@@upir_upir I imagine you could build nixie cube bar gauges, it could look like those early digital instruments, depending on how large the cube is you could make it to display the revs and have another one with numbers for the speed. But I don't know if there are any nixie cubes like that so even if its possible to build one it would probably be expensive to build do so. So if you were to build one out of readily avaliable materials it would probably be to just use a regular gauge as a rev counter and have the speed be displayed by the nixie cubes. There were a lot of motorcycles that used this mix of analog and digital display back in the day so it wouldn't look too out of place.

This reminds me of a transistor logic circuit I designed in the early 2000s that would provide the input to operate an LED starburst display to show gear position. It was designed to use four microswitches that made contact with the shift linkage (forward, backwards, left and right). From there it was able to decode any position the shifter was in (it could even tell you were wiggling the shifter left and right in neutral). The starburst display also had the ability to show characters for N and R. I love the execution of this concept! It would be neat to see a custom nixie tube manufactured specifically for shifters that had 1-2-3-4-5-6-N-R as characters inside the tube.
@upir_upir9 күн бұрын
That sounds like a cool project! Do you have a video of it somewhere? I would love to see it. As for the custom nixie tube - if I ever find a way how to make a custom one with the proposed digits, I will definitely turn this into a real project. Right now, it´s kind of hard to show neutral and reverse in some meaningful way.

Also side note for printing but you should rotate everything sideways and print using tree supports. Tree supports are really nice and use less filament and seem to work super well for me and break off easy. The side ways printing is so that if you actually use the shifter they layer lines don’t line up with the force for shifting, this means the parts should not sheer apart on a layer line. Just a tip because I have made the mistake of printing what was easier but the part doesn’t hold up and shears at the lay lines when force is applied.

Thank you for your comment, a lot of useful information! May I ask what kind of 3D printed part have you sheer apart? This shifter knob feels pretty solid.

Nixies came out in 1955 soooooo... Any car from 1955 to about 1970. I remember as a child in the early 70's only seeing nixies on "older" stuff...they had already been replaced by vacuum fluorescent displays, LCDs and LEDs. My number one vote would be the 1st to 4th gen Ford Thunderbirds (esp the 4th gen "Jet Birds")

Yes, nixie tubes had a short lifespan where they were actually used, but they still look futuristic! Ford Thunderbird would be a great choice.

@@psygnale nixies were used even up until the 1980s in some places.
