Though the greatest minds back then could only dream of the ease, accuracy and precision that all our modern new fangled CNC machines allow us today, which is why we don't still do things the way they did back then. But besides all that, I think you're entirely wrong as there are absolutely craftsmen who are equal or greater in skill as the craftsmen back then simply due to the fact that the knowledge they had back then has only been compounded and improved upon for hundreds of years.
