I've never really read about any hostility between Sumerians and Akkadian in the sense you portray it. See, the Sumerians were not a homogenous nation but rather city states in constant wars with each other. As far as I've understood it, it was not an ethnic struggle and they intermingled quite frequently. Some scholars even suggest that the princes of the Neo Sumerian period had Akkadian as their mother tongue and that Sumerian had ceased being a spoken language by then. As for the Sumerians themselves, one might ask why they must have come from somewhere? It's perfect plausible that they lived among other tribes of humans in the area before they settled down and began farming.
@HistorywithCy4 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your comment. I'm also not referring to an ethnic conflict but more of a cultural one. On an everyday basis, yes, Sumerian and Akkadian-speakers lived among each and for the most part got along much like the different peoples living in cosmopolitan cities such as New York or London do today. There were Akkadian-speakers living and trading in southern Sumerian cities as well as Sumerian-speakers in northern Mesopotamia. However, for the most part, you never had the sort of political unification of the area that occurred under Sargon's reign (Lugalzagesi did form a large realm for himself but it didn't last too long, plus he himself was a Sumerian ruling over a majority Sumerian population). With Sargon came greater centralization and a new Akkadian elite class, and this is what caused a great deal of tension between the two groups. Your second point is plausible, we just don't know. The dominant theories believe that they were outsiders due to linguistic and cultural differences that occurred in Mesopotamia around the time of their arrival, although it seems that they also adopted much from the preceding Halaf and Ubaid cultures that were prevalent in southern Mesopotamia before their arrival. Anyway, that's just my view based on what I've read. There are some scholars who would probably disagree with this. Thanks for stopping by, I really appreciate it and if you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask. This type of discussion is great!
@martinfalkjohansson52044 жыл бұрын
@@HistorywithCy Qibima, umma Martinma, Wow, I was not expecting that kind of an answer :). I took 3 semesters of assyriology so I am generally overly pedantic whenever people talk about Mesopotamia. But, even going in fromt that angle, my above statements were the only thing that came to mind. But, I am looking forward to see if you dare to tackle cuneiform and the language itself ;). As for who the Sumerians are and where they came for, I think it was Kramer who said that it did not really matter and they could plausibly have lived there since time immemorial. The problem with that question is the, quite oddly so, prestige the Sumerians seem to have and a lot of ethno-nationalistic movements try to somehow link themselves to Sumerians to prove their superiority. And, something I would love to see - albeit it has been done before - is something debunking the ludicrous crap churned out bu Zitching and his dimwitted followers. Searching for Sumer, and anything similar, will give you heaps of Ancient Alien woo.

The city of Abraham

@Tech Tacho You don't think Abraham could have walked up the Euphrates?
@HistorywithCy4 жыл бұрын
@Tech Tacho Hi, thanks for your comment, I really appreciate it and it’s great to hear other points of view. So, this is why I and many scholars (not all, but most) believe that he was born in what would have been the Sumerian city of Ur. The reason is that the Hebrew Bible states he was born in "Ur of the Chaldees" - the translation of "Ur kasdim" in Hebrew. I understand that scholars such as Josephus and Maimonides may say upper Mesopotamia, allowing some to make the claim that it is Urkeish, but this to me doesn’t make sense. At the time of Abraham’s supposed birth, Urkesh was not that significant a place (see my video on the Hurrians). However, the ancient Sumerian city of Ur was still one of the most cosmopolitan and influential cities in the ancient world. When the Hebrew Bible was first being written down, Ur would have been part of Babylonia and until the Persian conquest, had been ruled by a Chaldean dynasty. Hence, calling it “Ur of the Chaldees” would make sense. It is this same Chaldean dynasty under Nebuchadnezzar II that destroyed Jerusalem and brought the Israelites as captives to Babylon. The Chaldean, let alone any Babylonian dynasty, save possibly the first Dynasty of Babylon (the one Hammurabi was from), never ruled as far north as Urkesh. The earliest Biblical writers would have known this, as would have the compilers of the Babylonian Talmud as well as the many Jews living in Babylon. So, that’s briefly why I would argue that the Sumerian city of Ur would be the city of Abraham’s birth and not some place in upper Mesopotamia or Anatolia. That's my take on it. Thanks though for your comment, it’s always good to hear other points of view and I appreciate it!

Hey Cy you are incorrect about Ur and Abe. Jewish scholarship identifies Abraham's birthplace as somewhere in Upper Mesopotamia. This view was particularly noted by Nachmanides (Ramban). Some place Ur Kaśdim at various Upper Mesopotamian or southeast Anatolian sites such as Urkesh, Urartu, Urfa or Kutha.
@HistorywithCy4 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your comment, I really appreciate it and it’s great to hear other points of view. Actually, according to tradition most scholars I’m not incorrect and I'll explain as to why. In the video, I simply state something like "adherents of Judaism, Christianity and Islam may know the city as the birthplace of Abraham…" because honestly, that's what MOST, NOT ALL, scholars believe. The reason is that translations of the Hebrew Bible state he was born in "Ur of the Chaldees" - the translation of "Ur kasdim" in Hebrew. I understand that scholars such as Josephus and Maimonides may say upper Mesopotamia, allowing some to make the claim that it is Urkeish or Urartu, but this to me and others doesn’t make sense. At the time of Abraham’s supposed birth, Urkesh was not that significant a place and the state of Urartu didn’t exist. However, the ancient Sumerian city of Ur was still one of the most cosmopolitan and influential cities in the world. When the Hebrew Bible was first being written down, Ur was part of Babylonia and until the Persian conquest, had been ruled by a Chaldean dynasty. Hence, calling it “Ur of the Chaldees” would make sense and distinguish it from any other possible Urs in existence (that sounds weird, I know). It is this same Chaldean dynasty under Nebuchadnezzar II that destroyed Jerusalem and brought the Israelites as captives to Babylon. The Chaldean, let alone any Babylonian dynasty, save possibly the first Dynasty of Babylon (the one Hammurabi was from), never ruled as far north as Urkesh or Urartu. The earliest Biblical writers would have known this, as would have the compilers of the Babylonian Talmud as well as the many Jews living in Babylon. So, that’s briefly why I would argue that the Sumerian Ur would be the city of Abraham’s birth and not some place in upper Mesopotamia or Anatolia. Anyway, that's my take on it. This history, brings a deep question to ask about Abraham. He was from Ur, and he and his family worshipped Nanna, the deity of Ur. When he was called out of Ur, who did he think he was talking to? He had no knowledge Jehovah, or El, only knew of the Sumer gods. The Bible doesn't cover this. Abraham must have thought Nanna (who was the god of wisdom, amongst other things), was calling to him to do a great thing. Only after he left, did he adopt the Canaanite word for Nanna, El. This to me is a matter of serious theological thought. And perhaps over time, did Nanna or El, change Abraham's thinking or instruct him. Did the people of Sumer get it all wrong? And call each side of Nanna a different name?

Lycius Martin Another dating for Abraham has him leaving Ur with his extended family around 2000 BC. If so, that would be well after The Akkadian Empire and also right at the end of the Third Dynasty of Ur. In any case, ALL the dating schemes I have run into has Abraham well after Sargon the Great.

The term BCE is offensive. It indicates an active rejection of Christ. Matthew 10:32-33, "But whosoever will deny me before men, him I will also deny before my Father which is in Heaven." Our words and actions have consequences.
@WokeandProud Жыл бұрын
It doesn't it's just an academic term referring to before the common era also not everyone is Christian so maybe our terms should be more inclusive anyway.

@husambotros39584 жыл бұрын
Ubaid is a name for a well known Arabic tribe in Iraq and was used to refer to the culture pre sumerian although the tribe name was used to name the culture it has nothing to do with it other than they lived there.

According to new studies. Ancient man was very hairy. After he lost his hair, the skin which was covered by hair, was light before It slowly turned darker. The thing Is though that not all of them (If any) waited for their hairless body to turn crisp (dark brown/pitch black) before leaving the continent. Because the transition from dark brown/pitch black and back to light has never been proven. But we have seen tanned skin (light brown/brown) turn light again. But skin Is not the only problem with macro evolution. It's also phonetical bone structures and hair texture. All which differs from the afroid race and the caucasoid race. The afroid race Itself despite being one race, are genetically and phonetically diverse from west and central to the east part of the continent. With north and south being more mixed due to Immigration and Invasions. But If the world started with one race and one man and that person was black, then he would have dark brown/pitch black skin, broad nose, oversized lips and nappy hair. Because these combinations of traits are only unique to afroid people. These are also combinations of traits that are most common In central and west africa. All though most East Africans dosen't look like that, dosen't necessarily mean they are mixed. At least not because of Immigration and Invasions, but possibly from the eurasians (Cro Magnons) who Inhabited that region already In 12000 BC. They have also found Neanderthals bones and tools In North Africa older than the ones In Europe. But none In Central and West Africa or even South (possibly due to the heat). Which could explain why west and central afroids look different than the rest of the afroid race.

Race Theory is pseudoscience, invented to promote Eugenics. Macro evolution is also fallacious & filled with verifiable errors.

Ur is not where abraham was placed. It's actually a place called ur-čhasdim in Assyria Babylon area with the Chaldeans. Way long far from Sumer and Ur. This rumor and claim or proposition that's been put out there started from Samuel Noah Kramer who made a mistake thinking the or that he found with the orb Abraham because we had a Biblical preconceived bias like a lot of people do today still cuz they're coming out of it the truth the matter is that he never actually found it he just thought it and it was put out there and accepted because everyone else already presumed it was they didn't realize that there was another a different or out there is outside of their own like the one he found which in fact it was the owner of or Abraham has forums only not this or that you're talking about it's actually from the Ur of Assyria called ur čhasdim the chaldeans next to Babylon aka Babel as the jews called it later on.
@ashur35044 жыл бұрын
Dude at the time of Ebrahim Chaldeans didn't even exist besides they are not a nation they never were they were a tribe a group of people who did magic and were called kasdim or khashdim Chaldean is Latin Vatican gave them this name around 1400 1552 something like that and it gives the same meaning but in Latin

Haha BCE and yet the date still is dated in line with the birth of the Messiah. Besides, BCE just means Before Christs Era and CE means Christs Era... lol You atheists always try to remove Christ from western Civilization start... You can call it the common era a ye want. It was Christ that made our civilization possible.

@@evrenjw what was the catalyst that changed bce to ce? Why did it change? What made it change? And why is it still dated from the birth of Christ? The west isn't the only area that has a specific dating system. The Chinese have one. The Arabs have one. Even the Jews have a dating system that is different. The Arabs aren't in 2022. Neither are the Chinese or the Jews. What in common do we have with the ancient Romans before the year 300 ad?
