Why is nobody talking about the fact that this man is doing it all (not counting the drill) WITHOUT POWER TOOLS?? It amazes me... the patience shown here is truly astounding. I know I would likely hang myself after half of the hand sawing and filing he has done, my utmost respect!

@502deth
@502deth 5 жыл бұрын
he used a marker for layout, something i do often. and for small things like this in soft metal its often easier using files and saws instead of power tools. the metal comes off so quickly its easy to have a small mistake with the dremmel ruin a whole project. but yeah, i definitely would have used a band saw instead of that jewelers saw. that was just crazy.

It's really not that hard to work with small pieces of soft metal. People are so impressed with the most basic shit. Be impressed by the engraving, not the fact hes using hand tools.
@FrankPapaya
@FrankPapaya 5 жыл бұрын
I am impressed by the engraving, who wouldn't? My original comment doesn't state anywhere "the engraving did not impress me", but I might be mistaken or people just assume shit. I wrote about the hand tools because in the vast and growing landscape of youtube crafters it's quite rare to see someone sawing even the softest of material without a bandsaw. That's what's peculiar to me.

The engraving really pulls it all together. Add a pawl to the lead mechanism for an easy way to fix. You can just add a pin for the arm and lay the arm on top so that the user can disengage it to crank the lead back if desired.

Beautiful. I think the idea of having a gripper to grab the lead so that you advance the gripper with the handle and cogs is good. You will need to grip the lead so that you can sharpen it. Unless of course you go for the much more interesting project: a device which grips the lead, advances it and sharpens it. I really appreciate what you are doing. With an unnecessarily complex mechanical pencil you are making the world a better place.

what solution did you use to silver-coat the brass?
@ShaneGadsby
@ShaneGadsby 5 жыл бұрын
I'd love to know too!
@Psychx_
@Psychx_ 5 жыл бұрын
Most likely he used Silver(I)Nitrate as it is a commonly used compound. With this type of surface plating, part of the Brass surface gets dissolved and replaced by elemental Silver in a Redox reaction. You can make Silver(I)Nitrate solution yourself by dissolving pure Silver in nitric acid but you have to figure out the stocheometry (and thereby wheights) yourself. Do this outside as the reaction might form toxic gases and Hydrogen. Silver Nitrate solution can spoil (precipitate out) when exposed to sunlight or when it gets too old, so only make it in small batches as needed.

+Philie Spiess it is an oxidizer such as many, if not all, Nitrates but it cannot spontanously detonate through heat or friction. Explosive reactions might occur with strong reducing agents though.
