Yep. Hi-Lo is rare on Police vehicles in America. But in Europe, it is common in countries like Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy and Austria.

It’s true. In the 70s lots of NYPD cars had hi-lo, you can hear it in the original The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. One of my favorite movies. Also, side note, NYC EMS used to run lots of hi-lo too up until the mid/late 90s. Like the other person mentioned, it’s been making a comeback.

Where do they expect cars to go except through red lights or mount sidewalks? when your on emergency lights you still have to treat everything as a give way and shouldn't be forcing drivers to run lights or mount anything, in UK they have satnavs with constant traffic updates and by now it should be common sense what roads are busy at what times.

It's not the sirens, it's just traffic. If it wasn't so much and the roads was built better. The Fire, EMS and police could use minimum sirens and just blip or honk. But also remember some people can't drive, they'll be on the phone or doing something else. That's why rumblers are in NYPD and FDNY vehicles, so when you feel it. It hurts and makes you move.

God Zilla it’s a mode on the NYPD spec smartsirens, and they don’t use it too often. In NYC back in the 90s you used to hear tons of hi-lo from the city ambulances, but those rigs are long gone. Nothing exciting happened when the cops got out, they made the guys move their cars that had been blocking the road for an hour lol

Forgot PD took them out too but Mt Sinai EMS uses Hi-Lo now since they're trying to cut down on noise pollution from the wail and phasers and it's absolutely horrible! haha I love the beginning though - the rumbler horn and that little siren use was phenomenal.
