I once helped a magpie (common Australian corvid) when it was being pursued by a local cat. The bird had developed what, in humans, would have been called hysterical paralysis. It was literally frozen with fear, to the point it didn't move when I picked it up off the curb and took it out the back where I thought it would be safe. The bird hung around for a day or say afterwards, and one morning, returning from the school run, it was looking for food in the front lawn. It pulled up a worm, tore a bit off, and dropped it at my feet. Unfortunately I didn't eat the bird, which must have been something of a dick move in their culture (sorry Rick), because it got offended and flew away shortly afterwards.
