Very informative video with voiceover description on your thought process. For those of us who don't get to lane filter/split it always looks dangerous, perhaps moreso on camera than it feels live. Here in Minneapolis people change lanes without signaling, impatient, won't let you merge on ahead of them, etc. I could never place my trust in their decision making. Thanks for watching. I used to live in Edina for many years and agree that auto drivers there aren't as in tune to motorcycles as CA drivers. After all, they spend half the year without any bikes on the road. That said, MPLS/STP have the kind of congestion that could be improved in warmer months with allowing motorcycles to split.

Lane splitting can be tricky so even though legislations differ from country to country, the techniques used is still helpful. Nice video!

I might add -your freeway footage shows what I call the " teeth of a zipper " where cars are not directly side by side. Making it easier, and less risky to " slither " between the slower lanes while varying your throttle. The riders who just thread the needle in a straight line at steady speeds may shorten there lives more than your breakfast Lol.

Rode up the A1 in the UK today. Filtered through 2 miles of traffic. Trucks are scary. Just have to try to predict if cars will try to cross lanes.

Thanks for watching! "Predict" is a good word for the "risk assessing" I mentioned in the video. There's certainly an art to it. Sometimes I wonder if playing hockey as a kid helped me build skills for lane-splitting and filtering. A hockey game is a similar kind of chaotic-but-structured dance.

Hi UM. In Germany, motorcycles often pull up at traffic lights. It's forbidden, but it's done, including by me. That would be far too dangerous on the autobahn, because here the cars often change lanes and get you off your bike. We also have a ban on overtaking on the right on the Autobahn, so drivers do not look in the right-hand rear-view mirror. Greetings Matthew

Thanks Matthias! It is fun for me to learn about the differences between our riding/driving cultures. Given the rules of the road there, it makes sense to me that lane splitting is not allowed in the same way. Do you have auto drivers who use their mobile phones while driving? I assume it is illegal to do so, as it is here, but many do it here nonetheless. I believe filtering to the front at stops helps protect riders from being rear-ended by auto drivers on their phones.

Hi UM, thanks for your reply. Using a mobile phone while driving costs €130 in Germany and one point in the criminal record. So a hefty punishment. Overtaking on the right also costs €100 and one point. Exception is only allowed if a traffic jam has formed. Unfortunately, there is hardly anything that is allowed in Germany. Everything is regulated, including the barbecue at home 😉
