I started watching Ramsey clips a few months ago. What is shocking to me is that the overwhelming majority of money problems people talk about on this show are not only easily avoidable but almost always self inflicted based on bad choices. I am shocked at how careless people are with their money.

Some people don’t have cash like that, it’s a reality. Young people have to go into debt just to go to college, they’ll obviously need a car and working/going to school is always possible. Not to mention rent, food, etc. I’m making good money now but def had to struggle to get outta debt and even then I still have a mortgage and cars to pay. It’s just the way the system is set up, yes I could buy a $10k car but wont come with warranties and it’ll probably be older with issues or high mileage. Lets be realistic, the financial system here is to blame for keeping us all in debt with high interest rates. This is how we pay back the Covid money that was given to us.

They will sometimes, if it is a reasonable amount. Reason being, is that if they repo that truck, and sell it for $30,000, she is still on the hook for that $17,000 in unsecured debt. They would rather not have to go through the expense of the repo if they don't need to, and get that same $30,000 today and be in the same position they would be after the repo. That said, a $17,000 deficit is a lot for it to work. Even if she got to the fictitious $10,000 Dave talked about, that's still a lot for an unsecured loan.

Be very careful when getting the used minivan. All minivans are fairly high maintenance and aren’t renowned for reliability, except for one. The Toyota Sienna. ONLY BUY the TOYOTA. Period. Look for one owned that has some maintenance history as many people will buy them, do zero maintenance, drive them to the cliff’s edge and dump them so to speak.

My wife has a 2017 Sienna that will be paid off in a few months. It’s at least worth 20k. My 2016 RAV4 will be paid off in two months and still worth about what I paid for it - 18k. We are driving these cars until the wheels fall off.

How do you get so upside down on an auto loan. Anyone doing this is paying a stupid tax with every payment.
@JasonGroom
@JasonGroom 6 ай бұрын
Often it is no down payment, and the fact they were already in a negative equity position on the previous car. Usually it is people with bad credit, or even just not good credit these days, that doesn't have the cash, and won't get approved for the best rates anywhere, and dealers use their ability to finance them as leverage to increase the price beyond the value.

Strange they are that upside down on a truck. I'm wondering if instead of obtaining the actual payoff from the bank, she simply multiplied payment amount by the number of outstanding payments. "How did you calculate payoff amount?" should be a standard question on these types of calls.
