Workin through gettin an old 80 GS1000L back to road readiness and really enjoy you sharing your experiences with your GS, so thanks a ton! In the spirit of sharing I have a slightly different method for gasket sealing. I take the gasket itself and apply silicone to both sides of it, then using my fingers to sandwich the gasket, smear the silicone onto the gasket to as thin a film as possible on both sides, and in this case, another thin film to the engine block surface. Then press the gasket onto the block sealing surface, slip a few bolts into the mounting holes to align the gasket, then press it onto the sealing surface all the way around with my fingers, wipe off any excess silicone, then let the silicone set up and dry, essentially bonding and sealing the gasket to the block. When ready to install the oil pan I'll apply a last thin film of silicone to the metal sealing surface, ensuring again to wipe away any excess silicone and mount the pan. This technique can save a lot of frustration when finish mounting the oil pan since the gasket is already being held in its proper location for you and can't slip and slide around. One last practice to add is that all the all the bolt mounting holes should be "chased" with a tap, then cleaned with brake/carb cleaner and if possible blown clear with compressed air to insure the threaded holes are straight and cleared of any crud or loctite from a previous installation. If one doesn't have the proper tap bit you can cheat by taking a fresh clean bolt, run a nut up the bolts shank a ways, then grind off the 1st 2 threads of the bolt and cut 2 slits up the sides of the tip of the bolt across from each other then remove the nut to act as a thread chaser after the grinding/cutting operations. Then run the bolt all the way in till it lightly bottoms out in the hole. The 2 slits in the bolts shank will act as areas for the crud to accumulate into, like the depressed areas of a tap ;>)

Very helpful video, it's great to see knowledge getting shared like this! I'm bringing an '82 GS450T back from the dead and just repaired some butchered oil plug threads. I keep seeing conflicting info about using Loctite (blue) on the oil pan bolts when reattaching to the case. What are your thoughts? Thanks!

Thank you for watching! I can understand the logic behind someone wanting to put blue loctite on oil pan bolts. After all, they do point down toward the pull of gravity and vibration is always a factor. However theory and reality don't always align. In a case like this I can only speak from my experiences. I have not personally used loctite on any oil pan bolts that I've torqued in my lifetime and I have never had one fall out on my watch. Using the proper torque as outlined in the SM is important of course. Hope my opinion helps. It is only one man's.

Moggy1000 I haven't been into mine yet. Though I've done others in the past, I'm not sure of specifics with this model. Perhaps you can find the help you need at thegsresources.com. It's a wellspring of good information.
