I love it. When I first began to paint, I had the ability to just paint and play. I think that’s because I had no expectations. How I wish I could do that again. I have so many sketch books full of junk (my husband doesn’t think it’s junk). The bottom line is that I want back the feeling of no expectations. I was much more creative! Your work sings a happy song from page to page!

Have you ever tried the Strathmore 400 Series Watercolor Sketchbooks that they have in both Hardcover & Softcover like this Mixed Media version you used? I love them more than the mixed media version for the watercolors. They are also good for some of the other mediums (gouache, colored pencils, watercolor pencils, & inks) but not so good for markers. I love 💕 seeing your growth with painting all of the colorful abstract landscapes from your trips & travels. Thanks for sharing this sketchbook tour & review with us!

@sonyaoart3 ай бұрын
@@annferguson3581 I would, as long as you go in with the right expectations. The one I have is the Watercolour Book Discovery (190gsm), and I think it's their entry-level paper. It is not great paper, but it works well if you just want an affordable sketchbook to experiment in. That's what I bought it for, and I've used it almost every day since I bought it three weeks ago. It's not giving you nice, even blends, but if you don't mind that, I think it's good. It takes lots of water, even though the paper buckles, but it straightens out fairly well. Hope this helps, and if I left anything out, please ask!

I have the exact same Strathmore Mixed Media 100% cotton softcover sketchbook. I bought it thinking it would be great with watercolor. I was sorely disappointed when it buckled and didn’t behave the way I expected it to. However, I figured out that I needed to adjust my watercolor technique, and then I really enjoyed using it. Also, it’s good with creamy and pigmented coloring pencils. Before I finished the one you have, I bought the same sketchbook, but a larger size. So far I’ve used my second one primarily for florals in coloring pencils. Thanks for sharing!

Strathmore 500 is my go-to sketchbook, I love 💖 it! It is hands down the best for gouache, and very good for colored pencils. I use some watercolor line and wash, and it takes that well. For wet on wet or large watercolor I use a block or single piece of paper.

Perseverance & acceptance led you to some discoveries you may not have had at that time. 2. Things/skills I’m learning through art are directly transferable to my health recovery journey too. We don’t know what gifts lie around the next corner. You don’t get to be here without walking on through. So I’m gonna carry that quote from 19:43 with me “I’ve got peace that makes no sense”. Perseverance Acceptance w/ a sense of Calm/Peace. That state of being bears the gift of freedom. 💕

I love what you did in this sketchbook. The colors are fabulous. I bought my first sketchbook in 2024. I bought it from Michael's online. I thought I would use it for watercolor. It isn't very water friendly. I have done watercolor, lightly. I've used other media as well. In areas, I've glued two pages together for a sturdier page. I'm going to keep using it as it is almost full. I have since purchased better sketchbooks.

I just went and pulled out the exact same Strathmore sketchbook, that I have left buried and languishing and dust. I only did a few pages of testing things, no sketches: inks and brush pens (pretty good), watercolours (meh, very lifeless), and mushroom spore prints (not bad). In watching your "review", I think I'll dust mine off and just keep going with trying different media, maybe do a few sketches, and since 'shroom season is ramping up here in northern British Columbia with the autumn weather, I'll hunt for a few fungi to try some more prints. Thank you for the video! It was good timing for me to make me feel I just need to keep on, keeping on. :)

I just finished my first sketchbook, a Stillamm & Birn Beta Series! I started it at the end of 2021 and only just not finished. 😅 I was worried I'd put too much pressure on myself to make my next sketchbook more "aesthetic", so I just considered the new one an extension of the old one; I can paint or swatch or make something ugly just like in the old one. That mindset really helped me jump right into the new one. I'm sticking with Stillman & Birn for this one because it's where I feel comfortable and don't want to put pressure on myself if I upgrade sketchbooks. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

I am currently about to finish up a cheapy sketchbook I found for $2.99 that started to come apart at the spine when i tried to use watercolor - but i just taped it up (badly, because it's coming apart again LOL) and switched over to dry media - pens, pencils, neoII, gel-sticks, markers, acrylic markers.... Soooo much fun that I'm finding myself experimenting, having fun, playing with color combos and just enjoying the process with the junk book. I look forward to beginning the next book. I also look forward to your next video - they are always so inspiring ❣️❣️❣️

By the way, I love all the wild colours you have used in your landscapes and hope I can similarly experiment and not be too precious with this even though I love it (I do my experiments in the Royal Talent usually because its super cheap and there are so many pages in that sketchbook but this paper is so much better at handling water which I love to throw at my sketchbooks!).

I think you should be really proud of this completed sketchbook. I just purchased this same sketchbook- haven’t started it yet, and based on your comments I fear I may have the same issues you described with the watercolours sitting on top of the paper. Oh well, sometimes you take a risk on a new art supply, and it works out, and sometimes it doesn’t! My favourite sketchbooks are ETCHR, Stillman and Birn Beta Series, and for a rough and ready sketchbook I also like the Jackson’s 11x15” spiral as well as their hard bound sketchbooks. But I’ve tried many many brands, and currently have over 30 sketchbooks yet to be started ( yes, I have a problem)😂 ***Would love to know what you are using for your white lines/highlights in this book. wonderful shares!! watercolor ground helps for w/c on different papers for texture.... seems july-august ii acquired 20 different sketchbooks of (mostly small) varied sources from smooth to rough, pulpy to 100% cotton rag, lay flat to wire bound, & like supplies, from student to artist grade... this is in addition to at least as many unused pads, & 10 in progress, crafty stuff to specific studies... so no to worries about 'finished pieces' as some books got put down as other projects took flight, and as skills evolved & improved, 'older' books got reinstated as ii knew what would go on top of the bases, or ii had certainty about what the piece 'was asking for' in order to complete that phase. Your quality & quantity of expression, artistically & vocally, really leaps off the screen with exuberance & delight. Just keep going...we love it any way you show up.

I've learned there's no such thing as a good and bad drawing; everything just is. Once you realize this, it reduces stress and makes creating a lot easier. My thoughts are that Art is more about the currents of energy flowing onto the paper than anything else. I've got a 500 mixed media Strathmore hardbound in the process of getting through. I've mainly used pencils, pens, and ink. I haven't done a lot of watercolor or gouache yet. Your video makes me want to try more of that.

Ok so I’m using this same damn sketchbook atm actually 😂 I hunted it down once I found out it had 100% cotton paper. (I actually bought two different sizes, big and small, and a small toned one too 😬 but full disclosure, they were bought specifically with the intent of using them for mixed media) Cause, watercolor + 100% cotton paper is great. And same for gouache too. Like you lol. But all I’ve done is literally sketch in it 🙃 I’ve been too scared to apply anything after said sketch tho. Every time 🙈 then I finally finish one sketch to my liking and the plan was to use caran dache neocolor i’s bc I bought a set years ago and stupidly thought they were ii’s for some reason. They were not and I was so mad at myself once I realized 😅 but anyways, I’ve literally never used them. They just sit there cause I love the ii’s and tbh don’t even think of them. Out of sight out of mind kinda thing. But I’ve been trying to branch out into mixed media more after my first attempt at using said mixed media recently actually really impressed me. And I’m like super self critical, picking my paintings apart usually. But this damn mushroom and ladybug based off a pic from unsplash, imo, came out so freaking good lol. Like it’s 100% one of my favorites I’ve ever done status. So that got me to thinking I should use other mediums besides watercolor and gouache more, this sketchbook prob can take it, got said sketchbook…s, and now I ended up sketching this wicked cool boa with this hot pink mechanical pencil and again, really impressed myself. But some point I came up with this neocolor i’s idea. And now that I finished the sketch and like it so much as is, I’m afraid to use the wax pastels on it 🤦🏼♀️ So it’s just been sitting there. Waiting. Maybe this video will give me the push I need to just do it finally 🤞 Also love your work btw. Discovered you recently through Kristy Rice I believe and I too love adding that same kinda hot pink wherever and whenever I can so I absolutely loveeee your sketchbook pages from this. I also love your florals as well. All the colors you use I love lol. And the gold. Love the gold. Plus I think your style is 🤌 so I guess sorry for the novel and keep up the amazing work! 💖🎨🖌️

For a sketchbook, if the water just sits there on the paper you might want to use less and also thicker paper so it absorbs the water. Generally at about 300 gsm hot pressed cotton it would do fine if you would control the water amount, if you use cellulose the results are not as good. There were many good sketches, in particular the more colors you used the more exotic everything looked and it worked well. Thank you for review, pretty hair lady 😊😊

Fast forward to it being my absolute favorite paper for handmade sketchbooks)) and for the exact same reason you mentioned here: being relaxing and freeing painting in them, of course they also contain some of my most favorite works, while my `precious` Saunders Waterford one, still hangs empty on the shelves (- after ruining the first two pages from being too stiff and almost stressed with `niceness of paper`)..
