32 years at UPS. Retired. Even though I did not work "inside" and started as a summer cover driver, eventually I got on the full-time roster. THEN I was a cover driver, never knowing whose package route I would do that day. I was generally handed a map and told to go do this route. I look back and don't know how I could muster up the courage to go out "blind" on a route and was always expected to perform as fast as the regular driver. It was the most nerve racking experience and honest, I still have nighmares of not being to able to perform to UPS standards Eventually due to growth in the company and attrition I gained enough seniority to bid my own route. At first the only routes that remained when it got to me were "cover jobs" but at least I had a bid route. Then with more attrition, retirements, growth, etc. I was able to bid my own real route. Even then I had to take what was not already taken. When the bids got down to me, usually ended up with the one no one else wanted. Eventually as I gained seniority once again for the 3 reasons I mentioned, I actually had a choice of 3 or 4 remaining routes. It was a long time before I felt comfortable on my own route. All this time I lived with the threat of being bumped by a senior driver at annual bids. Some guys loved to bump around routes and it was very nerve racking always wondering if you were going to have to learn a new route, and your customers and the businesses and etc. etc. Finally after 10 years a job vacancy opened up in the feeder dept. They trained me for my CDL license and I went into feeders. Once again because feeders has a different seniority list I started at the bottom all over again. I was bumped all around in feeders also, sometimes having to bid jobs in different buildings or else go back to delivering packages. (NOT). Eventually I bid a job in feeders I loved and all the stress was off. Finally. That took 21 years.. I retired in 2016 and have not regrets at all. For anyone that thinks that little brown truck looks like any easy job,, I have news for you. I never thought I had it in me to devote so much effort into a job. It's not easy until you get a lot of so called whiskers (seniority) and then your choices of vacations and jobs get much easier to obtain. Anyone who has gone through what I did knows how hard I worked and I never have to justify the fine wages, benefits and retirement I have received. It was all worth the effort.

I know this is an old comment but is there anywhere I can talk to you about your experience? I work at ups (I'm on site right now lol) and intend on becoming a feeder driver when I'm old enough, and I'd like to ask you about how it goes.

Word of advice: If someone walks up trying to talk to you while you are hooking or unhooking, tell them to hold on. Finish the hook first. This will keep you from making a mistake.

My daddy drove doubles for 23 years and started out working in the hub but wanted to drive so the company trained him and retired after 30 years working for UPS. He worked at The Hub in shipping and as a feeder driver for the UPS in Atlanta GA. He really loved his job and was a very dedicated driver too -he has often said that he had to do his job all over again he wouldn’t have changed anything!! That’s how dedicated he was to his job -best job in the world!!! This is a very nice truck . He too had to hook up dollies like that but he had a wonderful job and a dedicated driver. My hats off to all UPS drivers and a great company to work for !!! He retired after 30 years of service on October 27th,2000.

Get a routine . Do it the same way everyday with no distractions . Like unhooking a trailer . First thing,lower the legs. Next,unhook glad Hands , then pull fifth wheel. Always eliminate the worst thing to the least thing that could screw up. Do it this way and you’ll never drop a trailer, stretch .or break a rear window with your glad Hands! Same with pretrip . You do all that in reverse.Your sub conscience with actually take over!
@romanticdonkey4686 жыл бұрын
Paul Grimm .... Absolutely agree. It’s best never to interrupt someone when they are working on their equipment. Breaking someone’s routine is usually when bad things happen. Doing the same routine every single day in the same order is absolutely critical. Shortcuts are a bad idea. My definition of Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is looking. Working this way has kept me safe over the years. I’ll be at 1.5 million safe miles next year, and I still have another 25 years to go.
