Build a structure to cover your tanks and use the surface area to collect water passively. Or, use the hillside above the tanks to gather rain water to dump into the tanks. You'll be thankful for the redundancy if you lose power for a prolonged period of time. Don't forget to winterize. Awesome work!
@RA-rf4nz3 жыл бұрын
You should decentralize the tanks too. Connecting all together may drain them all if just one tank springs a leak. And just adding a valve to each tank will allow you to decouple them and then join them back when and as needed.
@ethericbliss233 жыл бұрын
Absolutely!! One way check valves between the tanks is a great idea (as well as couplings between, just for ease of access to repair/modify/etc.) Also, isolation (ball) valves per tank as well, for same reasons.
@cherylcook19422 жыл бұрын
I have a similar set up. Exceptions, the tanks are filled with a gravity fed spring. The tanks are kept full year round. The lines are buried 12". We get virtually no snow, zone 8. Fire is a worry, I have looked into the metal water tanks. Very expensive, requires permits and a cement foundation. I have recently installed another tank, away from these for rainwater harvesting and easier access in an emergency. We fill the tanks through the top, in a chain,so that when one fills, it overflows through a hose into another. We have 8 tanks linked.
@brainwashingdetergent43223 жыл бұрын
I work in oil and gas and those tanks you have there are a bit smaller that the 1550 gal used on a many of well site, they are used to supply the employees with potable water. They are usually stored within “sea cans” or “connex” or “shipping containers” what ever you guys call them up there, and the sea cans are spray foamed on the inside and heated with a milk house heater. That is more than sufficient for north western North Dakota to keep from freezing.

With fire being an inevitability, I am curious why you went with poly tanks. Why not go with metal and/or concrete? Weren’t you planning to build ponds on your property? I would go to ponds first for firefighting as opposed to a well. YMMV

Hey there Curtis! You may have already thought about this, but do you plan on putting a pump at the tanks for fire suppression? Gravity pressure off of the auxiliary outlets won't be enough to keep a flexible fire hose open or push a significant stream of water. When I fought wildland fires, we used a pump that pushed 125 psi on 1/2" to 1" flexible cotton jacket hand lines. Other than that, we're super stoked about your redundant water supply! Great job putting that together :) We look forward to watching the more detailed version of this in From The Field! - Brian + Erin

We still have a way to go on completing our system since we’ve only been here a year and a half and have been clearing firebreaks around buildings since we arrived as the first order of business in case of fire. I’d like to see how you are going to winterize your system and have you done firebreaks around that hill to prevent a fast moving fire that you can’t stop from taking that system out? We are ex helitack firefighters. Thank goodness the monsoons came because it was powder keg dry here for over a year. Now we’re mowing like crazy to keep THAT future fire hazard in check!😆

I guess my question would be. How much water in the tanks via gravity is equal to 60psi? I would assume that 4500 liters of water trying to squeeze through an 1.5" pipe is equal to some amount of pressure. Have you filled these up fully yet? How empty do they become, before the refill from the pressure tank begins? I've considered doing something similar, but I had always planned on running 2 sets of pipes, one for filling and one for draining.
@lukeb99103 жыл бұрын
Regardless of the amonut of water in the tanks you get 0.433 psi per foot of elevation so if he has an elevation change of 85' he will have about 36 psi consistently.
