Great video, Seth! I think another tip on uphill running is to run through the hill. So many people push up the hill and then as soon as they reach the top they relax and cut back their effort, thus slowing down - often significantly. If you continue to push a few steps through the hill you can keep your pace up and find the rhythm you need for flat/descending running right away.

I’m so jealous. I grew up in clear creek county (Empire) and went to elementary school in Georgetown. We used to do Mt Bierstadt every once in a while with my dad. Beautiful area, but I had to move to LA for my music career. I love all the info I get from your videos, but also the great views of my old stomping grounds. Thanks for all of it. 😁 I’m currently 43 and training for the Leadville 50, with the hopes of being able to do the 100 the following year. I’m sure the elevation is gonna kill me, but I have family in CO and vacation time, so I can go early and acclimate a bit. ... man, do I ever miss the Rockies!

Great video Seth! Beautiful scenery. I really like your uphill tips. I especially like that tip about shaking out the hands at the crest of a hill. As a coach myself, I tell my runners to do something similar. I sometimes tell my runners to let out a grunt or a yell or even clap their hands at the crest. It kind of acts like a Pavlovian response if you do it often enough in training as you power over the crest, then when you do it in a race it will come naturally, kind of. Anyway, keep up the great work!

I do 40x45-50m sprint repeats on a hill with 2 water breaks and 50-60 sec rest between the reps. During sprinting everything feels more than good, but during breaks when I get to calm down my breathing, my shins get really painful and therefore have to avoid laying down. There have been few occasions when I had to cut the workout short.

Hill trouble- Mental or visual. One road is about 3/4 mile up starts slow but gets steep. I usually die out on the last steep part. One time I ran it in the dark and was over it before I knew it. I guess on steep roads my brain is killing me

In my previous trail race., my first trail ever, I was strugling in the middle of the race going up only a 1 km steep hill. I had to stop 5-6 times because I was out of breath. Maybe I was pushing a little too much at the beginning. Becareful at your pacing and learn the course map.

So are you climbing 14,000 or is that the total elevation of the hill? What’s the starting elevation? Either way... it’s absolutely beautiful! And I apologize... I’ve been spelling Shoedio wrong... Hey Seth, on trails with really steep rock steps or big height gaps between uneven rocks, whats the best way to conserve energy? I find those trails, even if the incline is not terrible steep, to be the most taxing on my legs as hopping up between rocks and having to take large steps upward really produces lactate acid buildup.

I do orienteering, and sometimes the longdistances (~15-20 km) have a lot of up and down, maybe 600 m of vertical up and down on medium sized hills. That really kills me, and with controls on the side of hills, you have to run sideways, go up and the down, or the opposite to get to the control. Together with lots of undergrowth, it slaughters my legs 😂
@SethJamesDeMoor
@SethJamesDeMoor 5 жыл бұрын
Wow, that is a lot of vertical. Thanks for the comment. Where do you orienteer?

I def tend to tire out too fast going uphill. Have to shorten my stride. Trying to jump over and on huge boulders and then I start feeling that hard burn up high on my quads. I need to work on my little quick steps and build up more lung capacity. This AZ heat just zaps it away and it's making these not so hard runs extra difficult. Another great video! One question, do you power hike on your runs or are you really that good to keep at a jogging pace the whole way? That's like superhuman stuff lol
@SethJamesDeMoor
@SethJamesDeMoor 5 жыл бұрын
I have the short steps the whole way but it has taken years to get to that point aerobically. I can't imagine that AZ heat and hills. Keep me posted on the progress.

Pacing for a particular gradient If it’s a new hill and in the middle of a race, how do we know what pace?
@SethJamesDeMoor

Vic, one factor to look at is the amount of lean a hill requires. More lean equals more importance for focusing on form and quick feet.
