Thanks, Kim! Your steps were so easy to follow. I just finished upholstering my own ottoman -- one I'd bought that required a slip cover to be purchased separately. Since I already had a lot of fabric left from a long ago project, I opted to create my own cover, but wasn't sure how to do it. I found your video and voila! Of course, as an amateur, mine has its share of flaws and errors, but I don't think it's too bad for a first timer. A cording foot on my sewing machine would've probably made it a little easier, but I managed with my zipper foot. I'm now inspired to tackle a few more little projects. Thanks again!

Just when I think it can't get any better, you read my mind and tell me the specific details on that sweet sewing machine! Your work is lovely. So neatly done. Even on the inside! Tho now I have not only machine but also air compressor and pneumatic tool envy! I'd be remiss if I didn't also mention how much I appreciate your really wonderfully set up work space. Peg board ( I love peg board, my kitchen is covered in it ) and the custom table around your machine! It's all grand!

KimsUpholstery I'm working on what one might call slip covers of the minimalist variety. Dining room chair covers (ish). I'm reproducing something for a friend and neighbor. The original covers were made by his Great Aunt. Replacing them was preferable to re-upholstering the chairs for sentimental and practical reason. I'll post photos.

this is perfect! A long time customer has a pillow top ottoman and I'd never done one before. It's fairly old and it looks like it was stuffed and then the seam was hand sewn. I love the idea of a zipper so much better. It also has cording along the frame base with fringe. I think I can piece the box part in 2 parts with the cording in the middle and then proceed as you have indicated.

I reupholstered my first couch watching your videos over and over. I just did my first chair with loose corded back cushion and seat T cushion. I am not able to "sandwich" the 3 pieces together like you do so I do them in steps. Hope to get better. You make it look so easy!!

I recently bought an ottoman identical to yours at a garage sale. It's in great condition but doesn't match my couch. After watching your video, I think I'm ready! I can already feel that my biggest mistake will be in measuring where the bottom of the pillow attaches to the base. That part feels a little overwhelming. The ottoman does have piping but my couch doesn't. Do I have to use piping? I'm using a thin brown microfiber fabric. Thanks for the terrific video. Just for fun, have you ever posted any out takes?

Hi Kim. My name is Meg and first off thanks for the great videos. I am in the process of recovering a pillow top ottoman and on my 2nd attempt (1st with your video). I'm stuck though. I have my ottoman frame piece done and ready to attach to right side of bottom cushion piece. You are lining up miters with some box marks located on the bottom cushion piece. Where did those markings come from? I did not have a pattern to follow so I am going off measurements. I hope you can help. Thanks!!

I have the same question!
@KimsUpholstery
@KimsUpholstery 9 жыл бұрын
emerson brantley lovesron Here goes.... I would put the bottom piece for the frame over the frame right side up. Now place the cushion bottom which will be sewn ontop of it right side down. Making sure it is layed ontop so it is even all around, corners match up and such pin it to the frame portion of your fabric very securely. Now take it to the sewing machine and sew it on. You can also use measurements from the corner of your frame fabric into where the seam will be and use this same measurement on your cushion bottom plus the seam allowance (the 1/2" around the cushion edge). Either way will work. Its hard to explain with out a visual to show you, but hope this helps. If you are on FB please share your project pictures on our Kim's Upholstery page. I would love to see them, Kim

Hi Kim, Your great videos will be included in my gratitude lists for tomorrow's Thanksgiving. I have a question about interfacing I hope you'll answer. I apologize for the length! My old cover has interfacing that was used to hold the pillow to the frame. It was sewn to the base component so that it also provided a double row of stitching attaching the base to the pillow top. Then, I suppose with the base component inside out over the pillow, the interfacing was stapled to the frame. Next the edge roll and cotton batting were applied. There was also a strip (approx 2" wide) of a layered paper product stapled on top of the interfacing at the lower edge of the frame under the cotton batting (and the skirting which isn't being replaced). Then the base component must have been pulled down, turning right side out over all of that. Not until I was writing this, did I come up with the theory that the interfacing was used to provide protection against lateral movement of the pillowtop and any stresses would be at least partially absorbed by the IF rather than just the base component. If that's not why they did it, what was the reason? I'm wondering if that wasn't overkill? Was the one you've redone here attached to the frame in the same order? Presuming you say that using the interfacing at the very bottom is the old way of doing it and it isn't necessary to reconstruct it in the same way, would you change your answer if I tell you that my dog runs and jumps up on the furniture with way more force than you'd think a 25# dog could muster and that the cover fabric is a faux leather (polyurethane not PVC)? Many thanks for all the videos that you have put out to help all of us amateurs.
