Many times the taxes on them are so high that it`s cheaper to abandon them and let the government take them. They offer them at county auctions and if no one wants them or the back taxes are too high, they`re left to rot. I`ve seen where old couples can`t afford the taxes because of no or limited income and end up losing their homes. It`s a shame our greedy government can`t offer tax breaks for old and/or historic properties. Maybe more people would be interested in putting money into them.

That main hallway in the second house was called a "dog trot" and it was used to keep the house cool in the summer when they would open the windows and use the screen doors. It enabled a draft to permeate the house that helped to keep it cooler since they didn't have air conditioning.

I've been interested in old abandoned houses since I was a kid. I remember going into an old, decaying abandoned house that was built in 1810. It was a big stone house and it sat right in the Roadman University Park in California, PA. It had, near the top of the house, near the eaves, 1810 chiseled into it. There were pieces of the house laying all around it on the outside. Trash strewn about too by litterers. It was a little grown up with brush and jaggers around the outside too. But I went into the front door a little, but I looked all around and the upstairs looked dangerous cause it had holes in the floors and the brush was growing inside the house too somewhat.(so I didn't step any further than the front door). I remember seeing the blue plaster walls and remnants of the interior, such as the doorways etc. I just immersed myself in imagination thinking about what life was like for the families living there over the years. That was in about 1989 or 90. I was 8 or 9 and I still remember that old, big abandoned stone house. Went to the park a few years after and I noticed the house was leaning, and crooked. They had it all roped off. Next thing you know, it was gone when I went back a little later. Lol, sorry for the long comment but I still remember that house. I got hooked on abandoned houses at that particular point I believe. But I'm way too chicken to go near these places cause I'm too shy to ask permission to look around. Love the channel, keep safe!

Both of these homes need saving . While the second one is certainly father gone then the first the bones of the home from what I saw where still good . These places must of been grand in their time while they where maintained and you will never see homes like this today primarily due to the cost of building them . I hope if someone recognizes these homes they look into either purchasing them or trying to get them declared heritage buildings and to have them restored . Always makes me so sad when I see once loved homes left for nature to reclaim them because people don’t care about history only about money . Thank you for sharing .
