I have a question, because I'm a bit confused on the topic of kizomba fusion which, at least here in Italy, seems mostly a fusion of kizomba traditional (turns with shuffle steps, basic steps made in a more traditional way than urbankiz) and urbankiz (blocks, touch steps ...). Which is in your opinion the best styling for kizomba fusion regarding weight shifts, grounding to the floor etc.? Maybe in this case do we have to find a middle ground between these two different ways of styling?

Unfortunately your question and the answer have a lot of it depends. It depends . Mainly will depend on the type of music you’re dancing to. Is the song more flowy and groovy closer to Kizomba mayb even rnb /afro beat then your styling more likely be in your body movement Ginga more grounding and weight shift and also will depend on the style of which leader is using and what he is fusing Kizomba with. Most people fuse Kizomba with urban kiz but now there is also a lot of fusion of salsa/bachata/brazilian zouk in urban kiz the styling may then lend it self to more arm movement , body rolls and footwork although styling of footwork can also be used in Kizomba but will have a different look and feel than that of urban kiz

Also to remember what ever styling you are using it is styling and should not interrupt your ability to follow or disturb the lead . Styling is addition to the dance so you can express also and show your interpretation to the music but your fundamentals need to be solid before adding styling Grounding and weight shift in Kizomba dance is fundamentals you need to know well before you can play around with it in a way that it does not affect negatively the lead or follow technique

Thanks for your explanation. I think it'll help me as I soon will join a beginner class. Both the music and the body motion in traditional bachata is different from modern and sensual bachata. Although you can "crossdance" it doesn't feel right. Is there such a difference in kizomba and urban kiz music? Or is just a matter of personal preferences?

Yes there is often major difference in Kizomba music and the music they dance on in urban kiz . And you will look out of place and can sometimes even offend others by dancing Kizomba on urban kiz music and vice versa. There are some music you can dance both Kizomba and urban kiz this is usually ghetto zouk and some Afro beat songs . As you go on your journey I’m sure you’ll will discover this more . Thank you for your comment as it has given me a thought to perhaps make a video on this .

Great explanation on the dance style difference. This is a subject often discussed though the source of the original and the evolved variations are not explained enough. What is the influence of the professional dance community? Was the original dance developed by trained professional dancers? Have trained professional dancers played a key role in developing and popularizing change from grounded inward circular dance to a more European upright posture linear dance with arm styling and staccato movements? The key developers of the styles, what the source of their influence? Why did they make the changes to the original dance they learned?

Thank you for your comment. As you mention the orginal dance so to speak of kizomba/ semba was not created by trained dancers but members of the community just dancing . From what I have observed and seen so far it seems that the fusion of kizomba with other dance styles such as hip hop tango bachata has been from professional dancers of those styles prodominately from the western world and has yes influenced and impacted greatly on the dance to create what we now know as urban kiz. It is a topic of great and interesting debate

Seems like a similar debate between bachata and sensual bachata. "Sensual bachata" takes the basic step of "traditional" bachata and has just come to be fused or influenced by primarily Brazilian zouk at this point and other contemporary dance. Would you say urbankiz takes influence from tango? One of my friends is a long term tango dancer and when I see urbankiz dancers I feel like I see a lot of tango movements, or don't know if that's kizomba fusion. It's confusing sometimes 😅

I did not know that it also happened with bachata but it does not surprise me as I think it is a natural way that new dance styles emerge, taking influence from those before it. Yes some urban kiz is influenced from tango depends on who is dancing some dancers take their influence from kizomba with more hip hop for their urban kiz some more with tango one big example is Fred and Morgane you can see the tango influence alot in their dance style
