball sent over these strings and I got really curious. I changed the strings on one of my ukuleles during an instagram livestream and I LOVED the result.
Now we will change the strings on one of my top 5 favorite ukes (this blue enya) and upgrade its sound! Let me know in the comments what you think ;)

I must admit, I am getting a little impatient for ordering your 'signature' Ukulele. It will be my first Soprano and with it being a travel Ukulele, I suspect I am going to have a lot of fun with it. I have been checking the Music Room site to see if it's gone on sale early haha! Hope they will have plenty in stock, I think they will need them. Excited!

Definitely warmer sounding like Aquila strings. It doesn’t have that crisp bite that you get with the enya strings. I still haven’t decided if I like crisp sound or not. So many people who have Enyas on KZbin don’t change the string that I had wondered if it would even sound different with different strings. Thanks for solving that question for me. I saw a tip on changing the strings if you want to use the balls by using a guide wire to pull the string through. Great review!

You might like to try this idea next time for restringing that Uk. Thread a piece of fishing line through the bridge and fish it out through the sound hole (pun intended), then tie your new string to the line and try gently pulling it through. Not sure if it would work but maybe worth a try. Thanks for all you great tutorials, cheers, Marcus

Hi! The E chord took me some time to master as well. Just try to play a lot of songs that force you to play the chord as much as possible. The key is really muscle memory. I recommend you to watch this skill drill for the E chord by Ms. B: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kIKqaqSYe9CegcU

Thought take the old string pass it through the top hole. Grab it through the sound hole. Attach to new string and pull not sure if it would work but it’s worth a try!

Keeping a bit of excess strings on the headstock is great help. Once my guitar strings came off from the tuning gear and I had already cut it precisely to tuning gear. 😓

Steve Harris For this type of bridge I put the string through the top and fish it out through the sound hole. Then tie a knot and pull it back from the top until the knot catches. I hope that makes sense!

I put a Decent set of strings on a very inexpensive Ukulele I had and it made a world of difference on how much better it sounded

These Ernie Ball strings are amazing Ms.B. I closed my eyes during the sound comparison and the Ernie Ball strings made your Enya sound like two uke's. There is so much depth and the tone is incredibly full, it really did sound like two uke's playing in unison. They look great with your Enya too. If they make these black strings in soprano size I think they will look and sound awesome on my Black Travel Flight. (Yup, my hand is up 🙋 cause I didn't know when to change strings, think it's time) Off to their website I go :) Happy day Ms.B

I had that problem with my ukulele and our repair tech at the Guitar Center I work at glued that little piece at the top on for me 😅 None of my other ukes were like that and I was struggling so hard trying to change the strings, haha. Unfortunately I have to restring that uke again because the strings I switched to were terrible and would catch my cuticle and I'm dreading it.

Excellent video! I love to see comparisons - the average Joe, like me, doesn't have the budget to try a wide variety of options in instruments and accessories. Presentations like this one help a lot. If you should find a set of strings with a low G that is not wound I'd love to see and hear that.

Couldn’t you drop the strings through the sound hole, leaving the bead under the saddle? Or use a long bent forsep to guide the non beaded end through the saddle,it’ll take allot of patience and steady a hand Awesome review B!

Something I would have considered to keep the beads on the strings is an old electricians trick for running cables. If the holes on the bridge are slightly oversized you could run the old string in to the bridge and out the sound hole. You can then butt the new sting end to the old string end and take a small piece of thin tape to join the two. Then carefully pull the new string through taking special care to run the string as straight through as possible. Maybe this would work, maybe it wouldn’t, but I think it would be worth a shot.

Don't feel bad about breaking off the nut (I swear, the coincidence is insane!) - I just unpacked my new Ortega uke and was taking off one string at a time to replace the default ones with some black carbon strings I had (low G). I undo the first string.. wham, nut came right off - first time that ever happened. Anyways, I didn't like the Low G as much as I had hoped so I came online to buy new strings and noticed that my go-to music store had Ernie Ball strings. Never heard of them, so copy/pasted the brand/model in KZbin, and up came your video with exactly the strings I am looking to buy. Imagine my surprise when the nut on your uke broke off as well :D Long story short - I took off the double sided tape that was still stuck to the nut, degreased the nut, and used rapid set glue to glue in back into place.

I just started playing in January and have the same ukulele (in black) and love it! One of the things I love most is the mellow tone. I didn’t notice a huge difference from the before and after but did using a different kind/brand of string take part of that “mellowness” away?

I have that same ukulele and love the sustain on it. I’m not sure what to do to replace that low G string. I went to Guitar Center and the salesman brought out a box of unique strings, but I wasn’t exactly impressed with this approach. I may reach out to Fender and ask what they strung it with and see what comes of that. Just had not taken the time to do that yet, but I need to...

The Nut should be properly fixed and the strings should be able to be totally removed without it falling off, otherwise how could a proper fretboard conditioning/repair be effected? That is bad on Enyas part, and I'm a fan of the brand. Try Savarez Uke strings from Argentina, they are superb for picking. They are available on Amazon and the brand is famous amongst classical guitarists for their quality and tone. Thanks Bernadette, ❤️🎶🎸🇬🇧

Suggestion: It's possible to keep the original ball/knot of the new strings under the bridge by using an old string to feed from the top of the bridge to the sound hole. Tape the "tuner end" of the new string to the old string and pull the old string back up through the bridge until the new string comes through. Repeat for the other 3 new strings. (The old string performs a role analogous to an electrician's fish-tape for pulling wires.) :-)
