TikTok is the logical extreme of audio visual social media, even beyond the existing platforms which are acknowledged (from their founders and creators) to be harmful to youth, and society.
TikTok is rife with scammers, predators, and harmful trends that make a mockery of the worlds worst tragedies. These are but a few reasons why I hate the platform.

I am a teenager who has never used tik tok and I agree that it is extremely toxic, but oh my gosh that holocaust trend made me so mad. My great great grandparents literally immigrated to America to escape Hitler and without doing that they would’ve been thrown into a concentration camp, (they were Roman-Catholic and didn’t agree with Hitler’s views, and those kinds of people were killed in camps as well) so seeing kids my age joking about what could’ve been my family’s reality made me so enraged. They’re literally taking real people’s trauma and death and turning it into something cute and funny. So glad I never fell down the tik tok rabbit hole.

I've been a college teacher for 20 years and let me tell you.. I watched it all happen in realtime very slowly over the course of two decades. Watched how it impacted the learning capacity of my students and degraded their early development. Their attention spans got smaller and smaller and thier ability to focus on what I was teaching for more than 15 minutes faded. First it was KZbin and MySpace, then Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. I remember back in 2005 my students would be able to listen to me for an hour and absorb and understand a LOT more information. I also watched this arrested development happen over those two decades. The personality of what would be a 15-year old in my generation became the personality of a 22-year old. I even remember our college faculty having a meeting about it and we were taking a preparation course on how best to handle these new wave millennial kids going to college. Standards were lowered. Unacceptable behavior was tolerated.

I was born in '99 and didn't touch the internet until mid high school, and even now I don't use tik tok. my second cousin who is 16 just moved in with us recently who was raised off the internet and tik tok obsessed has really shocked us to say the least. She talks about some pretty dark stuff she found off tik tok and likes, as well as finding the "devious licks" (students committing theft at school) tread to be her favorite. Same goes for the short attention span, and nonstop referencing tik tok videos everyday. I get having hobbies and enjoying media in your free time, but this is too much.

I 100% agree with you. I hated TikTok to begin with mainly because of the whole premise (watching people lip sync and dancing etc.) and how stupid and useless it is. But I hate it even more because I have to deal with it every so often. My niece who's now 10 yrs old has a smartphone (which is too young to have one), and all she does is either playing Roblox, Among Us, or watching TikTok. Literally every single time I see her, she's on her phone. During road trips when she's around, I can hear everything she watches on TikTok. What she watches is not only so annoying, but so downright terrible she sometimes leave one on loop for maybe 3 minutes at most. Being in the same car as her is living Hell. Whenever her phone dies, she complains about it and begs for a charger, and complains again if the chargers not working. I feel like this is the state of kids nowadays, and I don't think it will change anytime soon. If anything it'll just make it all worse for newer generations as long as TikTok continues to stick around. For once, I actually agreed with Trump with banning TikTok in the states 2 years ago (I'm not a Trump supporter). Unfortunately it never happened and continues to this day dominate like never before for the worst.

I once saw a guy in a group of high schoolers in my class brag about how he spent 3 HOURS on TikTok and didn't even notice the passage of time. The other students in the group then chimed in with their own stories about their own TikTok usage. Honestly, as somebody who was able to dramatically reduce my social media consumption and is now way more happier and productive than before, it boggles my mind how my generation views excessive amounts of social media as just normal now. I'm so glad I never downloaded the app and got a book reading and coding hobby instead.

Honestly, TikTok is just straight-up toxic. I’ve been asked by many people why I don’t have an account, and every single time I basically stated the exact (condensed) reasons. And despite me telling them this, *they just don’t care!* They continue to use the app. I feel like so many potential friendships have been lost because I’m (probably) out of touch with people my age (e.g., don’t like the same music, don’t use social media, etc.), but I think I’ll keep it that way; I only have like two close like-minded friends that agree that TikTok is cringe.

I feel so bad for children these days. They don’t know truly how bad or irrelevant social media is to there young youth stages. Social media for them is pretty much our etch a sketches, magic 8 balls, Rubik’s cubes etc. For me, I didn’t even get my first phone until I was 13 and even then I had to share it so I wasn’t using it much except for maybe to call or text. Now that I’m a late teen I can decipher what’s bad on the internet and what isn’t. I still stick to playing outside and video games though.
