I got laid off this past November, it was a total surprise. I remember being so stressed at the time, for obvious reasons. But I am only 24, single, and thankfully had enough savings to get me by for a while, at least until I found another job. It just makes me realize how right my grandma was saying “it’s never so bad it couldn’t be worse” - if I had been laid off with $250k debt, or a family to provide for on top of things I can’t imagine 😳😳 I am so thankful for my parents, my family, and my upbringing for instilling the value of saving and living below your means among many many other things. I am certainly blessed, and I should take note from my grandma, but I pray that I find someone special to share my life with and a career that is more personally fulfilling to me. In due time I suppose! As my mom says “let go and let God” ❤️

Lifestyle creep happens to just about anyone. The more money he made, the more he spent, but in his case, he probably spent 10x what he should have spent with each raise. People feel safe in their jobs, so he thought he was set for life.

He was in tech. They were overpaying people to not do much and now theyre cutting all that stuff out which is why you see all the layoffs in tech but not really layoffs in other industries.

Why didn't they ask what his career is? That's a very high income and I would be interested in what skill set he has to offer as he looks for his next opportunity. (certain jobs, one is engineer, are easier to get than others because having a P.E. is difficult to get)

I am guessing software manager or some sort of product/program manager at a startup. There are a lot in Atlanta in the CRM/HR space and they are getting hammered with layoffs now that VC money is drying up. His concern for finding a new job makes me think he is not a software dev, an experienced dev in his 30s could find a job pretty quickly but not the high paying startup role, those days are over for now

Doubt he will find the same paying gig. Lots of people were making over-inflated salaries from the artificial demand and growth in 2021 & 2022. Now we are seeing layoffs and a reset in the market. He was probably in tech and that next job will take him 3 to 6 months to land and will pay him $150k instead of $220k.
@stuffykong Жыл бұрын
Agreed. There was also a super amplified boom bust for tech in Atlanta in particular. Lots of tech companies saw this city as a source of high talent at lower cost (given the colleges in the area with decent engineering programs). Started moving jobs over and trickle down resulted in increases in cost of living, housing etc. I take an even more dour stance: some jobs will be gone forever and investment in some areas will not match what they had before.

He (like so many others) was addicted to spending and highlife regardless of how much he earned. He disregarded how much he made and overextended himself with LOC/CC, car loans, a home mortgage, and women. I wonder how many women he passed up that would still be with him, to be with the ones that no longer take his calls?

He’s got about 4.5 months of emergency fund before we get into any kind of unemployment insurance. Why haven’t we talked about a new job until the very end of this? Why did we talk about selling the house first? Jade asked the key question and then George interrupted the answer: how long until you can get a new job? Get a job in 1-3 months and there is zero problem.

@@wordsalad01 Well some how people making 60k drive Luxury cars. So with 5000 square feet being considered a Mansion I do believe that making 300k you can buy a 5 or 6000 square foot house and a couple of luxury cars. People making 100k buy 2500 sqaure foot houses and also drive nice cars and still save in 401ks. Sounds like the couple making 300k are spoiled and must waste alot. After taxes they can live off $17,000 a month. Im sorry I don't have any sympathy for them if they are complaining about that.

@Kelsey Campbell oh no doubt we make good money. I have made less than $60k/year for a long time, I'm just saying that people have the misconception that $300k means you're wealthy and can live an extremely lavish lifestyle when that's not the case.
