Great information! I always leave my jack under my car when I need to go under it just in case a stand fails, that way it falls onto the jack instead of on me. You can never be too careful when working under a large chunk of metal that weighs thousands of pounds and could easily crush you.

I'm a religious stand user , I've heard too many stories and been a tech for too long ,I don't wanna die. The other night I needed to get under the car so I jacked it up and had the balls to contemplate climbing under because "this will only take a second and im in a hurry",and the stands were at the other end of the shop. Stood there for about a minute feeling stupid and thinking how stupid that would be. If I'm stuck without a stand , I'll get some lumber or mounted car tires or rocks or SOMETHING that if the car falls down I have at least my torso thickness and then some.

The 6000# rating is for a pair of those stands, not one. They are to be used AS A PAIR to support one end of a vehicle. The directions say to BEND the stop tabs, not hit them with a hammer (peen them). They can be bent by inserting a flat blade screwdriver at the bottom of the U and prying the screwdriver handle upward. If done this way the paint film will stretch without breaking. The safety feature of the stop tab is not hidden from anyone who can read. It's on the jack and in the Important Safety Information of the Owner's Manual in the Assembly section. The directions say to INSPECT THE JACKS EACH TIME BEFORE USE. There were two jack stand recalls for HF jack stands that were defectively manufactured by Jiaxing Golden Roc Tools Company due to worn tooling. The improved posts were the result of HF going to a different supplier. The posts of ratcheting jack stands are cast iron, not "pot metal". Cast iron in compression is slightly elastic, ductile and strong, not brittle, which is why all blacksmiths anvils are made of it. The basic design of the pawl/post system is such that the impact of the pawl is on order of 20-30 lbs or less when roughly lifted, it does not come close to the force applied by a ton of truck with a man bouncing on the bed.

Not sure what the pinned ones are rated for (old enough to not have stickers on them) but I know what the quick release ones are rated for. I also leave the jack just under the frame, just in case, as well as set the tires under the frame rails. The quick release set has been pinned for about as long as I had them. Realized what you were going to say as soon as both anvils were unpinned.

Great follow up from the previous video about these stands. I didn't mention about that tab in my comment on the last video. I see that your stands have a warning sticker about bending that tab in. IF people would read the directions/safety instructions that come with there tools, a lot of injuries could be avoided! I have bumped my stands quite a few times while under the car breaking bolts loose, torqueing bolts & sliding out from under the car on a creeper. I'm always a where of where I'm at & where my stands are placed but sometimes they just can't be avoided.

He was lucky that he had his wheels under the car when it buckled...although losing a set of near-mint 15x8" Vette's (obviously a few years back) didn't impress him much, he did keep both his arms, so he couldn't complain too much. (But we all know he did, right? For DAYS...gawrsche...) I think the reason yours never failed or slipped was that you used them as a pair. Might make a pressure treated plywood pyramid (truncated at the top, and wide enough at each layer as to almost touch the inner walls/cage of the jack stand) spacer to fit inside the cage/body of the jack stand, so that if the teeth or pawl ever did fail, the anvil would only fall a millimeter or 2 down onto the plywood (stacked) pyramid (glued and screwed together for easy handing). The pyramid would be made to fit snug under the bottom of the anvil-arm, to a set desired height that would be chosen to be used all the time (or could leave the layers of plywood stacked loose to allow different heights). Also, maybe an inlay/flush section of 3mm sheet steel about 4" x 4" to spread the impact of the bottom of the anvil arm might be a good idea too, so that if the teeth or pawl fail, the sudden force of the anvil dropping down wouldnt split the plywood pyramid. Just an idea, don't quote me on any of it

Been using them for at least 6 years never realized that there was once a recall on them and was never once afraid to use him and never once have I pushed that stupid pin in on mine to keep the top from coming out I just know enough not to go that high The reason why I didn't is because they won't fit on my shelf in one piece if I take them apart to store them. I would think common sense would prevent people from going that high with any jack stand. I just checked mine too to see if the paws are wore down when you mentioned the soft metal and mine are still in excellent condition

Well - you sure put that thing to a test! That truck and the jack were both rocking hard. It actually builds more trust than fear provided the jack stand is not flawed. Mine don't have the tab for locking the center post, it's actually a screw and figuring that I know how to use jack stands I never read the small manual that came with it, After about 8 years as I was looking to see if my stands are affected by the recall I found the manual online and that's when I found out about the screw. When I checked the screw was not set on any of my stands - they are now! By the way, what broke off of your jack handle when you were using it to bang on the release lever? Good job on the video!

William I hear you. I’m not the most experienced welder, so the stands I’ll be making will straight vertical tubes that rest directly on a base plate, and machines holes and pins keep the extension locked on. I’ll just be welding the lateral supports on it, as these are much less critical. I do have to admit, my TIG welds about an order of magnitude better than 90% of the mig welds I see on most store bought shop equipment though.

I returned my 3 ton stands to harbor freight and they didnt have any to replace them with so, I ended up walking out with a gift card. I had plans to work on my car that same day and I ended up going to autozone and purchasing a set of 4 ton stands at almost twice the cost of the harbor freight ones. The autozone ones look just as bad or worse than my recalled stands I returned. Interested to see if they have the same issue as the harbor freight ones. Hopefully my car doesn't fall and kill me. Have to get this exhaust finished. I've been leaving my hydraulic jack under the vehicle with light tension on it in case I have a stand fail.

An interesting experiment would be to test the ultimate load. 6 tons is 12,000 lbs with a 150% safety factor they should support up to 18,000 lbs. The tiny engagement areas of the pawl and teeth may not support rated loads. I have a set damn it. I damn myself because I could tell they were garbage when I bought them, and did it anyway.

I have always had a personal rule that I would never buy anything related to safety, or anything that I need to work 100% as designed or intended, from Harbor Freight. My thought process is that, everyone already knows that their stuff is cheaper due to lower quality materials and manufacturing standards, so knowing all of that already, would I really want to buy jack stands from them to support a vehicle that I'm going to crawl under? Even when using decent quality jack stands, like some of the other guys on here, I'll use two jack stands under the same side of the car. Engineers make things redundant all the time, especially if they know that having a failure could be fatal.

I was using cheap Chinese stands like the HF failure version working under my BMW. I was trying to remove the rear big ass bolts that hold the rear shocks to the suspension. I couldn't get enough lever or support in order to get enough strength to remove the bolt with a breaker bar of all versions. Boy was i kicking the crappy jack i had under hding.my car a lot even holding it with my feet for support i. Getting a better angle of tacking that stubborn shock bolt that still wouldn't budge. Actually ductile iron and semi-metal are cast and are used for things like lathe chucks and wheel hubs which must never crack. It depends on the alloy. You will notice that these videos showed the tendency of the anvils to mushroom and deform rather than crack, which would not be the case for brittle cast iron. The replacement anvils actually cracked during destructive testing unlike the recall ones. I suspect that the newer anvils are a lower quality metal to cope with money loss during the recall.
