Amazing story 😢 I resonate with "every Marine is a rifleman". I enlisted as a 3381(cook) and during my 2 OEF tours with 3rd CEB, I was attached to sappers in Marjah and became an IED dog handler. 3rd CEB in 29 Palms did not have our field mess gear for cooks so, they assigned us to roles as combat engineers. Being an IDD dog handler brought me as close to action as I never thought possible. Amazing story and hope all is well with you brother.

Darnell Golden, I am very taken emotionally by your candid, humble, and very keen understanding of who you are. I am glad you made it home from the war. You did your part, witnessed much, and are here today. Take good care of yourself. You have a child in the picture; take especial care of him. Be the best dad you can be. Your social evolution growing up in Baltimore, on some levels reminds me of growing up in Chicago; learning how to navigate different people, personalities, and influences. About your enlistment in the Marines, we all have had our good & not so good experiences as Marines. I went in active duty as an infantry rifleman, under the popular open contract program by my persuasive recruiters. I was in before all of chaos of the Persian Gulf War. I actually discharged in 1989. Deployed three times on Westpacs..I was in a different Marine Corps in some ways. You mentioned reporting to your reserve unit and meeting certain assholes. I think most of us have met our shared. It is part of the culture. Luckily, I didn't meet a lot during my 4 years. After active duty, I enlisted in the Army reserves and did two years and got out. It was a good experience for me. Use your benefits if you haven't and knock out your degree. You owe this to yourself. About what advice you would give your 19 years old self, keep it moving, grow in patience and deeper understanding of yourself and others. Grow in wisdom. Very best to you brother, Semper Fi

My younger brother served 4 years in the airforce and I almost joined the coast guard. If I did I probably wouldn't have the husband and children I have now. But there are times, esp hearing these stories that I kinda regret not joining something and serving. I wish my brother had a better experience.... but he wasn't in a good mindset when he went in at 19 to begin with. I pray he gets back in someday and NOT because of a war😢😢

Unfortunately the military can be prone to fostering toxic leadership in some instances. And there’s no real solution for it due to the nature of the job.

The first time we hear not just the twin towers got hit, but the Pentagon got hit. We remember the towers over and over, yet remember the Pentagon & those at work also. Plus the flight that crashed. After what we are told to believe was when the hijackers were overrun by the passengers.

Ah yes. Whitey tighteys with our recruit number written on the front, if you were lucky enough to get your own pair back from Mt Surabachi. I was #12.. it was shit having my boy from my small home town right across the d.i. highway, and this dude was soft spoken and laughed at everything too. And would have me cracking up. One of us would bd crying trying not to laugh looking at the other. I still remember to this day, us getting smoked because we laughed so hard at another kid in his BCGs, who the DI had facing the mirror on the QD, and was pointing at the mirror, screaming. "I'm not stupid, you are!!!" Looked like something out of a psych ward. Only at PI😂 On another note, i too had an outstanding recruiter who came, and a great substation. He was then, SSgt. Jarosz. And later pulled strings and got me back in, after a 12 month hiatus, when i foolishly got our after stop loss was lifted in 2003. He was then either MSgt or MGySgt Jarosz. That guy was good to me. Came to my football games, checked on me regularly, like a big brother. Got me back for RA over xmas when i was a PFC at mos school at the stumps. They were a good bunch of guys at that little substation. Wonder what they are up to these days.
