Thank you for the comment. I truly truly truly appreciate it! My biggest gripe about this collection is actually that I think Urban Decay should have sent this to friends and fams and fans and whatnot instead of the usual beauty folk. (You know how many reviews I've seen of people saying, "I think he was before my time because I don't know his music but I got this for free..." UGH! Lol! Just ugh.

Yes, fams and make up artists who ‘get it’ and can add extra commentary about the song titles and appreciate the packaging... would seem to sell it more than the folks who stumble across the names. I'm glad you said it. This is the ONLY video I have come across who knew about Prince's music and didn't just do the basic influencer run-through the colors. Imagine one of these influencer claimed she is a big Prince fan but didn't know Computer Blue or Gett Off were actual songs. She questioned where UD got the names from! 😳

So many great Prince songs swirling in my head. When You Were Mine, Poplife and a special place in my heart for The Most Beautiful Girl in the World. I feel so blessed to have seen Prince in Concert and with someone I was so into at the time and we both loved Prince. I remember meeting my man’s sister and explaining why I was wearing Diamonds and Pearls and Purple nail polish etc. I remember him saying “she doesn’t wear clothes, she wears a look” and being so happy he noticed. Happy memories.

My one gripe about the way Urban Decay handled this was that I think they should have sent PR kits to more than just their regular beauty bloggers who don't know his music at all. SO many people only know him after he passed and they only know a small chunk of stuff from the 80s. It would have been nice if UD sent kits to people like Prince's Friend on KZbin (other fams who would have appreciated it for what it is!)

I fell into the "arguing with make-up enthusiasts about this collection" rabbit hole. For some reason non-fan people think that it doesn't represent Prince. My question is why would a makeup collection represent him? Unless of course it consisted of only; eyeliner,mascara and full coverage foundation. I tried to explain this is much more representative of what he evolved into. You can tell that people that knew him had a hand in it and not just someone that only knows him from Purple Rain. He was no longer the lace ass-less jumpsuit person. It looks more refined, less over-the-top, yet still kinda retro...very much representative of him in my opinion. I haven't bought anything yet...I'm still pondering what to get...Thanks for sharing. What a great gift!

I filmed this video with a specific audience in mind because - no joke here - if you take a look at the usual Prince fan sites, channels and accounts, the comments couldn't be more different than the ones in the beauty community. Maybe these fans (or "friends" as many of us refer to ourselves because it's what his preference was) just have more context because they're more than just casual listeners. Maybe they're more mature because they're PROBABLY older. LOL! Maybe tbe beauty community is just a toxic shithole. Maybe all of the above. Who knows. Whatever it is, I knew from the get-go that I needed to shake off any ties with the beauty community in this review. It's nice to see lots of comments from "friends" AND people who aren't part of the toxic portion of the beauty community. BTW I need a new word for that. Something so ugly shouldn't be called the beauty community.

@@ThickWings LOL! They only know Purple Rain. Almost every review I watched on KZbin was from beauty bloggers saying things like, "He's ICONIC! I mean, I don't know any of his music because I think he was before my time but he was like... an ICON! I mean, I TRIED to find his music but I think that it's not available online anywhere because I couldn't find it but he was like... ICONIC!" 😆🤣 If it was makeup like his it would be every full coverage product from MAC and some matte neutral shadow. LOL! I used to wear my makeup like his all through high-school. LoL My favorite look was the 1986 era - Under the Cherry Moon, the Parade album, etc.

Im a Prince fan as well. I remember when Purple Rain came out. We dressed exactly like the characters in that movie. Oh man I want to go back in time. I never was one to dream on the past but nowadays that’s all I do. Everything changed and not for the better IMO. This collection looks really nice. I’m glad you were gifted it. I remember when Purple Rain came out, my neighbor saw it but I didn't get to because I was a kid and it had a whatever rating it has. I was so confused why HE got to see it but I couldn't because we were the same age. I was convinced that he walked into the theater on stilts wearing a trench coat like he was in a cartoon or something LOL!

I have seen so many people say it basically should have been a bright rainbow palette and covered in rhinestones. That sounds like an Elton John palette IMO. Even though prince was very out of the box for the time and refused to conform to society standards he was not loud in a way where it was tacky. I think these captured who he was perfectly.

My introduction to Prince happened a long time ago with "I Wanna Be Your Lover".....its such an amazing song, from an absolutely amazing artist. Prince's untimely death brought the subject of untreated/under-treated chronic pain to the forefront. If his intractable pain would have been taken seriously, he might still be alive today. I still can't listen to his music without crying.

This has to be the best video regarding the UD x Prince collection out here. I love and appreciate your commentary on the songs as well as the colors. I also appreciate your encouraging tone, as someone who have basic application skills I got the "Let's Go Crazy" pallet for that reason. But I also want to get the 0ther kit because I like the neutral solar pallet as well.

This was the review that I was waiting for. I am a Prince fan but not to the extent that you are. When I first saw what they were coming out I was pretty happy that it looked like it was being made for fans of Prince and not for makeup people. I know that a lot of people were complaining that the finishes were not interesting, etc. I thought that they did a good job because let’s be honest. A lot of Prince fans are our age and probably older. My Mom was huge into Prince in the 80’s. The finishes are perfect for people in that age range. I have real problems wearing those really emollient, foiled metallics. They look scaley on my 46 year old eyelid skin! I was also super happy to see that they didn’t just come out with a Purple Rain themed palette and call it a day. I thought that it was also an interesting collaboration since no one has collaborated with Prince’s intellectual property before in the beauty space (as far as I know). Then again I also liked the Basquiat collab that they did as well.

I haven't seen anyone collaborate with the estate in the beauty industry yet either. When he was around he did have two fragrances of his own, plus a line of home scents for awhile... there might have been some incense too?? Hard to remember! The beauty community is doing their usual, predictable thing - its hard to not be frustrated but I try my hardest to just not pay attention! Like you, I'm glad that it wasn't made for ONLY the makeup community. (Still, there are plenty of reviews from beauty bloggers right now saying things like, "I think he was before my time..." or "I looked but his music must be really hard to find." Girl. Girl. Girl... GIRL!

I am 41 and a huge lover of all things prince. One of the only men in heels I have been drawn and attracted to for basically my entire life. His aura, presence, the way he spoke, his music of course is what drew me in. He was a genius and master of his craft and i cried when we lost him.

@@faeriesmak You can still find one of the personal fragrances pretty easily actually! It's called 3121. It was a shit show of a release and had lots of issues on the legal end. I never got his first perfume but sometimes you can find an empty bottle on Ebay. It was called Get Wild and had a fuzzy cap! He did a ton of different marketing over the years. There was always a catalog, an 800 number or a website. Beyond just the albums, posters, plenty of apparel options and jewelry... there were comic books, incense and a Myst inspired computer game. Then there were the album releases: his 2010 album was only available for free in one French newspaper if I recall correctly. He also had his own music store where you could buy albums from him - unfortunately when he decided that the internet was over that also meant that everything you paid for stopped playing (I still have the files, they still don't play). The beauty communities reaction to this is mostly just ignorance. They don't know enough to know - he ALWAYS did stuff that was out of the norm for him. At this point I think most of the fam expect the unexpected.

OMG that sounds scary! Glad you made it out safe! I've seen him twice as well. One big stadium show and one smaller theater show, which was obviously more fun. The stadium show was the Jam of the Year tour. Chaka Khan opened for him and when she came out we were all like, "Ooh! Chaka Khan!" Then about 2 hours into her set we were like, "UGH Chaka Khan!" LOL! It was more like a double headlining act than Prince with an opening act. It was a LONG show. He played until the wee hours of the morning and afterwards there was another show at a small club but at that point I had enough and didn't care anymore LOL!!! I just wanted to go to bed! 🤣😭

Thanks for the review! Finally a real fan. I grew up with the brother. I thought UD and his estate did a great job with the packaging. The timing of the release coincided with Pat McGrath’s new blush release. Money is tight. I brought the purple palette. the brush and the lack eyeliner. I bought the purple palette and got it in 2 days and am so in love with it and the quality of the shadows. I have been saying the people who thought his friend and his muse did him dirty truly did not get who he was, his essence, his aura. So many have said it should have been basically another rainbow palette covered in rhinestones. Prince was a lot of things but tacky he was not. It is prince, not Elton John. I feel like the purple palette represent more of his earlier years and the black palette more of his later years. And not understanding the shade names. Not going down that road. I will be getting the black palette at ulta too.btw, did you notice the shift in the shimmers in the purple palette in the sunlight? I even noticed when doves cry has a slight blue and purple shift

Not Elton John! 🤣🤣🤣 I've been wondering the same thing though - WHY on EARTH are people expecting bright rainbow colors for a Prince collection?! That makes ZERO sense to me. Also totally on the purple colors! That's why I thought - for people who aren't as confident with makeup - it would make a great palette! Because one color gives you all those shifts and pretty effects! Super easy to use!

Just a heads up - I got an email earlier that the official store (store.prince.com) was selling a limited amount of these. I don't see them on the site but it could be worth calling or emailing them to see. I've always had really good luck with their customer service (when my Sign O The Times box set got scratched they had the manufacturer make me another outer box at no charge - the set was sold out so they couldn't get me a replacement and the inside components were fine - pretty nice of them really). Wow., this just came out! I'm so glad you shared your feedback on this! I saw the palettes and really want them. While a part of me thinks the Estate is just milking any kind of agreement they can get and I don't like that aspect of it (it's very anti-Prince, actually as he never made brand deals like this), the makeup fan in me and my love of Prince still pulls me towards this...lol I like most of the shades and think they'd be great together. Might just have to place an order.

There's a lot to this - it's what I didn't talk about in the video. He did actually have two fragrances so he dabbled in the industry from time to time. He also often did stuff that left people going, "Excuse me, but what?" So I'm pretty used to just rolling with it (if there was one thing he did all the time, it was the unexpected LOL). The problem that I have with speculating that stuff is that no one knows what someone would or wouldn't like, personally speaking, I just don't have the stomach for it. As far as the estate goes, it's a business. Why wouldn't a business try to make money? Since he left no will everything is still being contested and the estate was told by the court to monetize. They have taxes and bills to pay and need to make money. I suppose the alternative would be to shut everything down and let things unfold in time. Which I'm not at all opposed to myself, but since they want to keep "the business" running... they're going to look for opportunities to make money. I hear what you're saying though, I just think it's probably a big, complex machine that several people are trying to figure out. There are people who are employed at Paisley Park to consider, all kinds of factors that come into play with this - made more complicated by the fact that he left no instructions. The only thing I ever heard him say was that someone would release all that music in his vault one day, but it wouldn't be him. (I think that was on The View, right?)

It’s great that they are keeping his name going with this release and I get that they have to make money. The Estate hasn’t been managed too well and they still have to hand it over to the siblings. After your video, I saw the one from Prince’s Friend who spoke about the collection before it was released and he makes a lot of good points. We really don’t know what he would have approved or have done. Then even though I recalled you saying the collection is not as much for the makeup reviewers I couldn’t help it and watched some of those videos and it was ....entertaining, at least! 😅

I'm late to the party on this video but man I love Prince but I do not need more makeup!! I honestly didn't even notice that they didn't use hits like Purple Rain until you pointed it out because all of my faves were on there. I was like "Check, check, check." My favorite song to dance to when I was little was Get Off (horrifying? maybe, I just loved the beat), that's the first one I looked for. I think people getting upset over this do not understand Prince because I have little doubt that he would look at this and say "Cool, man" and then go about his day.

Yes. That was a thing I forgot to mention. I decided not to script this video because I wanted to just wing it and enjoy the moment. I wanted my authentic thoughts and feelings to come out spontaneously! It made for a fun video but I also got so excited that I forgot to talk about some stuff! 🤣

As a prince fan and a makeup artist I was so excited for this, but unfortunately ended up not being impressed and was let down. They could’ve done so much better for him.

@@DustinHunter so even when they initially showed the launch before the release I was so bummed there was no lipsticks with like a hot red named little red corvette, or a super cool purple shade named purple rain or a pink named kiss. I also think raspberry beret would’ve been a cool lip shade but was happy to see it as an eyeshadow color at least. Instead of the repackaged all-nighter powder I would’ve loved a highlighter named I would die 4 u or diamonds and pearls! I also would’ve skipped the black liner and did a deep purple. I could go on for days! I think I could create my own prince themed collection complete with names! What I did like though was the eyeshadow packaging and the names of the shadows. I think prince would’ve totally given major side eye to this collection

Half of what you're original comment is referencing is what I decided not to talk about in this video because this video is aimed at the Prince community more than the beauty community. The beauty community is making a lot of the "cash grab" comments, whereas the folks in Prince's camp have more context. I didn't want to spend a huge amount of time debating anything with the beauty community. The other half - about UD repackaging products - I can't honestly speak to very much because, as I said in the video, I don't really have much from them. The Born to Run palette was good. That's the only one I had aside from a couple Naked palettes from WAY back that I don't have anymore. You can actually see my updated makeup collection in a recent video if you're curious! I cleared out a TON of stuff this past year. Gave a lot to friends and tossed expired stuff.
