Ureteropelvic Junction (UPJ) Obstruction is a condition where there is a blockage or narrowing at the junction where the ureter (the tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder) meets the renal pelvis (the funnel-like part of the kidney that collects urine). This obstruction impedes the normal flow of urine, leading to a buildup of urine in the kidney, known as hydronephrosis.
UPJ obstruction can be congenital, meaning it is present from birth, often due to abnormal development of the kidney or ureter. It can also occur later in life due to scar tissue, kidney stones, or other external compressions. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, urinary tract infections, hematuria (blood in the urine), or flank pain. In severe cases, it can lead to impaired kidney function or kidney damage.
Diagnosis is typically made through imaging studies like ultrasound, CT scan, or a nuclear medicine scan, which show the degree of obstruction and kidney function. Treatment options vary depending on the severity of the obstruction and may range from observation to surgical intervention, such as pyeloplasty, which involves surgically removing the blockage and reconstructing the junction.
