I do describe it incorrectly however as I state more than once that it's an instant hot water solution when it's not. It's basically a smaller and more efficient version to what I had before, but whereas the old tank would always lose heat because of the cold water it also contained, this one has no cold section and does a better job of retaining the warm water over time.

A photo cell on the outside wall and a contactor could provide a solution to only allow it to heat when been powered by solar. This could effectively provide free hot water. Unless you are using lots of water during darkness hrs then there should still be enough to provide hot water for hand washing at all times. Could also add a 1hr timer on a push button to provide a "boost" function if required to heat water when dark This addition would make a nice follow-up video.

@@dsesuk Yep check page 17 of the manual. Our 30 litre model flooded the kitchen after 3 years with water spewing out of the anode chamber. Our 10 litre models failed their appliance test this year with rusty water dripping out of the anode chamber and obvious corrosion around the inlet and outlet pipes (even with the dielectric junctions fitted). Why the tank is made of non-stainless steel and glass is a mystery to me. The IR resistance had also fallen through the floor on both models. Unfortunately with all the complex pipework (expansion vessels, tundishes etc) we had no choice but to nip off to Screwfix and get like for like replacements which were relatively easy to fit in time for us to open. I've replaced the fused spur with a plug top so that I can monitor the IR for signs of corrosion. Our units are under the sinks and a pain to get to so the annual uninstall and drain for inspection will be a nuisance. I haven't yet found the correct part number for the anodes for each model as clearly I need some in stock. It is no good taking the damn thing apart and finding you need to order one.

So I one day found myself looking at the wall and wondering, would it make too much sense to have a "front tank" that could be run when energy is cheap(er) assuming spot pricing on electricity. Then you can preheat some of the water for later use and bring it up to safe temperatures (over 55C to avoid risk of Legionella pneumophila). As it would take less energy to heat lets say 38C water to 65C (default hot water temperature here) compared to fresh water supply (that usually is around 4-13C, depending on the season). This could also act as energy sink if there's solar panels and at the moment no direct need for energy they provide. Some home automation to turn on the elements after AC is happy and that's one of the few practical ways to store energy at home without really expensive upfront battery costs. Assuming that the house needs more warming than cooling, the wasted heat is not really that wasted if the tank is located somewhere indoors. It is just less heating required by more direct means.

You shouldn't really have a valve fitted between the cold water pressure relief valve and the cylinder. It's not exactly a massive risk, but it allows the possibility of defeating one of the pressure safety devices. The supply isolation valve should be before the cold relief valve. It might technically be non-compliant with building regs G3 due to that valve, although might scrape through if there are still two remaining safety devices with the valve closed. I'm not certain about that, just aware that the regs people have a thing for the safety of unvented cylinders due to larger ones demolishing houses when the pressure can't escape and the heat source doesn't cut out for whatever reason (rare, but it has happened in a few cases). Steam explosions have a lot of energy.

I've had good results from the Combimate limescale reducer. Looks a bit like a space helmet, and unlike other similar devices you can see how much is left inside. Nice thing about it is that the water coming out is still drinking quality so you can fit it in line with all the rest of the plumbing unlike a regular water softener. Used on systems that tended to get completely furred up within a couple of years. Had one home made heat exchanger with 15mm pipes inside an outer shell of a 22mm pipe get so clogged the outer passage was solid when cut open with a grinder. That problem completely solved with the Combimate. And yes I've seen the steaming toilet before :D

Don’t you guys have chromed pipes for surface runs over in the UK? Over here in the frozen shithole that is Finland the modus operandi is to run chromed pipes in any finished rooms, and save the copper pipes for utility rooms etc. But then again we also heat our houses to 22C and have 300 liter water heaters. 😂

it won't take long for all 30 LTRs of water to run cold and you'll be waiting around for I to heat up, I work on commercial shops and they fit these in a kitchen cupboardto to feed the kitchen staff room sink an a couple of WC wash hand basins. and once you have washed and rinseda few pots the water is cold. then it's another 30 min before it's hot again. the instant water heaters work more like an elec shower and run at 6 to 8 Kw.

It's only for the basins Scott. I have an electric shower and, in the kitchen, a boiling water tap. It's just a smidge better than the big ol' tank and it doesn't hold all that cold water I don't need. How comes you got rid of gas in the first place Dave? Was that because you installed your solar array and wanted to make the most of it?
@dsesuk
@dsesuk 2 жыл бұрын
I dumped gas back in 2014, foolishly thinking that it was a dinosaur fuelling option which would be phased out by being priced out in the coming years. After all, gas is limited in supply and often has to be imported making it vulnerable to world economics, whereas electricity can be generated via a variety of means that will surely make it a cheaper commodity going forward. Oh 2014, how naive of you! If only you could have foreseen how inept UK governments would be in securing an own means of adequate generation, how Brexit would remove us from a market we need for importing energy and how world events would indeed make the price of gas skyrocket, but that the cost would not be applied to gas users because that would apparently be unfair as not everybody uses gas, so it would instead be lumped on electricity to spread the cost over absolutely everyone. You’ve gotta laugh haven’t you?

Morning Mainline. Which video is that, I can't seem to find it among all those bloody shorts he's pooing out? I don't recall such a conversation, nor would I run tails in walls less than 50mm deep. By design, if the incoming supply is to be some distance from my DB, I would (and have) run armoured if it's to pass any distance through the structure of the building. On retrofit, I've pulled new tails between an exterior box and interior CU through the wall cavity in place of existing old ones like anyone else, but tails in a wall less than 50mm? No, not without RCD or mechanical protection. If Mr B and I have had such a chinwag, one of us must have grabbed the wrong end of the stick!
