Only Human

3 жыл бұрын

Flies gather around tea bags, open cat food pouches are scattered everywhere and a stack of dirty paper plates are piled up with one plate covered in maggots...
But this isn’t a rubbish dump - it’s 47-year-old hoarder Sally-Ann’s litter-infested kitchen, which she can no longer use because it's jam-packed with stuff she's been hoarding for the last seven years - and now she's forced to prepare sandwiches in her bed.
The 47-year-old is a self-confessed ‘rubbish hoarder’, and at one point the problem was so bad Sally-Ann’s bedroom was plagued with carpet bugs and her bathroom was unusable - which meant she had to resort to desperate measures.

Because the situation is usually assessed with all deparments involved and if the animals are well enough and not deemed in imminent danger there can be the decision to not remove the animals completely as that could cause further upset and the situation could get dramatically worse. It's also often the case that depending on the age or other situations with the animal and availability of space at shelters, there can be a high chance of it being euthanised. The animals that are allowed to remain can help in encouraging people in their treatment to improve their situation. The decision to leave animals in their care could well come after a lot of group consideration.

It's not just the stuff, it's the feelings behind why you hoard. "The Hiarder Next Door" actually provides therapy before people go jn to help clean. This way the hoarder is psychologically prepared for the clear out. Otherwise, it's just like ripping a bandaid off a wound.

The irony with all hoarders, is that they spend countless amounts of money (and hours of their lives) accumulating material possessions, but they leave this world empty-handed. Death eventually will pay us all a visit, and a six-foot plot (or a hot oven, for the budget-minded) awaits us all. The obsession with getting an abundance of things to fill a house, will not benefit you when your time is up: it all gets sold, thrown in the trash, or donated to Goodwill/thrift stores.

Im sure it was in one of the foundation books "I will show you fear in a handful of dust". I've been working on my hoarding for years (has never been to this level thankfully) but that really resonated with me and I've never forgotten it. And now I often think about what will happen to my stuff when I die, and it does help to get rid of things, but the important things just give me anxiety thinking about it 😅 which is ridiculous cause its just stuff and the memories won't disappear if they go away.

As others have said, there needs to be supervised living facility for people with this disorder and those staff need breathing equipment. Society needs to understand some people can NEVER be allowed to live alone, never own pets and never be responsible for their own wellbeing. As a person who has lived beside people who live in extreme filth this makes the most sense to me. This issue creates problems, the breeze carried the stench over and it invaded my home, ruined my appetite and made me sick to my stomach. There is also a risk of pests travelling from the hoarders house to yours.

Same. Right now I'm taking a break from decluttering. I'm not a hoarder but I just live in a very tiny apartment with only 3 little cupboards + a small wardrobe to hold literally everything I own so I have plastic boxes to hold the rest of my stuff. I just got so fed up with never finding anything, nothing fitting anywhere and just having too much things to fit my home. So I started going one box at a time and now I have 4 empty boxes already. I haven't really cared about my home for ages and just been throwing my clothes on top of the boxes and leaving my craft supplies out etc. because it's easier than to dig through boxes and it's made my home very messy. I have like a bi-monthly burst of energy when I put everything back to its place and then slip up again. Now I'm determined to get rid of stuff completely and make my belongings fit those 3 cupboards.

I once forgot to take out my rubbish bag when I left for my summer cabin for two weeks. I came back and my flat smelled like something died in there. AfterI threw the bag out I was still gagging for and hour later I did a deep clean to the flat and I kept my windows and balcony door open for the whole day and used a whole bottle of air freshner 😅 after that the smell was gone. I don't want to think how bad months and moths or rubbish inside one house smells like.

Yeah, I know that people with severe mental illness should have their freedom but isolating themselves behind junk is not quality freedom is it? Fay reminds me strongly of myself. The letting go of personal hygiene, the extreme shift from very outgoing to isolated, the shame-driven avoidance of having people come in to fix things, the high self-awareness, the weight-gain, the fear of throwing something in the trash by accident... I don't shake and stroke every piece of trash, but when my vacuum cleaner bag is full, I have to go through the contents to make sure nothing important accidentally got in there - which sucks (pun semi-intended).

I really like your humor :D but to address what you struggle with... Nothing of importance is gonna be in your vaccum cleaner. If you don't have idea what valuable things you have, you have too much and if you accidently suck it then it doesn't matter what it was cuz you didn't even know you had it or didn't care enough to remember :D. Have space for really important things and keep track at least by having written down what you have if you feel all of it is important. Then you'll see clearly what you have and you can prioritize what is useless or not in reality not just in your thoughts. After you have idea what you have you can ask yourself: do I have anything valuable that would fit in my vaccum cleaner? If answer is yes then make a place for it and I can assure you that you will never have to look in vaccum cleaner for anything :).

It's terrifying. I was back to my mom's house and all the time I checked by the phone because always okay. When I was back I realized my mom is a hoarder and she couldn't control anymore. when I try to intervene she and my brother tried to punch me on the face and I was kick it out of the house after 26 hours fly. the next day I tried to contact the city hall and some psychologist however the situation it's not good for intervene because it's still not disturbing The neighbors. I flew back to my house in the middle of the pandemic and since that I don't have more contact with my family. Even though that's all years I was watching this series, I would say it's really difficult situation and they try to hurt you in all emotional levels. unfortunately I need to put the stone in my past because I can't see my mom dying in the main off this cluttering.
