In this episode we fit the new tapered roller bearings to the front axles as an upgrade over the standard wheel bearings for our 1973 MkIII MG Midget.
Taper roller bearing kit for MG Midget is an upgrade over the standard front hub bearings which are angular contact ball bearing type. These original bearings work well but does not allow for any adjustment as the bearings wear. Taper bearings provide better support for fast road and competition applications. The kit utilizes the standard bearing spacer for a simpler installation.
We fit the bearing shells to the hub using a hammer and drift; which is how to do this if you don’t have access to a press and a suitably sized socket etc. to press the bearing shells into position.
After a dry fit we measure and set the end float in the front axle to between 0.002 and 0.004 of an inch in a similar way that the MGB front hubs are set with their taper bearings. We discover our dial gauge doesn’t quite have the accuracy we are needing (we ended up borrowing a more accurate gauge to check and seemed to be ok at 4 thousands of an inch).
Once the end float is set we pack the bearings and assemble the hub to the axle; not forgetting to fit either the dust shield or the new brake disk.
