Welding Polypropylene Bumper Support Brackets

Many bumpers have welded-in bumper reinforcements like this Mazda Miata rear. The reinforcement is held in place by tabs in the bumper that pass through slots in the reinforcement and then are melted over like a mushroom.
In this example, the reinforcement is made of the same material as the bumper itself (polypropylene). Look for the ID symbols molded into the parts to find out what kinds of plastic you are working with. If the reinforcement is a different material than the bumper, you cannot use this repair procedure.

Can one get material for make tabs and reinforcements or does it need to be scavenged from a bumper?

3:45 ~ I am a bit concerned at the comment that is made here. Are you trying to sell a more expensive welder? Will a 5700HT not work just as well on this repair?

The 5700HT would not work here because of the size of the gap we were welding. We needed to be able to aim the heat into the gap to heat the base material as well as the welding rod (this is to create a fusion weld). The airless welder would not be able to get into that space to heat the base material and the welding rod at the same time.
